Thinking about making the switch

Found a 2013 satin white and kinetic blue wrx at the dealership where I picked my acura up almost two years ago. $29400 plus taxes and tags. Going to take my car to get appraised tomorrow and if I am less than five grand upside down I think I'm going to pull the trigger. Really wanted to get a new car before I left for the military and have always wanted one of these. Premium with short throw shifter and stp exhaust, heated seats and a moonroof. The good thing about this I would leave it stock.... Until it was paid off haha. What do you guys think?

Haha ill never own a mustang. They are nice but I'm not going to be one of those kids racing around everywhere with my mustang. Plus awd is more practical since I plan on starting a family in the next year or two and could use the extra space. Plus reliability. It won't be my daily as I am getting a beater to drive to and from. Just got my wisdom teeth pulled though so the meeting will have to wait until Thursday. Lookin good though, already had a few words with the salesman.

so that means you're more wiser?

if you're starting a fam; why not keep the TL and pay it off.
this makes more sense and is more wise.

oh, you've taken the wisdom teeth out.
all wisdom has left.

I still have four more years of payin the car off if I only pay the monthly payment and for $230 more a month and only five years I could have a brand new car with 112k less miles, a warranty, dependability, and the potential for extensive modding after paid off. After seeing the concept I have given it much thought as the 14's look amazing. Maybe I should pay the tl off by next year and order my own wrx after that, and give the car to the soon to be wife. Haha

Wait a second, you would be selling a comfortable, front wheel drive, safe, and super reliable Honda product for a WRX because that is practical? haha WRX is one of the most uncomfortable cars I have been in, and if the interior was anything like my friends newer STi that thing was not impressive or good for the family and the worst riding car I have ever been in. It made my C6 Z06 feel like a luxury car.
Sorry to be harsh, but you did ask what we thought :-D If you didnt notice im just not a huge Subaru fan lol.
BTW, TLs are super easy to sell yourself. Instead of taking an ass raping from the dealership on trade in, consider buying the WRX if you must, then take your time and sell the TL. This way the car can be detailed and just parked until it sells. Thats what I always do and it works great! I have sold 3 of my TL Type S's on my own two of the three of them sold within one week of listing to the first person to see them. Also, keep this in mind. One of them I asked a dealership what they would give me trade in just for the heck of it and they said 16 grand. I sold that car private party for $26,000!!!! Thats no bullshit!

Yeah my insurance is going to take a beating but with USAA it won't be too bad, and the thought of private selling my TL is something I would definitely consider. Maybe I should look into this more before taking a leap of faith on a car I like. And yes the wrx isn't as comfortable as the TL, but it wouldn't be my only car. My fiancé has a Yukon that would be the main car. The wrx just seemed more suitable compared to the 5.0 is what I meant. To each his own though. I love the TL no doubt. Crisitism is taken well. I might list the car and see how it goes from there.

You're still young. Get the WRX and keep in mind that it is a relatively compact econobox compared to your current TL. You can always upgrade into a mid-size sedan later after your service. If problems occur during your ownership of the WRX, don't run it into a tree!

Oh and haha

Are you trading your car in just because you need a new tranny? Don't do it man! Instead of paying for a new tranny you're going to spend $30,000 on a new car? If the tranny is bad they aren't going to give you crap for a trade in. Especially if you have a lot of mods on your car.

Just fork over a few Gs to have the transmission fixed and your TL will last you another 10 years. You don't want to be stuck with a car payment if you're planning on starting a family, having kids, buying a house, etc.

The house is the new status symbol. I used to love driving my beat up 99 cavalier and seeing people in brand new cars pulling up to their $50,000 house that I could fit in my garage hahaha. But seriously if you're about to start a family use your money on something practical, not something that's gonna turn a few heads.

The only reason I am seriously considering the trade is because I pay $335 a month right now, I have about 4 years and 3 months left of payments if I pay the minimum amount. Where as if I got the wrx for $33k out the door including the rape trade which is upside down, gap insurance, taxes and tags for the 63 months at 2.9% apr financing through Subaru, my payments would only be $570 a month. For a car with 112k less miles. And something that would be covered under warranty, for the most part if anything went wrong (would be left stock)

I wish you the best whatever you decide.

But since you asked, you still have years to go to pay off your current loan on a 7 year old car. You're upside-down on that loan owing more than the car is worth. Why would you even consider going out and buying a more expensive car?

My transmission is fixed, I forked over $2,500 to have the 105k service done plugs and a whole mess of other stuff and the transmission fixed by an indie mechanic that my parents use.

Exactly what I was thinking, and forking over mods has been a majority of my money to this car, well over $6k in mods/repairs alone on a car that no longer under warranty. If I get this car my MAIN GOAL, will be paying it off while I'm in the service and helping my fiancé through school.

I don't completely understand your logic behind this plan if yours. You're paying 335 a month but you're willing to pay 570 per month to get into a car with less miles. You already did the 105k service and you paid the mechanic to fix your transmission. You should be able to get another 100k miles on the TL, assuming you do proper maintenance.

Iv never been big on anything Subaru has done, style wise. I find all of them ugly for some reason. The AWD is nice tho. Good luck with your decision.

Tough choice. Before you do anything, sit down, open excel, run all your expenses in one column. In another column, run all your expenses with the new car. Take worst case scenario for everything, including your worst case upside down amount. Comfortable with the padded difference? Go for it. Otherwise, wait a little while longer. The WRX is only getting cooler with each new generation and they aren't being cut anytime soon. Meanwhile, your saving money for important stuff, tuition is forecasted to increase at least 20% over the next 3 years. You and your fianceé will appreciate the extra cash.

I understand your position, we in the military have relatively little expenses compared to most but be smart. I highly recommend calling USAA and just chatting with a financial advisor about it. They will open your eyes to the much larger picture!

No offense, but it doesn't sound like you're making good decisions here. You still have 4+ years to pay on a car with 112k miles on it? That's........not good. With the new car the payments are ONLY $570/month?

Sounds to me like you couldn't afford the TL to start with, and now you're looking to make it worse.

You need to find out exactly what your current payoff is. With 51 months to go at $335, you may not be too upside down. Not sure what your rate is, but payoff could be around 14k? But since you just dumped $2500 into repairs and maintenance, I personally wouldn't do it. You seem overly concerned about the 112k miles, but seriously, that's nothing for a Honda. You can probably go another 100k on just brakes and tires.

I'm in the camp that says don't do it. You just put a lot of cash into what you have, it's ready to go many more miles based on the work and money you put in, and you're 20 years old. Do you really want to have at least $30K in debt for a continually depreciating asset, be upside down on a new loan, and try to save for an upcoming marriage? This is all a very bad idea, but again, just my opinion. Much nicer cars than the WRX will be available in the future, and when you have the money to buy them, after other expenses are accounted for is when you should consider spending that kind of cash for a car.

Good luck with your decision.

its funny how people here want an WRX but my buddy who own a 2011 WRX with stage 1.5 Cobb AP tune by ECS here in CT put down 282 whp 320 ft/lb. He thinking about switching over to the 4th gen TL AWD with tech package (2012-2013), he complaint the WRX is too harsh, stereo system is shitty (even compare to his previous mustang).

darn, looks nothing like their concept. Hoping for 2015/2016 now.

also, I wouldn't do it.

570/mo is a good chunk of change. That's like a rent payment right there.

I am not honestly looking into the car because it is fast, if that was my main concern I would have bought a gto when I got my car or I would plan on getting a sti instead of the premium wrx. That being said I greatly appreciate all of the feedback you guys are throwing at me. To me the 4k I have spent on repairs alone is more than I would like for a car that only has 112k miles. While I admit some of them may have been to fault of my own I also must justify the most expensive one was not. Indie mechanic said I could not have done anything about the transmission and that the wear he witnessed was not due to speeding around and racing cars (which I RARELY but sometimes did do) That being said if the 4k i spent on repairs was put towards the loan itself I would only be sitting at around 10k for the car where as I stand at 14k now. It also doesn't help that I put 55k miles on the car in the year and 9 months that I have owned it from traveling and moving to different locations. Between full time school and two jobs and living 40 minutes away for a while my daily travel time was more than I wanted. This would also help greatly if i purchased the wrx because I would get a beater daily, and put tops 7k on the car a year. With that being said it would be much easier to end up upside down especially if I paid more than the minimum payment monthly. A new car will have to come sooner or later and I would prefer it sooner than later so it could be paid off by the time I have big expenses such as a house and diapers. No family until my fiancee completes her degree so at least another four years and on top of the classes I would be taking nothing would be due until after the car was paid off. On top of the car my navi is out and only will come on SOMETIMES when reset using the three buttons and then clearing the memory the navi ECU (yes tried cleaning it with cleaner, blowing it out, and unplugging and plugging in the connectors) and if i recall from research Alpine is up to like $570 to fix that instead of the initial $160. And the HFL module went out too which is cheap but just to show you another do dad that has failed. Just seems like at this rate I will be putting more into the car than I will be getting out. Now after the extensive modding (for me anyway) it would be tough to trade the car in and actually even pass inspection. With the new cars mods would not be an option as purchasing this car has opened up my eyes, I dont make 60k+ a year and I have better things to do then trick out my car. While I enjoy it heavily my next purchase will be more conservative. I will call USAA tomorrow and see the salesman also on behalf of the whole ordeal and maybe if I can talk them down enough and get a steal I might just be signing the papers, if not then I guess i continue to dump money into this car in the mean time. But a warranty should would feel good right about now. And so would finally having something I have wanted for as long as I can remember.

If you are not looking for a fast car and something to just drive and be "a responsible family man" then you should just buy a corolla or pay your car off. Once you get into a stable position with a little more income then you can buy a fun weekend car.

But it sounds like your mind is made up, so what do we know. You shouldn't make a thread asking for advice and not take it.

Also, please use paragraphs!

As far as the NAVI repair through Alpine, I called just this week and its at $359 not $570. Unless they increased it again, I plan to get it fixed also, but just my

pay off the car now that you have dumped $2500 into the car.

From what relatives told me, they say buy home first than a car. No need to rush into a new car, so I wouldnt even bother looking at a new car.

I would agree with everyone who says don't do it. It seems your at a comfortable payment and you just put a whole lot of money into your car. I bought my Tl when I was 18, just paid it off. I will not be buying a new car for awhile and wish I listened to my parents and had not bought it. Having debt sucks. Once in awhile when I'm at the dealer I'll have new car fever but then I remind myself what PITA it was to pay off this car. To add to this, every time I mod my car, I get less bored of it lol

i am thinking of something similar..but the logic in me suggests otherwise.

08 TL-S 6MT
approx 50000miles / 80000km
41 months of payments left before I OWN the car. (about 3.5yrs)

Looking at someone 'assuming' the finance arrangement so I can lease a 2013 RDX tech. BUT... its a lease... i wont own it at the end of the term.

The finance rate on the TL-S is 2.9% whereas I would get 0.9% lease rate on the RDX. my actual monthly payment would go down by about $60 so savings are there. ...but at the end of the term, if i decide to buy out the residual..i'd have to pony up at least $24k. (talking cdn lease)

if i wait out 3.5yrs, i'll have a $12k-$15k rare 6MT sitting in my driveway for whatever i want to do with it.

sooo.. i'm still debating this... but the logical side of me says KEEP IT and RIDE IT OUT.

NOTE: i'm married and got a 5yr old kid..but the TL-S is managing quite fine.
