Tire Pressure Monitor
Do you think it would be possible to mod the multi-use information display to monitor tire pressure? If not is there a company that would provide an aftermarket product that would allow you to constantly monitor the tire pressure?

I thought the government was requiring some sort of pressure monitoring system on new cars fairly soon although I don't remember the date - outcome of the Ford/Firestone mess. I don't know why Acura didn't put it on a new car that will be around for atleast 4 years unless it's a pretty easy add-on.

Here's another link for a tire monitoring system - which I have installed onto my current car.

Tire pressure systems, unfortunately, are all a piece of junk. The most simple looks at differential tire speed rotation, the empty goes faster. Other actually measure pressure. Most of them don't work very well so you end up with another annoying yellow light (lilke the check engine). The best tire monitoring system is a hand gauge.

Does anyone have a link for the current status of the tire pressure monitor mandate for cars in the US? I thought there was something coming very soon, but I'd like to learn more. Will the 2005 TL have it mandated?

I do not, and have not read about future laws requiring this but my guess would be if the car has "run-flat" tires and/or no factory spare (which is what manufacturers are trying to get away from), it will have a mandated tire pressure monitoring system.
But until then, like vtech mentioned, nothing beats a hand held check every month - if not sooner...

Yes, they call it TPMS over MDX.
TO nickpoore, recently, I just saw this advertisement, but have to wonder how accuracy it is.

Hey Rets.
I'm not sure what advertisement you saw...
The SmartTire system I had was great.
There was a sensor that got installed around the wheel; inside the tire.
There was a pickup that got the signal from the sensor.
There was a digital display option that showed tire pressure and temperature.
When the wheel was not moving; the sensor would not send data.
When the wheel was moving, the sensor would send data once every few minutes - this saved the battery in the sensor.
The pressure guage was as accurate as the digital pressure guage I used when filling the tires. I always trusted it.
Now that I have the TL, I miss the old tire pressure system; but I don't want to go through the hastle of installing it all over again.
If you want to get one, buy one online and have them intall it when you get new tires. You will always need to tell the tire places that you have it; or they will break it when they remove the tires.
Hope that this helps.

PS. It was isnteresting to see this post resurected - it was from before I got my TL. I now have over 5000 miles on my TL.

Got some accu-pressure caps for my Odyssey a couple months back and please so far. No in-car monitor but I can do a quick visual check while filling gas and less than $20 for four. Not bad.

Tony I got these tips on my TL for free with the car. Did they not come on yours? That's strange. I assumend all the TL's came with them. My father's MDX also came with them. We bought from the same dealership. However, there was no additional charge for these items that I paid for.

My brother has a tire monitoring system on his 350Z and it doesn't work very well. It can give you a general idea of what the pressure is but when you acutally measure with a tire gauge the monitor system measurement is always off by several pounds.

I also bought mine at Vandergriff and it had them on there per my post above. I didn't buy that package they were pushing either but they were left on the car.

here's a cheap tire pressure monitor:
drive to PEP boys Around 50 Cents for gas (depending on how far)
purchase a tire guage $2.oo
taking time at a local gas station when filling up to check if your tires are ok( or better yet use your 2 dollar tire guage..takes less than 5 min) FREE
saving a ton of money by not buying something you don't really need.................................PRICELESS!!!
just my .02 cents....
