Tinting on Long Island

I just got my TL tinted this past weekend and had an amazing job done. I got 20% Onyx True Black Tint put on. The guys at 'The Tint Shop Inc.' took very good car of me and felted the window rollers so that it would not scratch the tint since the TL only has plastic there. The Tint Shop is located at 790 Northern Blvd. in Great Neck, NY. Phone # (516) 829-7336.

I have not yet taken any photos of the car since it was tinted, but as soon as I do, I will send them to you. They did not mess up a thing, they have a nice clean shop and were very neat.

Where did you get the felt from? Did the shop already have it? Also, price.

Thx

The shop had the felt, they put it in and told me afterwards that they had done it. It cost me $200 and well worth the money.

Do you know if 20% is the legal limit in NY? How long did it take? Did you have to leave the car overnight?

i had 20% in my last car in nyc and never got a ticket, but its not the legal limit here i believe 35% is the limit. it also depends on the cop on patrol, you know how it is in the city.

20% Tint is illegal in NYS, but many of my friends have it on their vehicles and have never been questioned about it and I don't think any of the cops in NY City or on Long Island would make a big deal about it.

The NY legal tint is something like 60% I believe. 20 is definitely illegal, but then again so is 35%. I wouldn't go lighter than 35, because then it doesnt look like its tinted. On my old car, I've had it tinted 20% for the past 3.5 years w/ no problems in the the Queens, LI, and other NY areas.

Done by Touch of Class Car Wash in Smithtown $190 w/felt and lifetime guarantee. I have to say, that they did an awesome job.

thanks for the pics, gives me an idea of how my car would look with it. got a question tho, when you unlock the door with the remote and the dome light comes on can you see the interior at all? that 20% tint looks really dark compared to my last car. can the driver next to you see you at night?

Lightbulb Re: Tinting on LI...

Let me post this one more time...

IMO, 70% above is legal in the front windows (driver/passenger sides). In the back, you could do whatever you like.

Section 375 (12-a) of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law does not allow a windshield or front side windows that are dark. The windshield and front side windows cannot block more than 30% of the light. Seventy percent or more of the light from the outside must pass through the window. This law also applies to rear windows unless the vehicle has outside rear-view mirrors on both sides. The mirrors must give the driver a full and clear view behind the vehicle.

It is illegal to sell, offer for sale, or install glass that does not comply with this law. It is illegal to operate a vehicle with glass that does not comply with this law.

If a medical condition requires a person to have tinted vehicle windows, they can request an exemption from the law.

However, cops may not give you the ticket... if you're not pulled over, IMO.

Lots of ppl having 20-35% tints never get problems or tickets.

I'm interested in getting 35-50% tints with felts installed. Great Neck is much closer to where I live...

Should be the good idea. Thanks... producrdel

I've had 15% for the past 3 yrs without any problems at all. I got it done over on Larkfield Ave in East Northport. He did a great job but the front windows are now scratched because no felt was installed. He said he would redo the windows.

www.thetintshopinc.com 790 Northern Blvd.

I checked this place a few days ago, which is right located inside the auto wash, but didn't have chance to speak with its owner or manager yet.

Meanwhile, there is another tint shop nearby, www.besttire.com 736 Northern Blvd. They quoted me $200, (50%, 35%, or 20% tints) with felts installed (required to remove the door panels), lifetime warranty. Does anyone ever go there and get the decent tint job done?

Thanks.

OK re-opening this thread.

I did an extensive search on here and see that not much has been discussed since 2004 on this thread and 2004-2006 in others....

I was wondering about tint places on Long Island - if these places are still good now 8/07

What I have seen in the threads are the following:

The Tint Shop Great Neck Phone 516-829-7336
Best Tire Great Neck
Lorenzo Bronx Phone 718-994-9100
Top Of the Line Tint Lodi, NJ Phone 973-745-0400

My next question is price here on Long Island/ NYC. I read up on it and people had been paying between $175ish to $400.00 and that was in 2004-2005.

Can someone tell me what they recently paid? And, if there is another place you recommend? I'd like to get my windows done sooner than later.

thanks guys.

go to lorenzo's. I had my tint done there. they tint the entire 1/4 window. no spaces. they also remove the windows to do so, but it looks very good after they're done. when u look at other TL's with tint, 9 times out of 10 you'll see some space b/c they couldn't get the tint all the way down. lorenzo knows his stuff too.

only draw back was that they take a LONG time with the car. i mean like 5-6 hours. so you have to leave it and pick it up later. being that you're from LI, it'll be a bit of pain, but well worth it.

I had Shittown (Smithtown) Acura do it when I got my car. I negotiated them to $200...with felt etc

20% WILL GET YOU pulled over...suffolk co / nassau co will pull out TINT meters and make you roll your windows up (if you roll them down when you get pulled over thinking they won't see your tint) and will measure your tint and write you tickets. This used to happen to me all the time before my TL. Now that I have 35% on my TL, never been bothered once.

70% tint is the legal amount in NY - for front windows, your rear windows and rear windsheild can be as dark as you want.

JUST A FYI - IF YOUR TINT IS ILLEGAL, THE COPS HAVE THE RIGHT IN NY TO PULL OUT A BLADE AND RIP YOUR TINT OFF WHILE YOU'RE PULLED OVER...if they want to. Don't ARGUE with me on this one - my close buddy's dad is a NYS Trooper who drives a stealth camaro to pull ppl over He's done it before many times to punk kids who have ridiculously dark tint and/or are jerks when they get pulled over.

hmmm, i had 35% on my 04 TL and i thought that it was OK, but not quite as dark as i'd like. i was thinking about getting 20% on this car... but it is morrocan red and i have already been pulled over once on 135. maybe i should stick with the 35%?

the 04 TL had the awesome camel interior and didnt get too hot in the summer... this one has the ebony and silver interior and it gets AFRICA hot in there. so that's why i was plannin on the 20% plus the fact that i didnt think the 35s were dark enuf.

suggestions?

lorenzo's sounds cool, i just am not paying $400.00 for tints on a leased car. i wish Rallye would have just tinted the damn car from day one! grrrrr

Here is the difference b/w 35% and 20%.... I used Lumnar high performance metalic tint.... the shop that did it for me asked for $85 w/ life time warrenty, onc piece rear window, and 1 strip across the front windwhield.... here in Florida, having 35% is like having a clear window (as you can see in the picture).... after letting the tint settled in for a few days, it really made a dramatical difference on the interior temperature.

On a different note.... you "DO NOT" need to remove any panels to install tint

Before 35%:

After 20%:

definitely like the way ur 20% look. my 04 that had the 35% felt like a clear window too. how do you feel about the 20% at night? is it really hard to see at night? i had 5% on my 1st car and i couldnt see anything at night.

what is everyone's take at night? specifically 20% tint. can u see everything u need to? or do u miss cars that u would have been able to see if the tint wasnt so dark?

again... to my long islanders.... current prices? anyone get tints here on long island recently?

At nite, it makes absolutely no difference in vision... It is a bit darker than the 35%. it'll take a little time to get use to... it is not as ridiculous as the 5% where you can't see in or out... the inside rearview mirror's tint hardly kick in now (only if someone high beam you from behind like an ass that they should never do).... during the day, it's like every other tint, clear from inside, can't see in from outside... there is a dramatic temperature difference and people can't see you when you look at them from inside your car... with the prices i saw on this forum, I hope you won't get ripped off... if you ask me, $150 is the absolute cut off limit (giving the fact of higher cost of living there)... good luck

I just got my NBP done with 20% all around for $170 with me providing him the felt - he charged $10/door to take off the door panels to install the felt so it would have been $130 w/o felt. The guy I use had his own stereo/tint shop in Franklin Square, LI a few years ago but now does work on the side. Unfortunately, his current job keeps him really busy around the world, so he's really hard to get a hold of so I can't recommend him - he actually hates doing tint nowadays because it's alot of work for $100 profit. The point is, you really shouldn't pay more than $175 to $200 including the felt if you provide it.

As for the tint %, I have always done all my cars 20% or darker - lighter than that and I say why bother. And this my 2nd black car (makes tint look darker). I haven't been harassed (knock on wood) by the cops for the last 10-12 years and that time was because I really mouthed off at the cop.

However, maybe my eyes are getting worse with age, but I am finding it harder to see at night with 20%- to the point where I rolled thru a stop sign once and didn't notice the cop sitting a few hundred feet down the street because the block was dark. In rain/snow, I sometimes have to wind down my window to get in my driveway at night. You can barely see in my car during the day, and at night it's impossible to see inside - and I have a camel (peanut butter) interior. Keep in mind that you may get away with 20% in NYC/LI but cops in other states really get their panties in a bunch over dark tint.

hmmm, that's what i was worried about with getting the 20% tint. i had 35% on my 2004 and i thought it was too light and a waste but i was able to see at night. u arent the 1st person to tell me that they couldnt see at night with 20%. my eclipse that i had b4 the TL had 5% and there was NO way i could see at night.

still debating on the 20%.... still looking for more people on long island with prices....

help me out guys!

NY legal tint limit is 70% thats pretty much what comes on the car...from the factory its 80% because they are tempered and the plastic inbetween adds a slight tint to the window. I have 10% on the side windows and 20% on my windshield
