Is the TL-S rare?
No one knows specific production figures, but generally speaking yes, TL Type S's are relatively rare. I go sometimes weeks without seeing one and I'm in the Chicago area where there are TL's everywhere you look.

They sure are rare in Maine since there is no Acura dealerships in the state, A 3G TL period is rare here, regardless if its a base or Type S. If I see a 3G it almost always has out of state plates. And I have never once scene a modded TL here besides mine which has an A-Spec kit (which really isn't a mod) and custom Headlights from JnC along with a few other goodies. I constantly get asked if its a brand new car, I lol and tell them its an 08.

RARE I wouldn't say that but its rarer than regular TL, funny now town near me has every color available for Type S 1 KBP, 1 NBP, 1 ASM, 2 WDP and of course my only one MRP. CBP is the only exception here. I always joking telling my wifey should get one in CBP to complete the color set. BTW I am living in small town locate NW CT where 3g TL is consider "rare".

I consider a car that I can sometimes go a month without seeing to be relatively rare. I easily see more Corvette Z06's than Type S's and the Z isn't a super high production car.

There's fewer Ss than base models but they are far from rare.
The better question would be, are 6MT type s's rare.

Yeah true I guess it all depends on the area. Regardless though, I have helped the Type S population grow in the Chicagoland area by purchasing 3 of the 4 of them from out of state LOL. Two of them being 6mt's ;-)

6MT is rare. I saw plenty in auto when I was shopping around. I actually went to Infiniti dealership and saw one in CBP, almost dismissively ready to walk on by, expecting auto. When I saw the shifter, I thought I was dreaming... And then saw "SOLD" tag on the mirror... Bummer. Luckily, the person didn't qualify for financing and I ended up buying it.
Drove it for 2 years and ended up selling it to one ungrateful Indian fuck. No racism - pure fact. Sad I sold a car with no accidents, low miles (40k), almost new Conti tires, and well taken care of to such a fucking ingrate that sucked out easily over 4 actual days of my time to make the sale happen.
Of course, the moment I sell, Huricane Sandy hits and my phone is ringing off the hook, people looking to buy something to replace their flooded auto... Should have told the asshole to fuck off... But oh well..
Btw - TL had THE ABSOLUTE WORST of the worst clutch engagements I ever experienced... And even after slave cylinder mod, it still was hard to tell when the clutch would engage. I absolutely hated the MT in TL and after mulling over investing into completely different clutch/gearbox... I decided to just sell it. Hate to say it, but I don't miss it that much for that alone. Great looking, comfortable, sporty, fuel efficient (32mpg hwy@75mph), high-tech and low maintenance. Completely done in by wretched shifting. Awful

I've only seen maybe 1 on the road near me, and another at the dealer sitting in the service dept. I a few regular TL's every day. I know they're not super rare but not common at all.
I see so many base TLs in the San Diego area everyday when I drive to and from school
But I have yet to see another RRP on the road, which make me feel a bit better.

According to Wikipedia there was approximately 335,000 2004-2008 Acura TL's produced. Even if there were 20,000 Type S's produced (which may be being very generous) that's a small percentage of total TL's made. I can go along with what you guys say that the Type S should not be considered a rare car, but by all means its definitely an uncommon car. That's one of the big reasons I love them so much. You just don't see them very often...well atleast I don't. Take into account how many have been written off by now and they will only become even more uncommon.
I didn't see very many Type S's until I bought mine... There are at least 3 other ones in my neighborhood, one in a neighborhood down the road from me, and one other at work, and one borderline riced-out one that I see on a regular basis to and from work. I am the only one with the A-Spec kit though. I've only seen one other Type S with the A-Spec since I've had mine.

Rare is when they have a production car with 1 out of 2000 made. If you are not on the production plate, it isn't rare at all. Old school Galant VR4 is considered rare as well as the Mugen Civic SI.
