TLS question

Hi guys.

I recently test drove an 08 TLS A/T I'm looking at buying and noticed there seems to be some hesitation/rough gear shifting on acceleration, especially when I floored it. Is this normal? I currently have a 2000 TL and it seems smoother. I was also surprised the TLS didn't really offer much more performance.

Anything else I should know about these cars? While I love the look of the 3G TLS I'm kind of undecided since I still love my 2G and it's actually roomier inside.

change the transmission fluid and the pressure switches, then reset the ECU.

Mine seems to shift smoothest under hard acceleration.

I have no doubt the 3G TL-S is a much better car all-around than the 2G TL-S. IMHO, anyhow.

yea bud post up top seems to be accurate, I think you should work out a deal and DIY, it isn't that difficult. The 3g has 2 sensors that need to be changed on the trans periodically, I am sure you can find the thread in these forums if you search for it. If you maintain those and TOCI, everything should be smooth as butter really. You also have to remember the TL-S is full tip and idiots can destroy the trans easily by being ignorant.

I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a sign of an impending tranny failure. I'll have to ask the guy when it was last serviced but the car only has 36k miles. TOCI?

Defintely ask about the most recent service of the transmission. If they REALLY want to sell you the car, they'll change the fluid.

After I bought my 07 TL-S, I did the 3X3 w/Redline D4 and it made a huge difference in how the car responded and drove.

If all else fails, there are more 3G's out there that have your name on them.

Yeah but probably not a Type S with this low a mileage or price, it was in a flood so has a rebuilt salvage title.

well the flood damage may have something to do with the hesistation of the tranny and such ... i would go for changing the fluids and the switches, but there is no guarantee it will fix it since the car has been flooded and there are many other things that can be wrong.

personally i would get a higher mileage car with a clean title that u can confirm all the maintenance has been done.

^ agree there are a lot of factors to consider now since you mention flood damage. got to ask yourself is this worth it in the long run?

If I am not mistaken the TL you are talking about is NBH with Ebony/Silver interior has around 26k miles pricing is $18,999 correct?

No it's NBP with Ebony interior, 36k miles, $16,200. I'm leery too but it's clean and overall ran well, aside from the questionable shifting, which wasn't terrible.

I have a 08 base w/ navi purchased at 30k miles for $15k feb 2011.

1 year 6 months later sitting at 63,000 miles (22k miles/year) and never had a any serious problems. In my length of ownership I just had to replace UCA and lower ball joints, 3rd 4th gear pressure switches and redline ATF.

What are you basing your statement off of? Ever owned a salvaged/rebuilt title?

I think it was a great purchase. A TL not salvaged title with the same mileage and navi was going for $21k+.

OP if I was in your shoes I wouldn't know what decision to make either... Seeing how I got a base for 15k, $16.2 for a type-s model is not bad at all! It would be nice if it was 6SPD, but even 5AT at the price is a great deal. But the "hesitation" you speak of is really an eye-opener. And knowing it's a "flood" title.... those would change my perspective on purchasing the car....

Hey.... if that hesitation doesn't turn out to be a big problem, than $16.2 for a Type-S with ebony/silver interior (LOVE THIS INTERIOR) is a great steal!

But if that "hesitation" does turn out to be a big problem than you just wasted a lot of money trying to get it fixed... I wish I had a Type-S...

salvage title isn't necessary is bad as long as it fixed using OEM parts and did a great job, some car has light damage look but it cost more money to fix do to part and labor, people (small dealer and shops) bought the car from salvage auction fix them up for DD or selling them and making a profit. I used to owned a 92 Maxima that has salvage title the car running fine no issue, that was our first time bought a salvage car and didn't know about it until later we do some body work and realize the car was rear ended before and some Polish guy bought it and fix it then sell it for some profit (he even admit when the key are handle over that he making $800 off the car and this was in 1997). We use the car all the way to 2003 until someone rear end the car and totalled it out, like Viet say there is people who doesn't big budget when come to car shopping so they choose to buy salvage instead. But that flood title just making me nervous sometime because you never how deep the car was in the water nor you can see the before and after pics like those rebuilt from a collision.

OP I saw that add before on Ebay, just make sure you take it to Acura dealer and do PPI prior to buy the car, the price is great for that mileage because without salvage title that car can shoot easily at $24k-$26k.

If I do buy it I would keep it for awhile, I don't change out cars often. Had my 2G TL for the last 6 years and I don't drive much since everything I need is within a few miles from me, including work. In those 6 years I've only put 20k miles on it so assuming this doesn't require something like a tranny replacement than it would be a good deal for me, regardless of what I would be able to sell it for.

Who cares about selling it later? Ever realized not everyone switches out cars every 5-10 years? There's some people that own vehicles until the wheels fall off before moving on.

But I agree, if you are one of those people who are concerned about resale value of the car later down the road than you shouldn't be looking at salvaged cars at all.
