Steps to set parking brake?
This may be the dumbest question ever asked on here, but here goes:
What are the proper steps to set the parking brake in your car (automatic transmission)?
1- Move car into desired parking spot on hill.
2- While in drive, with foot on brake, set parking brake.
3- Shift car into park.
4- Release foot off brake.
5- Turn off ignition.
?
And is it true you shouldn't set the parking brake in really cold weather (0 degrees F or colder?).

I remember seeing something about this before.. I believe you are correct; you want the brakes to hold the weight of the car, not the transmission.
Not sure about the cold weather thing.. o_O

I get to the parking spot and hold down the brake pedal, stick the car into neutral, then apply the parking brake, then remove my foot off the brake pedal, let the parking brake take the weight of the car, then re-apply the brake pedal and put it into park.

This is right out of the owners manual

Best way to do it:
1. Find spot and pull in
2. Shift to neutral
3. Pull up parking brake
4. Let off foot brake, the car will move slightly back
5. Press brake
6. Shift to park.
this way the weight of the car is already resting on the parking brake rather than the transmission

this is how i did it too, and i thought i was just being super careful, i dint know it was an actual procedure that was in the manual

I didn't know it was in the manual either...lol
I just figured it's common sense. You want the parking brake holding the weight, not the transmision, and this is the only way I can really imagine doing that. Basically, the only reason you have to put the car in park is so the key will come out of the ignition.

I have heard that if you never use the parking brake at all, it will freeze/rust into that position and will break it or make it really hard to use. I'm sure cold weather has a similar affect but I guess it would have to be really really cold.

I just rip it up from time to time when the car slides in the driveway. Other than that...I never use it. Its an automatic for gods sake...no need. But I dont live in an area with big hills either that we have to park on.
