Transmission shifting

Tranny seems to take too long to shift to 5th gear, usually always have to get to 50mph to shift over on a flat straight way. Is this normal?

5th is overdrive
have you looked in the owner manual?
It gives all the upshift and downshift speed limits
How hard you are on the throttle changes the shift point too

^he's right. I always have to coax mine into 5th as well - I often look down in annoyance to find that I'm in 4th while cruising @ 55-60 on the interstate. It won't shift up untill after 40mph anyways though, so its not a huge deal.

If yours is really acting very strange you could just unhook your battery to reset the ECU and see if that helps.

It's because you're accelerating too fast. Accelerate slowly and it will shift into 5th earlier.

My 07 TL-S shifts into 5th at exactly 46mph everytime during normal acceleration. Not sure if the Type S tranny is different than the base or not though.

I should add that I just bought my 2004 TL at 80k miles and think it’s a great ride. Anyways, thanks for the responses guys. 01tl4tl, I looked at the manual and it says 37+mph to shift from 4th to 5th mine is closer to 47mph at a "grandma like" acceleration. Also I just recently did the 3X flush out on the tranny and the fluid level is fine. BTW, while I was there, I went ahead and replaced my 3rd and 4th gear pressure switches and while the shift points didn’t change I can honestly say that my tranny is now shifting much smoother. @ Copperbottoms, I’ve been coaxing mine up to 5th as well. Anyways it looks like there are a few others in here that are seeing the same thing I am seeing so it might be normal.

Yes that is perfectly normal. Mine has done that since I had the car. I even had my car checked with the HDS and everything was fine.

37 is the minimum speed 5th can be in while coasting, any lower and the car stalls. The car will usually shift into 5th ending up at 1500 RPM's, if you below that the car seems to lug a little bit, esp when I drive it 40 and put in into SS mode to shift to 5th.

did you use HONDA trans fluid?
The trans actually drains a tick over 3 qts at a time- so it may be off on fluid level if you put 3 qts in
If you havent checked it per book- warm stopped etc- then you cant say its fine

Hmm, I don't seem to have any problems. My shifting is effortless and smooth. Might be the speed you are at?? 5th gear for higher speeds...

Now, as others have mentioned - double check your fluid level just to be sure.

But, my 04 TL is the same. If under light/normal acceleration it will shift into 5th near always just under 50 mph.

I wouldn't want it at any less speed - at 50 it's lugging as it is. I would prefer that the trans logic only allowed 5th at 55+. Unless coasting etc..

Double check your level but completely normal IMHO.

there you go- 2 respected members say to check the fluid level--
per the book is the only way top check it for accurate reading
Anywhere BETWEEN the dots is ok- the middle would be best
Fluid reads higher with driving heat
