Traffic Ticket Question
Traffic Ticket Question
ok was driving in jersey yesterday for my uncle's bday. going home at around 9pm on route 9w and was pulled over by a cop. he says i was going 47 in a 25. the last sign i saw said speed limit 40. i was going about 35-40, but if it was 25 then i was "speeding". the thing is i saw him parked on the side with his rear bumper facing me. i slowed down to about 35ish because the last sign i saw said 40. the ticket says that he used radar to track my speed. is it possible to use a radar fun if the car is not situated in a way where he can aim it. he did not stick his head out the window and he was alone in the patrol car. he tailed me for about 2 blocks at which time i slowed down to about 25 miles an hour because i have ny plates and i know how nj cops work. i am definitely going to fight the ticket but wanted to know if the points carried over from ny to nj. i don't want my insurance to go up because of some dip shit cop. i had my mom, aunt and uncle in the car, i was not speeding by any means. i can't believe he didn't just let me go. anyone have any advice on what else i should do?
First off that sucks. They can and do shoot radar out the back window.
Points never used to carry over, but we were talking at work a couple weeks ago and that may be changing - now they may carry over - not 100% sure. ALWAYS, ALWAYS fight the ticket. Every single time I have gone to fight it - you still pay the fine, but they will reduce or drop all together the points - and the points are what matters.
Good luck.

I've ridden with in a police car a few times...one was nice enough to give me a lift when my old car broke down.
I asked about how the radar was working, cause I was curious.
He said there are guns in the front and rear of the car and the readout shows where the violator/speeder is. Doesn't matter if the cop is stopped, following you, or coming the opposite direction. He knows your speed.

thanks fellas, i dun really care about the money but the points kill. i already took one of those defensive driving classes to reduce my points last summer. i can't take another one till 18 months after that.
Couple of things IF you are guilty.
1) Points carry over to another state
2) Your insurance Co. will only know about your points if they request a DMV report which happens if you are a new customer
3) Take the NYS defensive driving course. First off it saves 10% off your insurance, second it takes off some points (2 or 3 ?) you will have to check on out of state points

It's a pain, but it is worth going to court. I know a couple of people who got tickets for speeding who went to court and ended up with no points.
I've had a few tickets from out of state that were never discovered by my insurance company. Not til 2 yrs ago when they did a dmv search and discovered one I had from NC a year before that. In fact, that year the co. was doing a search on a lot of people - looking for reasons to drop them.

it also depends on which gun they are using on how accurate the reading will be (I.E. radar or laser gun) obviously the laser gun will be accurate and you will have a hard time fighting that. Radar guns are easier to fight they shoot out a broad band and if their are multiple cars within 50ft of eachother going in any direction the gun will pick them up and it is easier to mistake the wrong car as being the speeder
