Sylvania Silverstars

After reading the other foglight thread and wanted to always change my OEM foglamps to match closer to the HIDs I went out and bought Sylvania Silverstars and installed them this evening. I must say the difference is very surprising. As far as color, they still have that bronzish look to the OEM bulbs when you looking at the headlight, although they are lighter and brighter. The difference is on the road. I was surprised how bright they came out. I'm able to light up a 5 lane highway completely and the light is white all around. I would post pics but you really won't be able to tell the difference. I recommend Silverstars for anyone that wants brighter fogs that won't break your bank.

btw, I happen to randomly come up behind my parents car on the way home from filling gas and my father asked me if I had my highbeams on, because the light was blinding him. So its quite apparent these lights are bright! (father never complained about brightness before)

LOL, it looks good. Maybe you could show that thread's link here as the reference.

Thanks.

If possible, I really like to personally see how good they are...

Replaced mine with SilverStar last December. My fogs are always on when I turn on my HIDs. I like how the SilverStar compliments.

Because of the location of the fog lamps on our TLs, many other motorists believe that you have your high-beams on and will high beam you back. To accentuate the appearance and differentiate the lights, others have tried changing to a yellow bulb which I'm planning on doing soon.

Keep in mind that during foggy conditions, white and bluish lights tend to cause more glare (in general) and will bounce back at you thereby impairing your vision as well. Fog lights are designed so that the beam pattern is lower to cut down on this reflection and adding a longer wavelength bulb like yellow will help improve your ability to drive safely.

I understand Brokedoc, it doesn't look like it when you look at the headlights, but the beam pattern is definetly shot to the ground, and I drove through fog this morning, early in the A.M. no impared visibility

Foglight Bulb Upgrade

I just installed a pair of Sylvania Silverstars 9006ST to try to match the white of the HID's. Easy mod, it took me about 30 min, including connecting an extension for a work lamp, so not bad. Test drove and was ok for about $32 bucks, if and only if they last for at least 1 yr. In the past I havent been that lucky. Anyways, I was impressed on how cool it looked while having only one installed on the driver side as compared to the pas side. The comparo was awesome, then I put the 2nd one and learned that then the HID's just overwhelmed the poor foglights. Hoep this helps for any other person thinking about an easy, non-pricey cool mod.

I replaced the stock bulbs in my former 94 Legend w/Silverstars and loved them. They had been in for about 2 years when I sold it and still were going strong.

The Sliverstars put out a blue-white light that probably isn't the best in fog. They are the same wattage (55/60W in 9003/H4 size) as conventional halogens, so I suspect the lumenosity is about the same. I put a set in the wife's car, so I have experience with them. One of the Silverstars burned out in less than a year. Fortunately I saved the OEM bulb's for spares.

Just FYI. I was informed by Sylvania a few years back that the Silverstars should last about a "season's" worth of driving. I believe the shortened lifespan has something to due with the fact that the filaments burn brighter and hotter in order to output the same amount of visible light as a regular bulb (since the light has to pass through the blue filter around the filament). In my Camry, I had to replace bulbs about once a year. The cheapie OEMs lasted about 3 years and still worked. Go figure.

Has anyone else used these silverstars lately? How long did they last? I'm looking for some bulbs that would compliment my HID headlamps and that will last a long time or at least a year? Any recommendations?

Consider the Philips Premiums instead of SilverStars. I've used them in the past in three different cars and have been very pleased with them.

Also, Brokedoc is right about getting flashed by people who may think you have your brights on and the fact that whiter lighting is not very good in fog or rainy weather.

I was curious, is there any real purpose in having yellow fog lights? I remember 20 yrs ago, my father had the yellow foglights and it was foggy and he turned off the headlights and it helped a lot. Is the Kelvin temperature a benefit to using it against fog?

I bought these (Sylvania Silverstars) for my 3G and I don't think they are worth the money or hype. I will be buying a couple sets from http://www.luminicsbulbs.com/ to do some comparisons on. More than likely I will pick up a set of the Ultra Violet, JDM Yellow, and a set of Hyper White Bulbs.

You can't use HIDs in the factory fog lamp arrangement. You'd have to do some serious modifications to do that.

What temperature matches our HID headlights the best? How long have the philips lasted you and are you putting them on the TL? Did it match well?

Silverstars are absolute crap I love how they look, that wasn't a problem. The problem is how long they lasted. I went through a pair for my fogs every 3-4 months for a little over a year before I said screw this and I went and bought PIAA's, have had those in for over a year, they have survived a rock going through the fog light lens, twice, and are still going strong. Look on Sylvania's site they have the rated life of those silverstar bulbs. For the 9005 it is 60 hours and the 9006 are 150 hours. Don't make the same mistake I did, spend some money and get some good bulbs
