Is there a trick to launching a 5AT?

Or do they just suck?

My best 60 foot last night was a 2.33, and it wouldn't get any better than that. That was WITH the VSA on, with it off, it ranged in the 2.35-2.38 range. Stalling it up, leaving at idle flooring it, nothing changed. Does this car just have no power to pull it off the line, or is it pulling timing or something at a hard launch like that, or it it drive-by-wire lag? It runs VERY well once it gets going, trap speeds were in the 93-95 range, but till about 30 it is SLOW.

My friend's G35 coupe, which weighed 30 lbs less than my TL... hauls ASS off the line, and its the 260 hp version with an auto... the FWD doesn't make that much difference, as it wasn't a traction issue, it was a slow accelerating issue... what gives?

Our cars are mostly highway demons. Race his Infiniti on the highway and you would do a lot better. We only have about 238 foot pounds of torque, which is a big factor in our slower off the line acceleration as well as weighing like 3700 pounds, and FWD does not help either.

The Infiniti has higher torque, less weight if I recall correctly, AND rear wheel drive.

Infiniti never made a 260hp G35 coupe. Only the sedan had 260hp. The coupe always had 280.

awwww that would make a big difference, thanks for the heads up, I didn't know that!

Like I said though, his car weighed 3640 with me, and mine weighed 3660... So I dunno still what gives on the off the start BOG.

Infiniti and Nissan play the numbers game with hp. The 260 G35 sedans were every bit as fast as the 280 hp coupes. In fact, the 240 hp Altima runs pretty similar times to the current 300 hp anniversary edition of the 350Z.

Cars w/ Nissan's VQ35 engine simply hauls ass thanks to lots of torque.

I don't know if it's just me but I had a 2004 G35 for four days last week as a loaner on my wife's I30. To me if felt a little slower than our TL's in every way. Off the line as well as midrange punch. Now I didn't say it was weak by any means but it didn't seem as stong. It was a steady acceleration but it didn't push me the seat as much. I did notice the steering feel was a lot tighter and the chasis felt more sturdy at high speeds. The brakes were fabulous. Other than that I rather our TL's in every other way.

How many miles do you have on your TL? When my 04 was new, it didnt have as much punch as it does now with 10K miles. The engine needs to get broken in a bit. Oh, and when racing, VSA always kills acceleration. Im surpised your VSA off times where similar to it on. My TL-S ran 0.3 sec slower with the VSA on at the track (and this has been consistent with other Type S owners).

My guess, is your car still needs more breaking in. But yes, the drive by wire throttle system in the 04 was a horrible idea. It's the one thing i dont like about my 04. My TL-S feels more responsive.

The best way to race these cars is putting it in SS, shutting VSA off, and gunning it. NO break torquing. And let the computer in SS automatically shift 1-2 for you (it takes it closest to the redline in 1st that your going to get.

I have a 2005 TL AT and let tell you that it HAULS ASS of the line in SS mode.
After the break-in period my car became very fast.I have recently raced a 2005 G35 sedan and we were dead even off the line.

Thanks everyone, yea it only has 1200 miles on it, I break my shit in right... The Vette was at the track with 502 miles on it...

Anyways, like I said it pulls like a mad man after about 30, I just need to let it get broken in some I guess before I expect it to pull off the line better.
