Is there a bullet proof TL?
Hi,
Had a CL-s MT for years, loved it, sold it, want to replace with a TL. Would love to get a 07/08 Type-S MT, but I know the scarcity issue. So, I'm considering an Auto Type-S. BUT I had the 2001 TL, and know the pain of a F-ed transmission.
What are the better years of this generation?
Known issues with Type-S MT?
Known issues with Type-S AT?
Worth buying a non Type-S MT?
I want a bullet proof TL, which one should I be looking for?
Thank you!

Either of those are bullet proof. THey have all the same pros and all the same cons. Maintenance is key with everything and this subforum has all the common problems and their solutions DIY or otherwise. Look at mileage and other condition, also budget constraints, you'll be fine either way.

The '07-'08 generation had the better automatic transmissions. However the manual (which is the better choice) only came in '04-'06. As far as I'm aware, there aren't many problems with the 6spd besides third gear sometimes popping out (or something like that).
And I'm certain that the '07-'08 transmissions are the same for base and type-s. I'm currently sitting at 185k on my '08 base with the 5AT. Just do the pressure switches and fluid change and it should be good.

I'm not sure of a bulletproof TL here on the forums but it'd be pretty expensive to get yours bulletproofed: Armored Cars | Bulletproof Vehicles by International Armoring Corporation
I've read they are upwards of $50k

Wait for a 6MT to become available. They are not that scarce.

will have to wait or possibility paying more than normal TL and you might have to go out state.
Known issues with Type-S AT?
Slow as hell, if you ever thinking any performance gain then its the wrong platform.
Worth buying a non Type-S MT?
affordable price however a lot combo to choose from, no back up cam if that is a must for you.

Thanks guys. Found a 1 owner with 120k for 10k. No accidents, but I think he didnt do routine maintenance. Based on what you've seen/heard, how bad is it to skip routine M, assuming oil was always changed. Was any major service skipped if this is the case, excluding the 105k?

105K is the biggest one. That's a great deal! Just make sure the major service was done. if not, you can still do it and be well under the price of one that has it done already. I'd buy it and then redo ALLL the fluids (brake, transmission, coolant, etc.)

224k and climbing on my J30 Accord. As others have mentioned the earlier automatics have been problematic, mine was rebuilt at 157k miles, then again at 219k because the original rebuilder left some sort of packing material in the lines for the after market cooler. The 2nd rebuilder (who found the issue) said it wouldn't have failed if they had checked the lines first. Other than that, the engine uses no oil in between 7500 mile synthetic oil changes. I could get it in right now, drive 1000 miles and not think twice about it. The '07/08 auto transmissions are more reliable but hold out for a 6 speed, Honda makes some of the best/most durable manual transmissions around.

the engines in these cars are pretty much bullet proof as long as you take care of them and know when something is wrong and dont let it go. the 04-06 auto trans is just as bad as the one in the 2G TL/CL, the 07-08 auto in both the base and type S is redesigned and far more reliable. the manuals are of course the best option for longevity, but then again those cars have a higher potential of having been driven hard, and if you are looking at a high mileage one thats never had the clutch replaced, that is a very expensive job. biggest thing you want to have done once u get over 100k is the timing belt and water pump, if you can DIY you can get the full Gates kit with water pump and tensioners for like $150. If you pay a shop, expect $500-$1000 for the job
