Tiptronic shifter
Tiptronic shifter
When starting from a stop while using the tip tronic shifter on the 5AT, should you shift to 2nd or just let it roll out from 1st to 2nd and then put it into 3rd?
Second chance for first
Who's on first?
As you know, when you go to tiptronic, the car will shift from 1-2 whether you like it or not and not a very high RPM.
Try starting in L (all the way down on the right) to hold first longer and then shift to TT mode, up and to the left for 2nd, then manually shift 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 before the rev-limiter kicks in.
Previous posts indicate that may be the best for the quickest acceleration. Let us know how you make out.

If my memory is right, TOV site ever tested 5AT and said SS mode could auto shift from 1st to 2nd as high as at 6300 RPM.
Also, if using D mode, from 1st to 2nd, the auto shifting point could be around 6500 RPM.

Is the fix for this as simple as a software update to change shift setting to function more like the TSX or RSX? Do we see this happening ever? I haven't played with it nor do I want to until after the break in.
Acura says:
A variety of safety features help protect the engine and drivetrain from damage. The transmission will upshift from first to second automatically if the driver doesn't command an upshift in time. In second, third and fourth, the transmission won't upshift without a command from the driver; the ECU cuts off fuel flow to the engine if there is danger of over-revving the engine. The transmission will upshift itself to prevent engine damage in the rare situation where the fuel cutoff alone is unable to prevent further engine over revving (as could happen on a steep downhill).
When downshifting, the transmission won't execute a driver-commanded downshift that would send the engine beyond redline in the lower gear. To prevent lugging away from a stop in a high gear, the Sequential SportShift transmission will automatically downshift to first gear as it comes to a stop, even in manual mode.
This is NOT the technical issue or problem, but the speical design by Acura. The current ECU/Software update from Acura dealership won't give you free control of 1-2 gears, like 2nd Gen. TL has. IMO, you may need to seek the aftermarket mod and chip.
The update mentioned above is to help eliminate early-built 04TL's Malfunction Indicator Lamp ON issue (MIL, Check Engine Light, or CEL...) when revving so high.
