TL gets WORKED ON 1st and 2ND
so last nigh my cousin somes over, to show us his new to him 2005 6MT silver TL. so we go ouside and check out his new ride. (its parked next to my brother in-laws base 2006 5MT silver mustang. so i say "looks like silver is taking over this home" (cause my sister drives a silver 2005 4dr Tundra) anyway, when i say that my cousin replies "yeah, but mines the fastest" my brother inlaw looks at him and says "can you drive" at this point i knew it was on... i figure if my cousing is a descent driver he should win! we take them to an empty road with lights that are about 1/2-1 mile in between lights.
here are the results: 2 races (i was in the tundra, left my baby at home)
1st run: was funny, my brother inlaw took off on him no prob... (i guess my cousin forgot to turn off his VSA)
2nd run: light goes green and i notice both cars get a good start with little tire spin (tl got more spin). it seemed like right away the mustang got a good jump. the TL's hood was even with the mustangs rear tire. i see the tl shift to second, (i didnt notice the mustang shift, my attention was on the tl) and the race was a bit more even (both cars seemed even) with the mustang infront by a bit. both cars started to slow down for the upcoming light. (im guessing the tl went to a high 2nd gear or low 3rd, about 60-70mph) unfortunately the tl did not get to show off some 3rd gear power, and did loose (even my cousin admitted it) he said hell be back in 3-4 weeks and wasnts a rematch...(which i will tape, and will be $20 on the line) lol.
so this got me thinking:
my cousing has had the TL for about 2 weeks.
so did he loose beacause he hasnt had enought time to learn how to drive it? the mustang ofcourse should have better traction due to rwd. but i think the car is rated at 210-220hp and 220-230trq (correct me if im wrong) and the mustang is quite heavy too!
so what im asking is, can a base 5mt mustang take a 6mt TL off the line in 1st gear and hold strong in 2nd. OR DOES MY COUSIN SUCK AT DRIVING! also, my brother in law has had his fair share with different cars/ track time. (so im im sure he is a better driver than my cousin)
i should race my brother inlaw huh?

The mustang will always get the jump since its auto and all he has to do is floor it(not much skill or technique involved)...The TL is sending tons of power to the front wheels, and despite the LSD, it is close to impossible to launch hard and prevent initial wheel spin and wheel hop!!!!!!!! Two weeks of driving in my opinion isn't enough to know how to launch properly. . . Let him practice how to launch as easy and quickly as possible with no massive wheel spin and then once he figures that out he can just mash the peddle and go. He will lose ground the first few hundred but he'll come back if he does it right. He could feather the clutch which may help but racing and feathering from a stop will wear the clutch significantly!
A mechanic once told me that if the car has that much power rev it up and start in 2nd gear (which i'm still skeptical of) and i'm sure it'll be rough on both the clutch and drivetrain. Tell your cousin to race him from a roll and see what happens, you need room for a race, 2nd gear and then done isn't really a race.
Practice makes perfect!
