No because I don't want a race car/ricer. But that's me. Like I said, it's all individual preference. I prefer luxury with a splash of sport if you will. So the TL does just fine for me.
And I notice you're 16, you'll probably end up with the sti I bet. You're just itching for the extra ponies aren't you.

I'll stick with the TL, thanks.

Insurance will be insane for a 16 year old on an STI. If your Dad is offering to pay though, I'd say go for it.
I would probably sacrifice the TL's luxury for something as exciting as an STI, but that's just me.
Also the STI's adjustable center diff should let you find a nice balance between understeer and oversteer.

came from an 04 sti and the tl just has alot more features and comfort than the sti. But i you want the speed factor than that is the only thing the sti has over the tl. Im so glad i got the tl cause with the sti every jackass ricer was revving me out to race. It gets tired some after awhile.

If I was 16 I'd get the Subie. Since I am 26 I'll stick with my TL a few more years. At 16 all I cared for was a fast car. At 26 I care for a reliabile, comfortable, safe, decently quick and nice looking car.
Hope that helps.

From one 16 yo. to another...stick with TL. The medium amount of performance you gain doesn't compensate for the perks of the TL. My TL attracts much more attention than the 2 STI's in my school's parking lot (granted they are stock). I say save up and mod the TL if you are itching to go faster. Also the speed bump thing is normal, but if you honestly can't control all the shaking...it is sad.

I had an 08 STi. Reliability wise it was a piece of garbage. The 06's are a completely different story. Yes as many have mentioned the only thing they have superior to the TL is performance, engine noise and thats about it. There are days where I get into my car and kick myself in the ass for not buying an Evo instead, but then I walk away and look back and go "Damn my car looks good....<3". You will get fisted worse then a child molestor in prison on insurance for the STi, but given your age and if you want to get into say track or autox I'd definately go with the STi.
It all comes down to what you want. The STi will/can be fast as balls, but the interior will rattle and have poor build quality. The stereo absolutely blows. DCCD is amazing for winter and while the car is somewhat common, you can do alot of things to make it your own.
The TL is unrivaled in its class imo. It has the best interior/stereo/nav. I love the 6spd on mine, and I absolutely love the fact that I can go 80-85 on the highway and still be below 3000 rpms in 6th gear. My 08 STi was at around 74 @ 3k and the older ones were lower. The ride quality, even with coilovers, is superior to the STi. The only things that make me want to change it for an Evo/STi would be the fact that even with the TL-S steering rack and pump swap, the steering still feels numb and not very responsive or alive where as the Evo has an almost telepathic steering feedback. And the other thing is the fwd. When its dry its not bad, but if it rains I feel wheel hop and it just annoys me considering I use to be able to not even break traction on my old STi in the rain. Only other issue I have is the torque steer...but what can you do :-/. Good luck.

I was considering Evo X, Sti "pre 08" I hate the hatch subies lol, Jaguar S Type R and the TL Type S when I was deciding which car to buy. After driving each one I was really leaning towards the Evo and the TL. I researched the insurance costs on all of them and the Evo would surely bankrupt me overtime lol. The TL was quick enough for me coming from a Corolla XRS and way more comfortable than the Evo. I also had a Mitsubishi before and it was a total piece and died at 94Kmiles. I'm 18 and I feel the TL is a fine car for anyone who wants a nice blend of speed and luxury. Also the cops won't grill you as much in a TL compared to you being in an Evo/Sti lol

go to your nearest park, find a nice wooden bench, sit on it, now pretend you have a steering wheel and pedals in front you.... still want the STI?
Sacrifice some entry luxury comfort for a complete bench on steroids...it's solely your decision.

Well you're young.. maybe you should get the STi if your dad is willing to pay for it. I was crazy for the STi when I was 16.. I didn't get a car until I hit college but by then, I considered myself lucky that I even got a car. The TL is a good blend of sportiness/luxury imo but it's up the owner. You're going to sacrifice a lot of things for performance such as the leather seats, handsfreelink, a bigger car, reliability, fuel economy. Insurance is also going to be a bi*tch too. Those were the things that were going through my mind when I wanted to trade my car in for a subie.
But if your dad is willing to pay for it then I say go for it, I know you're itching for those extra ponies.

No offense, but your dad is insane. That is way too much car for any 16 year old unless you're on a F1 driver career path - racing karts almost since you could walk, and racing real cars since you were 15.
The performance capabilities of an STi are pretty much tailor made to get a new driver killed.

As far as understeer, doesn't the STI have an adjustable center diff? I must say that the understeer on my TL is the most pronounced I've experience in my recent cars, but I am used to Vettes or Mustangs with full suspension, so it may just be a FWD thing.
As said by others, you are comparing 2 different classes of car. They both have their strong points for what they are but being that you are 16 you would probably be happier with the STI.

Lol. Come on man, how old are you? A TL is already a great car to get as your first. Ya, I had the opportunity to get an E39 M5 (99-03) but it is just dumb. The maintenance is out the ass, despite me being one to never bash BMW's, I would say that basic maintenance is expensive. And insurance will still be a bitch for you. Keep your TL for at least 6 years, make money, and then go buy something of your own. Geez...

LOL this guy.
The m3 has a same engine as compared to what?
You got a TL. At 16 I had a 85 Nissan Stanza. If your parents are going to get you an STI for whatever the hell reason, might as well get it. It will fit your younger image better I think. TL has a more sophisticated, grown up feel.

I know you're young, but your posting style (probably coming from your cell phone) makes you look kind of wishy washy (i.e. you're clueless and lazy, dont know what you want, cant decide for yourself, etc)
Construct your question well, pose your arguments pro and against, and lay out your priorities. This will go a long way towards whether people dismiss you as 'just another stupid kid' or not in the future.

i agree with leedogg on this especially since you just said you decided to keep the TL. IMO just get what you personally like. if you OR your parents can easily pay for the upkeep of the STI then do it. If you want to be fast and dont car about the luxury features then the STI is what you want. some people are like that and i can respect that.
Theres probably tons of cars you want. M3, G35, EVO, S2000, R8, A5, etc. believe me i want those cars as much as you do but realistically the average person wont ever own all these things.
I had the choice of a G35 or a TL-s. Income is limited for me and the more logical choice TL-s as for a few reasons:
reliability of a TL was better than a G35 IMO
Both cars speed are just about the same. except G35 was RWD
the TL interior in my opinion far surpasses the G and provides much more that the G
Insurance on a G was about 3K and the TL was only 1.2k a year. BIG driving factor there for me.
In your case how do you feel about all the different factors and are you from a wealthy family? its you and your family's money and how you spend it is up to you.

Dude your young and if you can afford it and take the responsibilites that comes with driving fast car ie. gas, maintence, insurance, speeding tickets, +/-attention, and once again speeding tickiets etc. get the STI.....
A wise choice will be the TL, the TL may not be a fast car but it's more fun to drive a slower car fast than having a fast car and drive it slow. Since your dad will helping you with the bill? Get the best of both world...get a new TL-S.
At your age? I'd say you'll prolly go for the STi but you will outgrow it and get something more practical.
