TL Trans problems that bad??

I traded in my 2000 civic si. I had 160k on it. Best car I ever owned. And I got a 2006 TL 5at 55k. And the more I read this forum the more I feel like I'm driving a time bomb. Are the TL Trans as bad as I am reading? I really hope not.

I drive my car like a egg now. I listen to every noise. I'm gonna be doing my 60k service in a couple weeks. Do you think it would be a good idea to just go ahead and replace the switches then? Right now my car drives and shifts GREAT.

Instead of waiting for the tranny to have issues, I'd go ahead and replace the switches and also replace the fluid with some of the recommended racing ATF's Im sure you already read about. Other than that you should be fine.

also most of the problems are affecting 04 and early 05 5AT owners.

Tens of thousands of TLs were sold. If it were really that big of an issue i bet we'd hear a lot more.

Cool. I will be ordering the switches and doing them when I do my 60k in a couple of weeks. And yes I have read a lot about the right fluid to use. I appreciate the Feed back guys. I am a little OCD when it comes to my car.

haha im in the same boat... i just grabbed one a few months back (08 base with 42k) n i read all the threads about the problems with the shit transmissions and the preventative steps to prolong it. i dont personally think anythings wrong with mine but i think the shifts were a little "lazy" before i did anything. i changed my sensors on my transmission and it did make a slightly crisper shift, but its still in need of a 3/3 drain fill i think. i didnt do it at the same time because i wanted to see the effects of each separately. i already have the redline lightweight, regular type f, and d4 for my optimum percentage, but man i'm not gonna lie, readin all that stuff has me a lil scared to put it in... i got about 500 miles before its time for my first oil change which is when im plannin on sneakin in my flushes... hopefully i dont puss out!!

congradulations on the new whip!! i really hope our ladies treat us and out pockets as good as we're treatin them

Don't do a "drain and fill", if you have read the threads do a 3 x 3 or a 4 x 3...only way to change tranny fluid.

Op, i think you meant to say a 1x3 every O.C, which isnt a bad idea depending on the fluid you go with (after you already performed a 3x3 or 4x3 which would have gotten most of the old fluid out). after the fourth drain and fill, it should be good for 30k miles at least, but being on the safe side, i'd probably go every OC or every other OC depending on what my drain plug is telling me. our cars arent recommended for a full drain and fill if thats what you meant with something like a machine.

Yeah definitely no machine(flush). I will be doing a drain and fill every oil change I think(1x3). But I am probably gonna do a 3x3 drain and fill with my oil change and the switches in a couple of weeks.

I don't think it's needed with every change- maybe every 3rd oil change (so every 20K miles or so- that's what I do (a 1 x 3), and I changed my switches at ~55K miles- car runs great. I would do the initial 3 x 3 change or 4 x 3 change, then do a 1 x 3 every 3rd oil change after that. I had the initial 3 x 3 change and switches done at the same time at ~55K miles. I'm at 75K and tranny runs flawlessly.

I drive the hell out of mine, and I paid for it. It wont be cheap if it fails on you. I had to replace mine in my 05 and yeah it put a hurting on a brother. But again I drive mine back and forth from DC to the Norfolk va area every weekend. Not to mention the back and forth in do while up in the DC area. And again I have about 160,000 on my TL so yeah I put some miles on it!!

Remember this too, not everyone comes here stating that they have a perfect transmission, people come here to look for answers and post problems, so if you take those numbers to the tl owners out there then the number will look small, that's how I look at it. I suggest you change your fluid every 15k miles, I know someone who does that on his 02 tl which are notorious for tranny failures and he has 260k miles, tranny replaced at 96k. I added a transmission cooler and I don't think it would hurt.
