Steering wheel control buttons

For some reason when I am listening to XM radio and I use the channel change button on the steering wheel it goes to Channel 1 immediately (preview station). Is there a setting I need to change or is this an issue I need my dealer to fix?
Thanks

Have you assigned stations to each of the preset buttons? The Quick Start Guide says it will change to the next or previous preset station, so if you haven't set any, it will go to 1. I don't have my XM activated anymore, so I can't test out what I am saying, but I think it is correct. If not, let me know.

Crap! I have not set any presets for the XM. I will try that now. My wife's Denali just cycles through all channels and I guess I figured this car would too.
THanks, I should have RTFM!

I have an 04 Accord. Are the TL's steering wheel controls illuminated?

Yes, along with the window controls on the doors.

It's annoying that there's no better way to cycle through all the XM stations except to use the tuning wheel, which is a pain in the ass and not especially safe while driving.

yeah, right? that knob is a pain in the ass - too hard to scan 1 channel at a time for the xm.

fish - you have to program all the channels into memory - that is the only way the steering control can scroll,.

That's not necessarily true. I believe you can cycle through them with the scan button on the face of the system.

yeah, but that stops at every single station for 5 seconds - that is a lot of stations to scroll through.

I agree with meathead. The wheel control should have allowed you to channel surf, and then just use the numbered buttons for all the presets.

There is a better way. Use the SEEK button and it will go to the next available station if you hit SEEK +, and the previous one if you hit SEEK -. You can rest your hand on the gearshift lever and press the button with an appropriate finger. This saves having to turn the wheel, which IS a PITA.

I guess you mean the steering wheel control, not the tuning wheel control. If that is true, the designer had a choice of allowing you to select either the presets, or to surf, and I guess he decided more people wanted the preset option. You can't please everyone.

Disclaimer: I don't have XM activated so I tested this on FM, but XM should work the same.

Great idea, Ron. Don't know why I never thought to try that before. Seems obvious now. Doh!

Thanks much.

Yeah, I read the manual but I must have missed that part. I hope my children do better in reading comprehension than I do!

RonA - I need your help. I tried this suggestion, which makes perfect sense. But with XM I don't think it works. The SEEK + and - buttons jump BY CATEGORY when using XM. In fact, if you look, you'll see that underneath the SEEK lettering it says CATEGORY. This behavior occurs whether I have the XM set to channel or category mode. I realize you don't have XM, but I'm wondering if I'm missing something.

As best I can tell, the only way to tune channel by channel in XM is with the P.I.T.A. tuning knob. Someone pointed out that you can SCAN through all the channels, and that is true.

i haven't been able to figure out a way to change the seek from "category" to individual stations.

You would think that if you were in channel mode, where the category is not relevant, that the seek buttons would seek, but TL said this doesn't work, so that's that.

It looks like you can use scan in the channel mode to scan all the channels, but you can't use seek on XM because that only changes the category.

I guess they figured that category was more important than seek to XM users, but they should have found another place for category.

Sorry I couldn’t find a better answer for you, but I guess you are stuck with what they gave you. Keep looking, maybe you will come up with something.

Luckily I put that disclaimer in my previous reply.

Surf and presets should be available on Honda products! Toyota does it!

I love the controls on the steering wheel of my 2003 4Runner. I can seek through it by tapping the buttons up and down, or go through the presets by hold it down for a little longer. Can also do this to turn the radio on and off using the Mode button, which switches radio modes using quick taps.

The S2000 only allows channel switches, and only in one direction, have to cycle through them numerically.

I really wish the TL had the 4Runner style, but i guess it's not TOO big of a deal really. I'm still looking to see whether to get a TL or not. I'm holding out to see what the next Lexus IS is like. But you guys have a great forum here, Reminds me of s2ki.com

Haven't seen it in here yet so here it goes... Can't you also simply say XM up or XM channel 101, XM channel 102, etc? Don't have to reach for the center console that way. Wonder is there is a voice command for "scan"?

Good point, you can indeed say "Channel up" or "Channel down." But that's a labor-intensive way of scanning channels one by one. (You might as well use the SCAN in that case.) Imagine if you had to do that to channel surf your TV. What they didn't give us was a true, quick-flip channel surf capability, except of course for the tuning wheel, which is a pain in the butt.
