TL vs RL
TL vs RL
My 2001 TL finally bit the dust at 395,000 miles. It took 3 trannies to do it.
I am in the market for another TL or an RL. I live in Michigan and would prefer an AWD version.
My questions are:
1) If I go the TL route, at what year did Acura finally get the transmission problems figured out? I will not go through that mess again.
2) Do the AWD TL's have any systemic problems (transmission or transfer case or other)?
3) If I go the RL route, are there any years to avoid?
4) How is the reliability on the RL's?
I am planning on spending up to $20,000. I realize that I will have to purchase this next vehicle out of state as Michigan is dominated by the domestic manufacturers.
Thanks for everyones input and help.

2nd gen RL should be pretty reliable. The engines are bullet proof, and the transmission should be good given that Acura pretty much took that transmission and moreorless swapped it into the 07/08 TL's and those TL's have been reported to be pretty reliable on the trans side.
With a budget of 20k, you may be forced to focus on a 2nd gen RL instead of an SHAWD 4th gen TL which will be hard to find with decent mileage for sub-20k.
07/08 trannies are just fine. Those are also the updated years so you get the most up to date looks and features available on the old 3rd gens. As mentioned no AWD on the 3rd gens, but FWD does just fine in any snow I have seen here. Very reliable and solid cars.
Don't know much about the RL

The RLs are magnificently reliable after 2005 (initial year), which are prone to electrical gremlins and funky key positions failing to de-enrgize the system. After that, it's smooth sailing.
As a 27 year old man, I liked the RL and loved the TL
As a 32 year old father, I love my TL but wish I purchased the RL.

my friend has a 2007 RL. its more comfy and luxurious than the TL, but definitely has that grandpa appeal to it haha. Both are nice cars though.
he got his used and it has held up pretty well so far.
