Squeaky new brakes
Squeaky new brakes
Just purchased new brakes for my 04 MT, I bought OEM slotted Comptech rotors and Hawk ceramic pads. I decided to have them installed at a local bodyshop because they charged less. So far the first day I've had them they've been squealing as if a bus were coming to a halt, especially braking from 10-20mph. It definitely turns heads when I stop at a traffic light. I asked the bodyshop about this and they said this could be normal, due to the material of the brakes, and that sometimes import cars can have squeaky brakes (the guy said he used to work for BMW). Questions -
1) Can it be normal for new brakes to be squeaky initially?
2) If not , should I take it in to a more reputable bodyshop, or should I wait it out for a week?
Thank you for all replies.

remove a front wheel- on the rotor hub will be an arrow for forward direction
Or look on the makers website and it will say-- slots point forward or the other way.
Each maker is different and a body shop is not a brake shop- bad choice of installers
I bet they barely cleaned the new rotors of their packing/rust resistant oil coating, may well have installed them on the wrong side of the car, and the pad backs, pad sliders clips and contact points MUST be cleaned and lubed with `caliper grease`- not something a body shop is going to have either
If you complained of a noise and they did not immedialty inspect the car again- they dont know anything about the brakes.
Bimmers do have noisy brakes and are different rotors and pads than we run~
Go to a real honda-acura specialty shop or a brake specialty shop for inspection and proper greasing- have them flush the brake fluid too- its due at 3 years then every year after
The Hawk Ceramics are very quiet brakes when bedded and used properly- there is not a lot of room of the box for instructions- so MrHeelToe has compiled the methods of several brands and written a very good method that works on the TL, as tested on mine.
Read and follow the instructions- after you understand the principle of heating the pads all the way thru- then getting them hot hot- do the transfer layer and then a no brakes used drive on freeway to cool everything slowly back to normal
May require a few efforts-days of doing it, and may take 500 miles for the braks to be 100 percent - brake early for now

After I installed my Rotex Gold Kevlars (did not have the rotors turned as they were in excellent condition), it took three bedding in trips, the third one being the charm, to make everything good.
This is an important process and one that should not be overlooked.
