Tinted Windshield Question
so a few months ago i tinted my windshield and since then My E-Z Pass sometimes doesn't work... Before everyone says its the E-Z pass blah blah blah ive used it in 2 different cars and its worked... So my question is, is there anyway around this to make sure my E-Z pass works everytime i go to the Toll Booth? I had to drive my sister out to JFK this morning and i just stuck my EZ pass and Arm out the sunroof to the window and it worked lol but i dont want to have to do this anymore especially if its raining out... My EZ pass is about 4 years old maybe the newer ones have better recievers? im looking for any help i can get any and all opinions are welcome...
And the last thing i drove up to Boston, Down to baltimore, seaside and once to philly not to mention many trips down the city or out in long island and there had to be like 20 times total my EZ pass didnt read and this is over a 4 month span... Why have i not recieved one ticket in the mail ? i dont get it is it because i have no front plate ?
Thanks all in advance!
Tim

I don't see why it shouldn't read. I have 20% 3M metallic tint on the sunscreen part of my windshield. I have my EZPass tag stuck over it. I did it to camouflage it but I thought it might not read.....NEVER had a problem at all. My tag isn't visible now from the exterior and it reads just fine. I believe the tag uses RF, it shouldn't be a problem. You can always get the exterior/license plate tag that is made for the people with heated windshields like the old MB and Buicks. I am sure you can trade it in so you don't have to ante up another deposit.
(just a warning but you know you are about to get flamed by the forum for tint on your windshield...)

I have the same tint and the same problem. Its a hit or miss with the dam ez pass through that tint. Sometimes it reads and sometimes it doesnt. I use SUNPASS down here.. its the gay FL version and it reads every F'n time.. so I really dont know why NY is behind the ball on this.
Good thread by the way.. this always annoyed the shit out of me too. I was just gonna have my tint guy make a cut out at the top for me to stick the eZpass... worst case scenario..![Dunno](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/dunno.gif)
I am contemplating switching to the 3M tint on the windshield though.. so I'll wait and see.

A comment like that would easily start the flames.....
Seriously consider a 50% tint if you MUST have it on your windshield...especially if you drive in city streets like NYC.
Llumar has different lines of tint. Yours may have a lot of metal in it to interfere with your EZ-Pass since you tinted your entire windshield, not just the top 6 inches.
Check with your tinter....

I already tried replacing the transponder... no go on that.. so save yoruself some time. And the reason you don't get tickets is because when you pass through the booth and if it doesn't scan your tag, it automatically takes a photo of your liscence plate and then cross references your plate number to see if you have a tag on file and then charges the tag like that.. if no tag on file, thats when you get a ticket.

i didn't mean like open it and stick your hand out of it. just put the ez pass up to the glass, or you could mount it on the top side of the cover that you side up and back to look out the sunroof. That way you don't even have to worry about it.

ok if u have 35 on the windshield it should work....I have 35 on the windshield and it worked fine....but since ur ezpass is four years old call ezpass and they will replace it because the same thing happened to me and i called and sent out a new one and it worked fine...the girl on the phone said that the device has some kind of battery inside thats supose to last about 5 years.....idk but w/e....but then i ended up getting the one that goes on ur license plate....its soo much better cause now i dont have a ugly ezpass thing on windshield.....idk if the license one will one work out for you if u use the same ezpass on two cars....gl

Cruisin'
Have the tinter cust a exact pattern of the ez-tag and where you want it (location on whinshield) on the newly shrinked film before install and reinstall ez-tag when film cures. This should fix your problem. I am a tinter for 15 yrs and I do not recommend 35%, instead I recommend 50%. Good luck.
