SS is not so bad!

I have been hearing many bad things on this site about our SS for the 5 AT. I got this car for its looks firt, lux second and performance third. However, I was @ a red light as most stories start. A BMW328, which I guess is close to the 330pulled up and it was obviously on. I droppedthe car to LO and pulled off with a nice jump, to my suprise when I went to SS, on a bone dry day, I got a full "Bark" of the tires in second and pulled away by a car until we hit the on ramp to 95. I know my dad's "RedKneck" rocket IROC used to do it with a full mullett, but a Sport Lux??? NICE!!!!!!

The 323 and 328s were the first models of the new E46 generation 3-series (but not the first 323 or 328s. They came out in 2000 and were replaced in 2001 with the 325 and 330. The 328 with the 2.8l only has 193hp and 206lbs-ft of torque. A manual 328 runs in the low 15's, so it should be a close race with a 5AT TL. Auto vs auto I would think the TL should win every time. Now a 6-spd TL should have no problem with any of the 328's.
Just some BMW info for ya

Oh yeah, nice kill!

The big issues with our SS are:

1. Slow to respond to shifts
2. Can't shift from 1->2 manually

Otherwise, being able to hold 3rd gear almost to redline is its biggest strength. Nice kill. Drive safely.....

It is becoming a paradox as far as how to get to redline in 1st. Some say L and alot say D, while others still insist SS will do it. As far as beyond first, I believe SS is always best as this is the only way you can hold until redline in second and third. L works as well but then you have to throw it over to SS and downshift to maintain. I have hit the rev limiter before so I know. As it seems to me That D does not pull as strongly in 3 or 4 as SS does. No need to talk about redline in 4 though as by this time you are pushing the top end speed of the car. I have noticed that with VSA off and a full stomp from 0, the wheels do not spin as often in SS as in L and D. Not sure what this implies...
