Transmission mount tips...

I didn't find much on this topic so I thought I'd ask and get some pointers before I tackle this today. I have an 04 auto.

So anyone have any tips on replacing the 3 mounts?

For example,
1) Which mount should I start with (Upper, lower front, lower rear?)
2) Should I take all of them off and jack up the tranny to support?
3) Use a 2x4 on the jack? etc...

If all goes well I might make a DIY for this repair since I cannot find one on here...

Thanks in advancement.

I did the 105k not long ago with a buddy and with it changed the engine/tranny mounts..

We started with the one to the passenger side since to do the timing belt it comes off..

After replacing that one we placed the jack under the tranny with a piece of wood and supported it so it would stay in place when removing the driver side mount.. All this while the car was on jack stands..

After doing those I did the front mount..

I am pending doing the rear mount in the next months..

As for tips.. Passenger side is easy.. Driver side just remove the air filter and let the fuse box loose to get room..

The front you need to remove the radiator fan and reservoir bottle to be able to remove and slide to the side..

Just take your time and good luck..

I do appreciate you taking your time explaining the motor mounts, but I am talking about the TRANSMISSION mounts.

do one at a time.
I dont think it matters the order. just uninstall one and replace it.

dont know if DIY is needed.
for top mount; air intake tube needs to be removed.
remove cover to top mount.
you'll be able to see if top mount cracked/torn

I wouldnt replace it unless the mount is torn.

then bottom tran mount....
take off wheel.
unbolt mount.
replace mount.

Dont know where the third auto tranny mount is....as i have a 6mt

I bought all three of the mounts so I'm just going to do them all.

Throughout this process I should be jacking up the transmission slightly, is that correct? If so should I use a 2x4 or a piece of wood?

Thanks for the help!

I would say Yes, I used a 2 x 4 to keep it level, and change one by one.. Dont pull them all off..

If they are worn out they might have the tranny and engine sit slightly different than when the new mounts are in there so you might need to raise/lower it a bit when changing them..

Well I got the upper mount replaced it was pretty easy to do the rubber was cracked in two places.

I went for a drive to see how it felt still not completely satisfied. I feel the bottom two are going to be a pain because of limited space.

Bottom ones are easy don't worry. Much easier than it looks. Just make sure you have long extensions to reach it

Alright that's good to hear it just looks intimidating because of the limited space.

I have plenty of extensions for the job, I'll try and tackle the bottom ones tomorrow morning.

Its funny because everytime I work on my car I plan on washing it afterwards but it never happens. No more motivation...

Due_Diligence, if you can, report back on the lower trans mount.
I also share the same question as you.

I attempted the lower tranny mounts yesterday afternoon. I was able to get the lower mount closest to the engine. First I jacked up the tranny just to support it, then loosen the bolts and finally had to jack the tranny up more to remove the mount. Took a bit of wiggling to get it out.

I was surprised at how much give the other mounts had. As far as the rear tranny mount I was unable to get to the 14mm bolt that is towards the inside of the car. The outer one is very easy to get to but not the inside one. I tried all kinds of extensions and socket joints but no luck that area is very tight.

It didn't seem to have any defects to it (neither did the front lower mount) so I just bolted back to the subframe and left it.

Only visible damage was the upper tranny mount that I showed the picture of. I don't know why I thought replacing these was suppose to get rid of all movement from the tranny when selecting gears, I've come to realize a little bit of movement is the norm. I think I'm just paranoid that's all.

I can tell that the tranny doesn't move as much as it did so that's a plus
