Wondering if there's some kind of "black box" in the 2004-05 TL's.
Even if there's not, what are the probabilities of your car being tracked down if it includes the navigation system?
thx.

Plus, you could find them inside "Garage", too.
But, I don't really think TL has a serious Black box. If we do have, it won't be able to record anything long, and it may only record some particular info. I mean TL won't have a super Black box if Acura does install it. It could be just a better version of ECU codes system. IMO.

I hadn't seen previous threads on this issue and the topic sparked my interest. So I went digging around and found a list of cars that have that EDR or whatever else they call it and Acura/Honda vehiles are not listed, which is by no means a consolation that you can speed but at the end of the day who really knows
...... its an interesting find however.

Our fuzzy-headed "friends" in government can and do get carried away with their ideas. During the former administration, on of the cabinet members (Carol Browner, EPA) was putting a lot of pressure on car companies to be able to guarantee their engines would have low emissions up to 100,000 miles. Of course, once a car is purchased, all bets are off. The buyer can do pretty much as he pleases and in many states, emissions be damned. It was suggested that car companies secure the engine bays of their cars with locks that only qualified service people could open. In that manner, the owner could not install any after market speed equipment or even change his air filter or oil.
Can you imagine the arrogance of these idiots! You own your car but they want to dictate how you use it. Needless to say, this did not come to pass.
BTW, the same Carol Browner wanted to see laws passed that would not let you smoke in your own home if there were children present. See where these kinds of people would like to take us?

Typically the EDR has a memory that records only a few seconds worth of data. This data is constantly being passed through the system. If an "event" takes place, i.e. an accident, the data stream will stop and the last few moments before the collision will remain in memory.
There is no way they can look back and say "On August 15 at 3:57 pm you exceeded the speed limit by 35 mph in I-495. Here's your ticket." Just doesn't work that way. Not right now. Probably never will. How much memory would be required to record even a year's worth of data?
Right now on Long Island there is a case involving two kids who were allegedly racing and collided with a car, killing two people. The prosecutor is trying to use data from the EDR to help establish his case. I , for one, hope he is able to do so. Two young kids (17 and 19 at the time, I believe) in high powered cars traveling in excess of 135mph having "fun" on public roads and two innocent people are dead. People need to learn that cars are not toys and public roads are not playgrounds.

I just installed a 'black box' into my wife's Jeep GC. She is part of an experimental group with her employer (an insurance company). It tracks her (and my, when I drive her car) driving tendencies, acceleration habits, braking habits, speed habits etc. Part of a program that will place you in a lower insurance premium category if your habits dictate it.
Not sure how successful it will be, but I'll let you know what I learn about it. Every week, or month I have to pop it out and upload the data stored on it to their server. Not quite the same as the big brother device, andd at least I know it's there...

1. Most cars with OBD-II have ECU (engine control units) that will track things like redlining the engine, misfires, etc. Really just engine-related issues. So when my A4 was stolen I was able to determine that they redlined the car so my insurance company would replace my burned-out clutch...
2. Interesting post from William_B -- I didn't know they were running trials yet. It would be helpful in the northeast (where police are more stringent of limits) but I'd be concerned to use that in Atlanta. Basically - CONTENT is nothing without CONTEXT (how others are driving around you...). But it is what it is.

But "these kinds of people" were the ones put in office by "we, the people".......or at least those who voted. Perhaps if more people could slough off their apathy and drive the 5-10 (or 25 or 40 or 60, whatever it takes) minutes to the ballot box, there might be different people in office, yes?? Just
I actually wrote an article on this topic - "Black Box Forensics: Driver Beware". I think that this issue of who "owns" the data, and who can access it, and under what conditions, is going to be litigated soon.
I also have been using my EE thoughts to develop an "evidence eliminator" to keep the snoops out of your bizness - it would acess to the flash memory and overwrite it repeatedly with lo and ho values (for you non-digit heads, that means bianry 0000000 or 1111111 words). I think I will become a millionaire overnight. I may actually patent it.

To Dkrudop;
Well Carol Browner was a Clinton appointee to his cabinet, but you're absolutely right about 'we the people" and hitting the ballot box. In the end, we have only ourselves to question or blame when our elected officials (read that as our employees) get carried away. Unfortunately, most of the everyday laws and regulations (especially regulations) are imposed upon us through acts and agency and not through our elected representatives. Thus you have some silly and ridiculous things coming from the minds of people whose credibility is questionable at best.
I like the fact that I am an American and a Southerner at that, with the God-given and Constitutionally-guaranteed rights (Bill of Rights) I have to watch those maggots like a hawk. My predecessors saw fit to pass down to me, and to you, not only these rights but the obligation to see that they remain intact and are not altered (I'm talking the Bill of Rights here). So I get a little heated when I suspect a "fix" is in the making.
I'd better come down off of my high horse and get back to cars. Items of socio-political matter are best left to another forum of intercourse.
How's y'all's TL's doing?
