Sudden Change in Range (Trip Computer)

Hi,

Whenever I filled up the tank for my '05 TL, the 'Range' on my trip computer would say ">450KM" or so. But since last week or so, it only says ">376KM" all of a sudden...and it's still like that

What do you think the problem is? Has anyone here experienced this yet?

(Just FYI, my oil life is at 60%)

If I'm not mistaken the range is based on your recent driving habits ... if you have been a little agressive it can alter the "projected" range. .. remember its a projection based on data supplied. ANyway thats how its done on the VW . The TL seems to mimic it.

I've noticed this too, sometimes it will be higher than others. My theory was it depended on when you filled up (how much gas was left in the tank). Because I'll fill up between half and a quarter left usually. It seemed that when I required more gas, then the range would be higher.

I think Jesstzn's theory is more likely though

Change in range

You do not indicate where you live, but has it gotten cold where you live? Cold weather will reduce your mileage and hence, your estimated range.

As mentioned above,
check your MID for the average mpg figure. Multiply that by the number of gallons in your tank and you should get close to displayed miles to empty.

Mine is always within 10 miles or so at every fill-up. Then again my average displayed MPG is always 28....

^^^

I'm somewhat surprised, but moreso jealous, when I read about people getting average MPG in the 28mpg range. I'm guessing those experiencing that sort of fuel economy do primarily highway driving.

I drive 60 miles round trip daily (mon - fri), or 300 miles weekly, on the highway and only average roughly 22mpg. However, you can hardly clasify my driving style 'highway' driving. Chicago traffic in the AM & PM isn't even city driving, it's more like 'parking lot' driving, haha.

I've had the TC running for about 4000 mile and average 20 MPG. Mostly city (moderate traffic) commute with some (say 20%) highway.

Those getting 28 MPG are running close to 100 highway miles. Like you said, you'll never get that in the Chicago Suburbs.

Sure,

Steve9207 - I have the exact commute as you 60/day, 300/week. But yes, the difference is only about 10 miles of that 60 is less than 55 mph - most at 70+ mph (and a total of 3 stop lights and a few stop signs etc.).

Byung1231 - Another good data point is your average mph. Without going out and looking, I know mine is near always in the low 40's...

OK, I looked... This past week I was out of town and the TL sat in the garage - but I did put about 90 miles of Dallas traffic type driving on it yesterday running errands etc.. My average mpg is now down to 26 and the average mph was at 38. I too rarely reset the TC portion of the mid in order to keep a rolling average etc.. I find it to be quite accurate.
