Transmission Gone? Codes P0721 P0741

....I JUST PURCHASED a 2004 TL from a used dealer and the dang tranny is acting up. I had Codes P0741 and P0721.

Basically what happens is the car drives ok until it warms up. and then it acts as if the car is in neutral and when i press the accelerator the engine just REVS....if i turn the car off for a few seconds it will drive for a little but then it goes right back to Neutral.

I checked the Tranny fluid and it looked good. not discolored or Low. How far up should the fluid be on the dipstik? i wonder if my was over filled? WHAT COULD BE MY PROBLEM!???

Thanks in advance for ur help.

The first code is the Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Stuck off, and the second one is the Output Speed Sensor Range/Performance. P0741 usually means you need your transmission rebuilt.

Where is that solenoid located? could changing it possibly solve this issue? Could it be the torque converter itself that's gone bad?

This is a Real Bummer because i bout this car less than two weeks ago and paid $8,500 CASH...im so sick to my stomach

How much does a transmission rebuild usually cost on these?

If you just bought it, take it the fuck back.

Although these type of issues can be electrical / sensor failures.. your issue is more than likely hydraulic failure.. You can try different fluids. It's too thin when it gets hot, so run something thicker at temp and slap on a trans cooler, but that's only a patch.

Regardless.. take it back.. otherwise be ready to fork out 3K to fix it.

Contact your AG's office and BBB for mediation if the dealer screws you over. It's obvious he knew it was an issue and covered it up. Fraud.

well the p0741 could be either a rebuild or bad sensor. i replaced the sensor beneath the air intake. im not sure on the part number but you can contact tim at oemacuraparts to confirm it but it turned out to be that i needed a rebuild that ran me $1300

I live in Houston Texas. The car is a 2004 TL 115,000 miles. I think that Chitty dealer over filled the tyranny. When i checked the fluid level it was about 3 or more inches above the full dot! Wtf?!

Don't be concerned about it being a bit overfilled. More than likely they changed the ATF and cleared the code. You need to act fast if you want resolution to this without paying to fix the trans.

Iv'e been trying to inspect my vehicle and so far the only additional findings ive found is that there is a strange slightly low wine/rattle type of sound when the car is in any gear Except "Drive" or "reverse". and the fluid level is a little high.

I read somewhere that if the fluid level is too high it can cause damage, the fluid could over heat and cause hydraulic issues. do u think it would help if i relieve some of the fluid and add some "Lucus Transmission FIX" -stops slips and lowers operating temoeratures

Don't try fixing it yourself. It could just end up biting you in the ass.
Go back to the dealer and leave everything as is.

I believe The Texas lemon law only applies to New or used vehicles still under factory warranty.

Wage an internet war and write them terrible reviews on every site you can find. Camp out next to the dealer with a big ole sign describing the problem. hit them where it hurts.

There's an overfill valve on the trans, it won't hurt it, unlike overfilling engine oil which may cause damage. If you really intend on keeping it, you should replace the filter. Add a cooler, and use thicker fluid at op temp.

It won't work, they'll just change their business name. These fuckers do it all the time.

Unfortunately, if I'm not mistaken, you can't file a lemon. You are stuck with what you were dealt. This isn't fraud or the dealers fault IMO, I think it solely relies on you.

This is why "As-Is" prices are a lot less. I kinda bet I know what dealer you went too because one stands out to do this and they've been in business for years.

What you can do is to bring them to small claims court... you have a chance to reclaim some, if not all, the cost for a transmission. I'd talk to Bruce (AckTL05) if he has a spare transmission laying around for a good price.

This is why you should've forked out an extra 1-2k on getting it from an established dealer in Houston.

doesn't matter what state you are from, if you bought a car with certain amount of money and less than 10 years old the dealer are require to give you 30 days warranty on the mechanical and sound of the car. In some state they offer you up to 90 days warranty, I bought my in Connecticut and the Honda dealer warranty me for 60 days or 5,000 miles bumper to bumper which ever come first at no cost. This is another reason why my brother living in Houston only buy used car off major dealer like North Side Lexus, Mc Gath Lexus and recently Texas Auto Direct.

As just stated above most dealers have a 30 day warranty on all cars purchased. Only problem is they don't pay for it and if something goes bad after the purchase they have to call up and pay for it. So you still might be up shits creek. Is this an actual real dealer or a parking lot with a few cars and a trailer as the office?

used Vehicles

Your used vehicle may be covered under the Lemon Law. The Law may cover your vehicle if your used vehicle is still covered by the manufacturer's original warranty (not an extended service contract), or if the problem started while under warranty and it continues to exist, repair assistance of the warranty-related problem may be available to you.

I don't think the lemon law will cover me. What do u guys think

Since there is an overfill valve do u guys think adding some "Lucas Transmission fix" would help thicken the tranny oil? Maybe i can try a temporary fix.

Are there any little filters that could be cleaned? Changed?

In case im stuck with this car i want to try to find a solution
