My first car @ 16 was a '70 nova 6cyl. w/no amenities course that was 1976. You're very fortunate to own a car like a TL @ 16. Make wise choices and save your money, in 50 yrs. things will be very different than today.

yes but i like the evo a bit more lol...its sleek...where as the STI looks like an out of fashion sneaker...oh wait, in BLUE lol
either way.. some people need to learn the difference between quick and fast, FWD RWD and AWD..
and how one car can run 1/4 mile in 13 secs, and another in 14.
but if both launched from 20 mph, they're the same.
ive always ignored every single person that threw this remark at me about an AWD car "it runs 13.xx 1/4 mile", bcs i can't seem to ever be able to make anyone understand the fact that if a fwd car cant do good in 1/4 mile, it is not a slow car. Like i said earlier...Ive always been neck to neck with every single low 13 sec car, on rolls, or from any speeds other than from a dead stop.
hell, youll find cars that can take off on an f1 car, but it ends soon after...
simple reasons..f1s are light, and they can't unleash 800-900 hp to the rear wheels instantly....but at about 100 mph, they're making 1 ton of downforce...less as they climb up to that, but enough to start stomping on the accel

Not even joking; After reading this thread so much I had a nightmare last night that I traded my TL for an STI. Not saying it's a bad car but that was a bad dream, I love my TL too much to let it go so soon.

I LOVE seeing STIs at the track that run 14s. People that also compare there cars to road and track times are just unknowledgeable because you will NEVER see those times.

I've made my decision and Im going to stick with my TL for a bit until i save enough money for the tl-s or something. Ive been thinking a lot and i really dont need a fast car right now and i should be happy for what i have. i think it sounded corny but im being serious

I'm still a die hard 1/4 mile person and believe a race is from a dead stop and whoever crosses the line first wins. However, I realize that's not always possible on the street and learning which cars trap abnormally high for a given 1/4 time is very important in knowing what you're up against.
The one thing I can never get people to understand is a car's trap speed does not always determine the outcome of the race when going from a roll. I have run people that trap a little higher than me from a 60mph roll and pulled slightly up to 100mph. Trap speed is a good indicator but there's also powerband and gearing.

Meh...
STI and Evos are quicker than the TL outta the box. Period.
They are fast. Period.
And the aftermarket resources are far superior to the TL. Period.
TL is a way "nicer" vehicle. Period.
TL has potential to be a quick car but one will have to spend atleast 4K to enter this category. Period.
It's all about what you want. Also, don't shake a baby.

From a roll, it comes down to whoever floors it first between a TL and STi/Evo.
In my slow ass 5at base TL I had an EVO harassing me for miles. I finally floored it just to get him to leave me alone. I was going to back out quickly but we were so close I just kept the pedal to the floor. I inched past him around 80mph and got my rear bumper to his front bumper. A 6mt TL-S would've put a few cars on him. They all trap within a few mph of each other. Once you take the AWD launch out of the equation, they're pretty much equal.

Not really, save up for something else. You will be happier that way.

This has been an interesting thread to read. I'm an STi owner, and I've been debating real hard lately about trading it for a TL-S. I'm married w/ 2 kids, and my STi is my DD. I don't mind it, mainly bc my wife has her Murano, and we just take that on road trips. But being 30, I've started to outgrow my boy-racer ways and keep thinking about getting into something a little more...."mature". As cocky as it sounds, after you've owned a car like the STi, there isn't much out there that can be considered an "upgrade". For me, the TL-S is the only thing that comes close (for my needs). The STi has been nothing but good to me, and I will miss the AWD in the winter, but I can't shake the urge to get into something with a bit more luxury, comfort, mpg, etc. Still haven't made a decision either way, but reading all the replies here was insightful.
In response to the OP's original question, it was interesting to see that the only real reason people gave the OP for getting an STi would be for racing/speed. Unless you're going to track/drag the STi (which he didn't indicate he was), then there's no real reason to get the STi unless you just want something new and have the disposable income (sounds like his dad does). At 16, I drove an 89 Honda Accord, and I was happy to even have a car, so you should feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to own a base TL, let alone an STi. You will love the STi, for the performance and the attention, so either way you'll be happy. Just for shits and giggles, here's a shot of my STi:
EDIT: Just noticed you mentioned that you decided to keep your TL. Good choice. Hope my reply above doesn't rock the boat...haha

I wanted AWD because im moving up into the mountains and there is going to be a lot of snow in winter and im pretty sure the tl cant manage snow that well

The TL sucks in the snow, at least on factory tires. I would take my GN on drag radials and RWD over the TL and that's pretty bad.

This exact section of the post caught my attention. So many people (especially my age) think that a car's speed is ONLY based on a 1/4 mile time. That is not true. Ya sure, street racing is bad, but I've done it. I've put down lots of Mustangs and new Camaros and new Challengers. Almost all from a roll. I got so much respect for that, and now, FWD doesn't seem too bad too many people. I too, am neck to neck, if not winning with 13 sec cars.
And you can't blame people for thinking that in Dallas. Dallas' biggest racers run from a dig because it makes things much more interesting. From a roll, they find the right gear, apply enough gas to keep from breaking traction & then run up to 180+. Races are usually over in under 30-40 seconds.

V6 models though, which are slow as fuck & are low 14/high 13s, making them easy to do rolling starts with.

This isn't aimed at you, just venting.

Those are the kind of people that give street racing a bad name and usually do not have the skill or equipment to launch from a stop. They are also the kind that kill multiple people when things go wrong. What I do/did is not the smartest thing but I did it under very strict conditions and a run up to 130mph and on the brakes does not sound so bad compared to 180mph.

I'm not condoning their actions or making a response to you directly, just stating that because they know they're running cars ranging from 650whp to 900+, they're going to take full precautions to keep from losing them & that means no traffic, no group racing, no bullshitters.

The people I'm referring to (Dallas Racing) are very much the same as you, mate. They rarely race against anyone outside their group & b/c they know each other, they know exactly where to go, how to keep people from following them, & when the highways are dead (3-4AM). Believe me, they take their shit very very seriously.

Got it. I know some people that have been to the races down there and my car would be considered entry level over there. An old friend took his supercharged Viper GTS and got beat by a WS6 and came back with his tail between his legs. My only claim to fame is practically no money in the engine and it's a true street car that I used to commute 210 miles a day for a while. I've got the new built bottom engine ready to go in but a lack of funds is keeping that from happening.

Judging by your sig though, I'd say you'd do pretty well if you can run a QTR mile in under 11 secs. A lot of DR is right in that spot when they hit the strip. It's really just on the streets where they start to go all out against most folks.
