TL Type S Resale Value going down fast?

This is my first post and I am a happy owner of a '05 TSX. I've been looking at the TL-S and I remember looking at used TL-S's the same time last year in January and going prices were around $32-34K. I am suprised to see gently used TL-S's going as low as $26K-28K with around 10K-30K miles posted by other a-zine members. This is a $10-12K hit on depreciation just in 1-2 years! Do you guys think this is attributed to the economy and the weak auto market or if the economy was healthy, would the TL-S resale value be higher?
The reason I ask is because if the economy continues the way it is, I wonder if TL-S could drop to the low to mid-20's by the end of the year? IMO, getting a TL-S for 25K is a great deal but if it gets even lower, I just might want to hold on to my TSX for a little longer so I can get lower payments when I join the TL-S club!

Any input or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

also the 4G TL's played a big part in the value drop.

Funny you ask, I've been considering trading in my TL-S (it has 11,000 miles on it) to a local Toyota dealer for an 08 Tundra, reasoning that I need something to tow my parents boat that I might inherit this summer, please make it happen Dad!

Anyways, the local Toyota dealer offered me 29k for my TL-S, and that was after I had already negotiated a steal of a deal on a brand new Tundra with financing at 0%. Now my Dad just needs to decide if he's going to buy a new boat!

So it seems that the TL-S is holding it's value alright, thank heavens for the horrible look and ridiculous price of the 09's!

Im not sure how big the economy plays in it seeing that acuras have always done good i think the main reason for re-sale value dropping big time is the release of the New Generation of TL's which makes the 3rd gen ones drop in there value same thing with my used 04 TL i bought i got it 2 years ago for 24k now its worth about half that it sucks

Lucky you... GMC offered me 22K for my '07 TL on a trade in for a 08 Yukon Denali .

If you think Acura TL's are dropping in value, take a look at BMWs. I seen used 335is fully loaded with Sport and Nav packages with under 10k miles for only $32k. That's a $50k car new.

This is even more so with cars such as 530is which retail for well over 60k and can now be had in the high 20s.

I think Acura holds its value much better than BMW and many of the other brands.

Used car values always fall fast in the first two or so years, but I do think the economy is playing a part in how fast cars have been going down lately. If you think about it, we see people buying brand new cars at "steal of a price" prices, then that means the used cars are going to have to be that much lower. Why would you pay $xxx for y model used car when you can pay the same price for a brand new one? (for example)

I was trying to buy an SUV, and Toyota offered me $22,500 for my 07 CBP TL type S with less than 25K. So Yes the value on TL TYPE S sucks at this point. So I have decided after paying 36K for it two years ago, I'm just keeping the car for now.

You guys are all correct. That's why I keep my cars for many years. You never get out of your car what you've purchased it for. So I find a car I REALLY like and I just drive it until it won't drive anymore.

the value of the TL-S has gone down so much because of the new 4G TL. Nevertheless, it's value is still better than some other cars. A car I know of lost about $73,000 in 3 years. Imagine how much that is per month, or per day for that matter.

My last two cars got traded in within weeks of getting paid off... and my 07 TL may not make it thru the month. I've got it bad!!!

Same here, me keeping a car more than 6 months is unnormal. I said that when I bought the TL that was it I planned to drive it for at least 2 years. But I have been looking on Manheim and there are some killer deals out there right now.

I really like the TL, but have thought about putting it up for sale already. The look of the car is what keeps me from doing it. I do not think I will find a better looking more equipped car for under $15,000. Getting closer to $20,000 my options really open up.

Yeah this is why modding the car kind of calms the nerves a bit, but even that can only tame the beast for so long.

I bought my TL-S in hopes of keeping it for several years [kept my CL-S till the warranty expired after 100,000 miles]. Luckly I don't have problems with getting borred in a car before I finish paying it, but that probably has something to do with the fact that I didn't finance my cars.

I really hate that someone said the 335i droped in price because it took everything I had to not buy a new one, and now that they might be cheaper I might have to start the BMW car search again

I'm honestly not sure why the 4th Gen would have such a significant impact on the 3G TL, it's a totally different car to me. I know there is an impact, but I just have trouble seeing why.

Raj, you're right modding the car can tame the beast, I have made insane mods to my car like window tint, and hardwired a radar detector [ok stop laughing] to me honestly, another thing that keeps me interested, is just dreaming up and searching for futur potential mods. I try to limit myself to 1 mod a year, so I always look forward to having the car next year to do something more to it.

Phil, I don't want to make you sick but this is a ridiculously good deal, if you're willing to take a plane flight to test it out. I personally would never buy a car I can't test drive first.

I wish I could do that! The TL-S almost failed at one month, lol... luckily no one decided to buy it. I have decided to try and stop looking at classified ads, dealerships, magazines, etc. If I don't know what's out there, maybe I won't be tempeted? lol I dunno...

What you should be asking yourself is what will your dollars be able to buy you a few short years from now...

BMWs depreciate A LOT. More than other cars I've seen. If you want a Beamer you might as well buy one year used. You would save a lot on a practically new car.

The economy definitely factors into used car prices these days. Edmunds and KBB don't account for this it seems. So your "value" hasn't dropped, it's just dealers can't sell them for as much and therefore are not offering as much in a trade-in.

A couple months ago, '05 TLs were in the low-mid 20's so the real question is, how much will '08s go for in 3 years when the economy could be coming back up? Will car prices go back up?

well that sounds like a wise thing to say as far as investing goes, but when I think about my money I also consider that there are certain things i can enjoy today, and others i can wait for a few years. I don't wanna play the slippery slope game, but I don't really want to be driving a corolla till i'm 80 years old, and for the last year of my life drive a nice exotic.

Plus applying your statement 12-14 months ago in my case, my dollar could buy me exactly 11.6% less than it could back then stupid stocks hehehe.

that's ok, the solution is a bailout/economic stimulus plan to compensate for the deflation, which will exacerbate deflation, but we got a plan for that too, can you guess what it is

and btw, deflation is ok, as long as other countries have it worse than we do hehe

Guys, I totally agree with you! Elegant, modding my Type S makes the car go "UP" in value in my Blue Book. Seriously, this car has more on it than I ever hoped for. So even owning it for 5 or 10 years, as long as I love it and it serves my purpose, the value will always be high in my eyes.

Heck, even guys at work say, "dude, don't ever give up that car. There's a lot of TL's at work, but no Type S TL's".

I quit looking at Cars.com and Carmax in my spare time. Now, if I look online at cars, I search for Lomborghini's !!!!

Different strokes for different folks and nothing wrong on proceeding with a purchase if you can honestly say to yourself that you'll enjoy or learn to enjoy it for more than a couple of years, but it's the temptation for short term gratification and feeding their egos that have many people in the mess they're in now.

Deflation will be short lived. Once surpluses dry up and a loaf a bread ends up being $12, then I'll ask him if it was worth it.
