TL versus Eclipse GT

I was on my way home last night with my wife , brother and sister in law in the car when an Eclipse Gt pulled up to me. I knew what time it was so I switched the tranny in manual and away we went. From the line this car took off. From a rolling start this car took off. It seemed as if there was no way to beat this guy. Yes I am ashamed to admit but I GOT CREAMED. We pulled into a gas station because my wife had to use the bathroom, I guess I scared the pi-- out of her. He stop also so we could talk. I asked what he had under the hood and he told me it was all stock. This car was possibly an 04 model stick shift 3.0liter with no one else riding with him but I just can't believe he was faster. Can anyone shed some light on this please. Was it me or is our stock engine just not good enough to compete against a stock eclipse GT?

My friend has "number 2". They aren't that fast. If you stepped on it, you would have handed him his a$$ and got change back.

Number 1 would be a different story against an auto TL.

The new eclipse is friggin fast. I test drove one before I bought my TL and there was no contest. The other nice thing is the eclipse allows you to tiptronic shift to 1st. I hate that the TL does not. That being said, the TL beats the GT in every other way you can imagine. The GT has no Nav, Buetooth, or about 100 other things that the TL does. Needless to say, I bought the TL and did not look back.

Are you in a 3rd gen TL?? Either way it doesn't matter, if it was number 2 he's modded, and was just lying, I've beaten those auto/manual GT's before with no problem. Don't be ashamed it happens.

You DID have 3 people in your car, and the TL already has a weight disadvantage. My TL is significantly slower with 2 passengers.

With just me I've toasted MANY of those number 2 Eclipses... and I have a stock TL-P.

I traded in a #2 for a new TL just 4 weeks ago. No way on earth is the TL slower. The TL should be at least 0.7 seconds faster 0-60. It was the weight of all those people that killed you.

I love how you came up with "0.7" seconds... Got that magazine in front of ya, huh?

I had an 01 Eclipse GT, 4AT Sportronic, and ran against my brother's 03 TL-S on a few occasions. I could keep up in the first gear, but come second... well, it was embarassing.

I can see a 5spd w/ a few mods keeping up with a stock TL-S, though. There are some S/C'd GT's running around, too... which could take on a TL-S without too much problem.

NDX, your avatar is hilarious.

I've never raced the older Eclipses from a standstill, only from like 40mph a couple of times, and they didn't have much of a chance. I'm assuming they were stock with no mods.

Yeah, I thought it was a good find.

Anyway, the 1st gear (in the 4AT) went up to 40, so it makes sense that it didn't have a chance at 40+ MPH. The only speed the Eclipse GT will do better is when starting at about 10, 20 MPH, where it can be downshifted into 1st whereas the TL (5AT) would be in 2nd.

The reason you lost is you had four people in the car and he had one. It is common sense that he would have beaten you. If you were alone I think there is no question you would have killed him

Stomp the throttle in my TL-P at 10-30mph and it will downshift to 1st, or I can hold gateshift. I don't think an Eclipse GT stock has much of a chance against even a TL-P like mine.

The new ones with the MIVEC 263hp V6s should roast a TL-P easily, and maybe even a TL-S without much trouble.

yeah. sucks for them on gas i bet. my friend and i were talking about this the other day. everybody thinks honda should make a V8, and as much as it would be nice they don't have to really. they're making more power out of smaller engines compared to their competitors. considering how many advancements honda has made on the 6 cylinder when they finally get to the V8s they'll be monsters.

i would agree with you more. Unfortunately honda is more driven towards fuel efficency. A V8 wuold be nice but i feel that they will not consider this due to this.

i was spending some time on a rival acura site around 3am this morning (due to be called in to work the graveyard shift last night) and they were claiming that there are information leaks all over that honda is allready well under development of a V8. supposedly this all stemmed from the mugen V8 that was developed for the mugen tuned RL (if you guys haven't seen it google it. a friggin 590hp thing of beauty).

now of course these are just rumors, but it's worth looking into i guess.

actually from what i heard, is that Honda teamed up with GM to produce a V8 for the Ridgeline. Ever since their team up on the RL (OnStar) they have been working hand and hand with several projects.

From what I've heard, the TL-S are a lil slower than the auto 3G TLs. But if you put the TL-S against the 6-speed 3G TL, the TL-S will get raped...which is undestandable.

Actually, I've heard that the TL-S is faster than the 3G 5AT TL. This is substantiated by the torque figures:

2002 TL-S: 232@3500
2004 TL: 238@5000

Plus a little more weight on the new ones.

I haven't seen any numbers specifically. Just sporadic commentary from former TL-S owners that now own 3G TL 5ATs. Most I've read said the new one didn't have as urgent acceleration as the TL-S did. Could be the DBW system combined with the not-as-great low-end torque.

well that's not something Honda is bragging about, but think about it.. A Honda with an Onstar...? GM with a Nav. that actually works...?
