TL Type S engine looks strange
Hi everyone.
I went to to go see a TL Type S yesterday and am not really sure what’s going on with the engine. It’s drives strong and smooth, but this is what the engine bay looks like.
Are there some aftermarket modifications to it? Or is this how the bay should normally look? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
As I understand it, some folks experience cooling problems with all of the engine covers in place and once removed, the cooling issues are resolved. I'm not saying this is the case with the car you looked at, but it may be why the covers were removed.

If you work on your own car, you will only remove and reinstall all the engine covers a few times before you just leave them out all together.
Less work, better airflow, reduces weight. Win Win Win.

The rebuild part is what is weirding me out about the car.
The hood would not latch without me absolutely slamming it, making me feel like it was misaligned. Then I noticed the covers are all gone. Carmax says it was last sold at auction from Texas. Possible flood car that was fixed up?

If you go to see the car again try looking at the radiator support to see if it has been changed out. You can also look under the front of the car to see if the subframe is damaged or brand new. Did you happen to check all the panel gaps? I saw so many cars that "had never been in an accident" have no gap between the fender and door and a huge fender hood gap. Just something's to look for from my experience.
Radiator hoses and cap look pretty new so they might have done the 105K timign belt job already so that's a plus
Shitty positive battery terminal though
If you do get the car, go buy a new OEM one for 50 bucks and install it yourself. 12mm at the starter, 8mm bolt at the fuse box in the back. that aftermarket terminal looks to maybe be a 1/2" nut.

That's how the rest the Honda line-up with J-series engines look. Only the TL's have those covers. If you look in the engine bay of a Honda Pilot, Honda Odyssey, Honda Accord, none of them have a ton of idiot hoods/covers.
Interesting; I haven't paid attention to the J-30 in my Accord in a long time, but I don't remember it looking like the OP's picture.
