Spinning tires in the rain (wet peelout) - How bad is it?

I used to spin the tires in my integra all the time in the rain - partially b/c its so much easier and partially b/c when its dry out, i was always worried about how much rubber i was burning through.

My 05 Auto TL spins up a lot easier (VCS off) than the integra - how bad is this on an auto tranny? The integra was a manual and I never had a problem with it in all of the 150k miles of hard driving i did on it (though maintenance came a little more frequently)

Thanks!

BTW - Its not that frequent and we're only talking 3-5sec spin.

turn VSA on.

oh.. and I suppose it's actually "better" to have the wheels slip in the rain vs. dry pavement, because there's much less friction and less resistance, so I guess that's considered a lighter load on the drivetrain..

It can overheat the transmission, over time this is bad. The manual trans on the tegs are much stronger than that of an auto. It wears the tires out (not as much compared to dry) but it's not good for any part of the car.

After 10 years of driving spinning the tires isn't fun, or cool for me anymore.

I guess it really depends on your tires.

It's not really bad unless you go from dry to wet or wet to dry pavement. That puts a lot of load on the axles and CV joints. The only time I spin the tires is when I am either stuck in snow or accelerating in snow. I try not to let the tires slip on wet road because of the loads placed on the drivetrain. It's harder with my 6MT than an auto, but can be done. You can do whatever you want to your car so long as you do like you say and aren't endangering anybody else on the road.

On my previous car I spun them every once in awhile (check my name)... yes, it is fun if you do it in the right places and not with others around...

In the wet, I could spin them while doing 45 mphs... not a good thing to do as you lose control....

if you are doing this on the stock tires then I suppose it isn't as bad either cuz when I had those stock tires on my type s, I spun tires accidentally in dry wet or warm surface for that matter lol

now on my falkens I have on I havent spun them accidentally... I did tho turn the vsa off and peeled out in dry pavement... offroad as well and it really didnt feel like I put much strain, I guess let off the gas once vtec kicks in imo

is it bad??? why are you even asking the question, if you do it you're gonna do it anyways so just do it and don't ask questions.

it's definatly not on the healthy side, but then again it's not really on the bad side eather....the only bad thing cud be if they start hopping and jolting the crap out of your drivetrain, but if it's a smooth spin then the only theing that is even slightly getting damage is your tires, slightly though nothing to worry about...in the wet, when the tires spin they get a layer of water under them and that really don't wear them out, also, because they have so little traction, you're putting more load on your drivetrain by jst accelrating in the dry then spinning your wheels in the wet.

i wudnt worry about it, unless you go really extreme

Do you have different tires? Mine slipped because I had different tires on each side and one of them has less thread than the other.

Not sure about the TL's transaxle, but typically on a FWD transaxle that does not have a LSD, you can wear out or break the sun-gear in the differential if the speed difference between the two wheels is really great.

At least that's what I always see people break first when they go autocrossing with an open diff on a FWD car, and they spin their tires excessively. But then again, this was also in reference to the Grand Prix GTP club guys, who have 280+ torque.

I had a Saturn SL2 and when it was wet I would spin 1st and 2nd... Other then that I was nice to the car; no dumping the clutch at 5K. Randomly on a nice day I couldnt backup... Ended up that I broke the diff, and it cracked the transmission housing.

I would advise against beating up on your transmission...

I appreciate the input... i'll probably just avoid it altogether. Its a small thrill, and much more fun in a RWD car. I don't really screw around in my car, i keep most of my thrills to the track on my R6, but since my last crash I don't ride much anymore

Thanks to those that gave useful input

It's like any other time your f-cking around in a car. If it you don't mind fixing what you broke then go ahead and just don't complain if you break it. I'm spare you the lecture and trust that your the only one within a 2000 yard radius when your screwing around.

As far as the spinning in the wet I'd be most concerned if you get a lot of wheel hop. That can be pretty sever and add up over time.

People like me? You don't know me and you're ignorant to assume you do. I treat my car very well and follow all the maintenance schedules. I don't need to drive like an ass b/c to me, the TL is slow. If i want to go fast, thats what a motorcycle on the track is for.

Some of you need to get off your high horses; i'm not out racing down the freeway (many of you posted 100+mph speeds in the "how fast have you gone" thread), i'm not drifting through city streets, hell i'm not even getting to second gear when I spin them. It's not chirping and its not hopping, its just losing traction in first for a couple seconds. I like the way it sounds and feels.

So it's not your cup of tea, ok, i get it. But cars are made to be fun... you think anyone on here needs a TL-S or A-Spec for LEGAL driving speeds? I simply wanted to know if doing this was going to cause any serious wear/damage right away. The piss-ant comments are not needed. If you don't like it, keep your comments to yourself.

Most responsible adults would consider your actions as irresponsible.
Acura dealerships would consider it ABUSE (that means no warranty, genius)
Starting a thread like this and expecting not to get flamed...PRICELESS!
Be sure to wear your helmet

This is the main thing to watch out for. When only one wheel is spinning The differential is spinning at twice the input RPM. On a car with a not so stellar reputation for it's transmission, you're really asking for (expensive) trouble.

It's funny when people post "i r teh stupid" then get all worked up when other people post "u r teh stupid". Really what did you expect?

(Not that what you were asking about is anywhere close to as stupid as some the posts about "I was racing this guy and...", but really, if you've been reading this forum for more than a day or two, you should know the way the crowd here reacts to these posts)

(BTW get back on that pony son. Sticky side down.)
