SS mode...

Anyone else think they should be able to choose when to shift into second as opposed to the computer choosing for you?

Yes, although there should be some sort of warning if you are in danger of damagin the engine. I wouldnt mind if the computer took over if you had reached the MAX safe RPM and held it for over say, 30 seconds.

The computer does take over. It is called the engine speed limiter and the computer will not allow the revs to exceed the maximum limit.

I thought in gears 2-5 you are on your own, but the computer simply limits the max RPM. IE, you could drive on the highway in second gear until you overheat.

The computer will limit the revs in any gear. If you are dumb enough to drive in second gear at top revs, with the limiter cutting in and out, long enough for the engine to overheat, have fun. The computer protects you from accidentally over-revving and occasional lapses in judgement, not complete incompetence.

The warning is there. It feels like someone is shutting off the engine and turning it back on continuously. If that isn't enough of a warning for you, then I don't know what would be.

yeah there is a limiter on the revs. let my dad borrow my ride and he put it in SS not knowing. he told me that my car is very jerky and i asked him how if he had it in D5 he said yes but he pushed it over to the right. he even went on the highway with it. it wasn't until about half way he decided to throw it into D4 and it was smooth sailing. thank god nothing, that i have noticed, bad happened.

you would be amazed at how some cars show up in the dealership after they were clearly abused.. it is laughable.... The people are angry and say well it is computer controlled why didn't it stop me from doing that.

Trouble is the person was not computer controlled...

The 99 TL is the only model that does not limit 1-2 shifts. I love it when I'm getting on an onramp and can pop it down into 1st and go. And with most of my go-fast mods, they love the high rpms.

i hate it too but its good for the engine and tranny because first gear is extremely sensitive and should only be used to get off to a start. there is a way to hold it in as the ecu learns your driving habits. the most ive got in first was a bit over 5000 rpm

no, i didnt really slam the pedal, its a bit hard to explain but u just have to control your foot pressure. u dont have to give it alot at the beginning but as u reach about 4000 rpm u have to push it hard. and no wheel spin for me.
i actually reached almost 6000rpm the other day!
