Sportshift on the A/T

To all the A/T owners..what percentage of the time when you are driving do you use the sportshift? I've been using mine alot lately..wish Acura had the shift paddles on the steering wheel!!

I use the sport shifter more than I thought I would….It’s nice to drop from fifth to fourth on the highway without hitting the accelerator.

I like it, saves the breaks too, just down shift like you would on a manual.

My Wife tried to lean to drive a standard. She stalled out one time and that was it…She was driving the TL, I talked her into trying the sports shifter. You could see the light come on, shifting gears is fun! The sports shifter is not perfect, but it’s pretty good.

, but if the darn thing would actually shift the gear the instant i hit the shifter it would be 1000% better. the lag is killing me, under hard acceleration i have to shift 250-500rpm (i say this # because gauges are analog with so-so graduations) sooner due to lag in shift.

Totally agree! For just a flat out sprint I get the best performance putting the car in drive and flooring it. A Boxter and I were going way too fast on city streets. Not really racing just enjoying the ride. Using the sports shifter I could stay in a lower gear at higher revs and react faster to the Boxter. Down shifting and holding the rev’s have been what I do, and enjoy, most with the sports shifter.

1st Gear

I would use it more with the ability to shift down to 1st and control the 1-2 uphsift. This was accented by the loaner TSX I had for a week which does allow 1-2 and 2-1 control.

Any programmers out there want a hacking project?

I rarely use mine.. I guess the last 7 years or more of stick shift driving kind of made me like the automatic

transmission and sport-shifting

Not sure if this is true, but when I was shopping for my '04 TL, I asked the salesman about the previous generation's transmission problems. He said the people who were having the most problems with their transmission were the ones who used the sport-shifting feature extensively. Was wondering if anybody heard of this before. I would love to use sport-shifting, but don't want to screw things up.

I use it mostly for engine braking on extended downhill runs.

Not particularly exciting, but certainly useful!

I've had my Tl since March and I use the sport shifter when I notice the engine @ 1500 RPM during city driving, and crank the RPM's to about 3K. It's a nice feature and I wonder if this type of shifting pattern will adversely affect the engine. Thoughts?

Just brought my car home yesteday(05 SSM/Ebony/5AT/Navi) and have been using the SportShift often. Trying to make sure that I vary engine speeds as recommended in the engine "Break-In" process.

nah, it's all computerized, takes care of itself.

i just wish 5th would not kick-in until 65-70 on hwy, and that the other gears stuck a tad longer.

yea...agree about the 5th gear...and the other gears, that's one of the biggest reasons for me to use the sportshifter..i definitely don't like that pattern...thanks cvajs....this forum has been a plethora of brain food...

No I didn't. He was basing his answer just on trends he noticed at his particular dealership.

I understand his answer does provide a nice cop-out, basically in other words he was telling me people weren't experiencing major problems unless they used sport-shifting. Essentially he's blaming the driver, not the transmission.

Basically, I was just wondering if there was any truth to the idea that using the sport-shifting feature will cause problems with your transmission, since we have the same one as the previous generation.

I used Honda's very first sportshift on the Prelude daily for 4yrs without any problem. It was a primative 4spd, it was fun but couldn't substitute for the real thing. It may be true that there is a relationship between sportshift and tranny problem but it's most likely due to the fact that people who uses sportshift are much more agressive in driving and thus more stress on the tranny than in auto mode. If there's any blame you can blame both the tranny and driver.

The TL SS is fantastic…..on the hilly and twisty roads/hwy this is were the Tl comes in to it’s own.

This is the only sport shift(that I’ve driven) that you can heel and toe downshift. Exit response is outstanding.
