Ticket for Window Tinting

Just a quick story. I was driving down the interstate in Arkansas. I was only going a couple of MPH over the speed limit. There was a state trooper parked on the side and decided to pull out and pull me over. Some how with his eagle eye vision, he new my tint was too dark.

He used a little machine that clipped on the window to see how dark they were. He said they were 6% (which I think it not quite accurate), but gave me a ticket. He said if I had it removed and showed the court, then I wouldn't have to pay the ticket. I Figured I would just pay the ticket and be done, but when I called I was astonished to hear that the ticket was $205.00. I was expecting like $50. It was in a small town of West Fork, which is known for ticketing people on the interstate. I've had this car for a couple of months and already got a window tinting ticket. I had my last car for 4 years, with darker tint and never had any problems.

I think the black car, makes the tint look darker. Just wanted to pass my story.

I have blk on blk and i'm thinking o puttin on tints. but here in NYC police is real anal about that, so i think i'm going to do legal % which is something like 25 % or 30%. i have to check the DMv website. Sorry about the ticket.

I think the cop gave you a ticket for every window, what an ass!

I've received plenty of tint tickets (PBA cards help), I paid them all. But my tickets are about $60 bux in NYC for "equipment charge".

This cop definitely didn't like something.

PS Those machines are very inaccurate, if your window is dirty it will always return a lower light-through put. I usually drop my windows when I see a cop, or keep the sunroof open.

I hear ya man...

I have a black TL w/black interior and I've been profiled...um, I mean pulled over three times (two tickets) in the last 4 months just for my tint, which is 15%.

luckily, tint tickets are only $55 here...just the price we have to pay for tinted windows i guess

ANY tinting is 100% illegal in NYC, but we still all do it

205!?! jeezzzz I got a tint ticket in FL for 70 bucks!

But the black car adds to the darkness and makes it seem even darker, dark interior doesnt help either.

I live in New Jersey. I've had my TL tinted since last May and I have only been pulled over once for my tint which is just 35%. The cop was a hipocritical douche as his front windows were tinted but he let me go after I flashed a couple PBA cards. I told him I'm a RN and the cards were given to me from cop patients I had taken care of @ the hospital. I suggest you befriend a cop and get a PBA card. They're lifesavers!

Check this thread for a link to State-by-State Legal Tint Limits:

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=164732

Pretty sure NY is 70%. The stock windows with NO tint are ~75%. So about the most you can do and be legal is a piece of clear plastic.

Good Luck.

I get so upset thinking about this paradox. I know it's the law, but does law enforcement know why it's a law? Isn't window tint laws in force so that police can see in your vehicle when they pull you over? So unless they catch you committing a moving violation, it really pisses me off that they pull people over for this. They're putting themselves in more "danger"!

Its good luck not getting pulled over, and bad luck getting pulled over. Like rolling

the dice. I won't ever tint my windows again. I live north of Chicago, and cops love

pulling people over for tint.

Correction. FOund this on the nysDMv site

Section 375 (12-a) of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law does not allow a windshield or front side windows that are dark. The windshield and front side windows cannot block more than 30% of the light. Seventy percent or more of the light from the outside must pass through the window. This law also applies to the rear window unless the vehicle has outside rear-view mirrors on both sides. The mirrors must give the driver a full and clear view behind the vehicle.

If the vehicle is classified as a station wagon, sedan, hardtop, coupe, hatchback or convertible, the rear side windows must also allow at least seventy percent of light from the outside to pass through the window.

It is illegal to sell, offer for sale, or install glass that does not comply with this law. It is illegal to operate a vehicle with glass that does not comply with this law.

If a medical condition requires a person to have tinted vehicle windows, they can request an exemption from the law. Request form MV-80W from a DMV Office or Call Center.

The text of this law is attached below under "File Attachments".

is it even legal to charge a ticket for the tint on each window? damn that sucks.

Jealous cop?

I heard people (not on this board) complaining about tint not looking that dark (30%) because it was black. he showed other pics of white and red cars, with the same tint, and the tint looked darker on those cars.

and yea what is a PBA card?

PBA is Police Benevolent Association. Like the "I support the XX police" sticker you get for a donation to the whatever union/club for the locals.

I have yet to get pulled over for my tints. Just recently got the car and the windows already had the Murder Tints on 'em. I used a co-worker's tint meter and the results were 5% in the front 10% on the rear. Crazy dark....
Massachusetts laws are 35% (i believe), but it really depends on what town/city you're in reagrding the levels of enforcement. And yeah, they can hit you for up to $250 per illegal window. So whatever the fine x 5 if all windows are tinted.

I live in jersey but have Virginia Plates and their tint laws are pretty stiff too. I have 5% rears and 20% in the front. Legal Limit is only 35% rears and 50% in the fronts. I'm always down in va so I'm always a little worried about getting a tint ticket. The easiest way i've learned is just crack your sunroof and you won't have anything to worry about. Also what many of us don't realize, if you have your navi on you shouldn't have anything to worry about either. I usually drive with the navi off but when I'm around where I know cops frequent, I just turn my navi on and make sure the brightness is set at a higher level. Either with the sunroof cracked or the navi on, this emits enough light for the popo to see how many people are in the car, as long as they can see inside you should have anything to worry about

I recently got 40% tints all around (Sept 2007)....In mid-November 2007, To my surprise, when i got off the train (I commute to the train station and take the good ole, reliable, comfortable, CTA to downtown) and returned to my car, i had a ticket for $35.00 stating "FRONT WINDOW TINT VIOLATION". Apparently, the douche went around and gave a good numeber of commuters in the parking lot (and its a huge lot) tickets. I looked around and saw a whole bunch of cars with yellow flappy pieces of paper on their windshields. Luckily its juss 35 dollars.

IL law is NO Tint on Front Windows and allows any percentage desired on the rear windows.
You cant really tell I have tints around noon-time, at the time of ticket issue. Ohhhh welll.

^^How is it driving at night with 35% tint on your winshield. I'm probably going to go 50% I figured anything darker I would end up running over a pedestrian... I can only imagine it would be that much worse when it's raining out

I actually have a problem with sunlight, my eyes being to tear badly. I tried to do this, I even did it for my dad who really has bad vision and on uses all kind of drops. Provided doctor's documentation.

They declined us both, and the explanation was basically you have be almost legal blind, and to have severe and rare allergy to the sun.

My question is if you are really have these problems, why the hell are you driving anyways?

Its not bad at all, I have had it done on my last car as well, I love it. Don't waste your money doing 50%, it will barely be any different. Go with 35%, you won't regret it!

I didn't get a ticket for all the windows, $205 is just the standard for this awesome city. I need to test drive/borrow a car like mine and take it down there and say I removed the tint. There is an acura dealer about 30 minutes away, but that would be a helluva test drive and a risk.

Well, this trick use to work back in the days, they are smarter now, they want the vin# to show also. But then again, in this town, it may just work

NYC cops and judges know all the tricks, hehe.

How do you pass NJ inspection, they are sticklers about this stuff.

How much do you drive? Anytime I had dark tints on my car, they always pull me over. Their excuse is that I'm a danger to them because of my dark tint.

Tint meters and windshield tint

Tint meter measurements are off no more than -/+ 3 degrees. So if your tint was 5% then the meter would read 5%, 4%, or 6%.

I have 50% on the windshield of my other car. I do not recomend going darker thatn 50% on the front. Anything darker would not be fun at night.

....

I think you mean that the meters are +/- 3% and if your tint was ACTUALLY 5% the meter would show between 2% and 8%, i/e. 5% - 3% to 5% + 3%.

Since when were you allowed to tint the front windshield in NY? A few months ago, they said that the front windshield cannot have any tint at all. Now, it says that it cannot be dark...odd.

Actually it says it cannot be dark, then quantifies that.

Section 375 (12-a) of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law does not allow a windshield or front side windows that are dark. The windshield and front side windows cannot block more than 30% of the light. Seventy percent or more of the light from the outside must pass through the window.
Our glass comes from the factory at around 75%.
