SportShift Problems - anyone have diagrams?

(2004 5AT)

I use my SportShift almost every day and recently I have lost the ability to shift down 80% of the time. It seems like the contacts (if such things exist) on the shifter are not making a connection to tell the computer to shift.

I'm guessing overall use (60k miles), a few cups of coffee down there, open sunroof when it rains, and just plain old dirt has built up over time that maybe it just needs to be cleaned. My question is.. does anyone have a diagram on how to remove the console and/or get into the shifter to clean this area out?

This does not appear to be an issue with the transmission as the car works great in automatic mode.

PS: It's been a few years since I posted so I wanted to give a shoutout to the original SSM crew (Represent!). Maybe a "hey" to Neuronbob who recently moved on to the RL forums ( sell-out.. Just kidding )

Note: Sure I have gotten stuck in 2nd gear, stuck in 3rd gear, had the car shift from 5th to 2nd on me automatically (the computer didn't allow it)and locked me out of manual. I've had issues with shifting up and down but these random issues just pop up every few months and go away. Acura never finds a problem and life goes on. While I blame those on computer issues this appears to be a problem with the actual SportShift contacts and not the transmission.

THe car computers won't let you switch into SS if you start to rapidly accelerate, the RPM is at 4.5k, and you thorw it into ss mode and choose to stay in gear. As for not being able to downshift, the computer things you are reving to high and will hit redline or past redline if you down-shift. Lastly, the cofee spilling down there isn't a good thing, i would advise you to open up the console and clean it up

Get some electrical contact spray cleaner and have a good time in there!
Then get acura to admit it does need a trans and get that
The contacts will not cause the sudden downshift 5 to 2nd

definetly not the right part, part 7 is for the lock out, which is what makes you step on the brake to get out of part. if anything is busted it's part 2

#002 35740-SEC-A81 SWITCH ASSY., PARKING PIN & SHIFT $37.26
I will check it out this weekend and see if I can poke around with it.

csmeance:
This isn't related to the RPMs and the computer stopping me. Definately something to do with the contacts. There are times where I can try to shift down and if I keep trying and wiggle the shifter a bit (which does not have room to move) and it will actually shift.

01tl4tl:
I have acura looking into the 5th gear to 2nd gear (blinking drive light issue). Hopefully that issue will not return.

Thanks for the info and correcting me about part #7. I'm actually glad to hear it could be part #2 which will be easier to reach.

if you take apart the switches, you'll notice they are nothing more than micro switches, and are probably dirty. no need to replace them, just a nice cleaning will make them like new again.

Just a question.. did you check to see if your TL had the transmission recall? Early 04 3G TLs were under the Honda/Acura Transmission recall.. I think..

There's a link in here somewhere, thinks it's in the problems/solutions stuff

Found it in the Garage...!

Click! (PDF)

Might be worth your time to check and see if yours is affected

If the D light is blinking, that means there is some interrnal problem with the transmission, and it goes into "limp" mode.

Hmmmm.. I wonder where the problem is??

I'm guessing this all started that sunny day when I had the sunroof open...
and this friendly storm showed up and washed the inside of my car for free

Part #2 ordered!

Thanks again everyone.

PS: Man.. that was a PITA getting the console apart. Oye Vey!

yah know (man.. i just won't let my own thread die already, lol).

It couldn't be that hard to solder up some wires and run them over to the steering wheel.
Then install some flipper or button so you can have on-the-wheel shifting.

hmmm...

Now that would be an interesting project for the 3G TL garage.
I'm not sure how safe it would be to be able to shift while in automatic though.

Here is what would be more interesting. Keep the idea of tapping into the SS (Sport Shift) wiring. Then, add a rpm-activated relay such as those used for N2O activation or shift lights (lights that tell you when to shift). These relays are adjustable to activate at any desired rpm. Now, we set the relay to "trip" the SS-mode to shift at 7,000 rpm instead of the oem 6500 rpm. By the way, the nasty rev-limiter activates at 7200.
