Well, here is my take on this. I used to own an 02 Maxima 4AT, have driven the 3G TL (non Type S) several times and now own an 07 Accord V6 5AT. My SOTP feel and a few highway runs have left me to conclude that my AV6 is VERY close to the acceleration performance of the 3G TL 5AT (again, non Type S). My 02 Maxima in stock trim would OBLITERATE my AV6 from a standing start but less so on a highway run. Couple that with the fact that several highway runs against 3G TLs (likely ATs), showed them to be relatively short work. (Honestly, I found the 2G TL-S harder to beat when running in my Maxima.)
For its time (and even now), the 5.5G Maxima was an AWESOME performance sedan with some respectable mod potential. (There are a number of vids on the web showing respectably modded 5.5G Maximas laying the hurt on IS350s and G35s. So, I have no doubt similar Maximas can do likewise vs the TL-S.)
As for looks: Subjective. Period. TL looks sharp. The Maxima's style is an acquired taste that I did not like when it first debuted in late 1999 that by the time I purchased my 02 model (March 02), I learned to accept. That said, the 4G Maxima is still by far the best looking Maxima.

3)Quite a few 5.5 6MT Max's have seen 14.2-14.4@99mph stock which matches the times of those that have race their TL-S 6MTs at the strip.
Look at the power to weight ratios and it makes perfect sense. The TL and TLS make fractionally more power above 6500rpms, but from 3000-6000rpms, the VQ35 has a big advantage and power under the curve is what accelerates a car, not the peak from 6200-6700rpms.
When it comes to NA modification potential, the TL/TL-S doesn't stand a chance in hell. The Maxima will be far faster.

- 1st Bold - absolutely true.
- 2nd Bold - no one has really put a REAL nice time on the TL-s 3rd gen yet, so lets not skip to conclusions yet..
- 3) Read #2.. also, not a lot of people race their TL-S.. I believe there are more people to drag the maxima's more than the TL's. So maxima folks, i believe have a higher % of getting a better time than us 3rd gen tl's do.. I believe the TL-S can hit at least a 13.9 stock.. It's just that the car is WAY TOO NEW and as expensive as a dam IS350 and Z/G35, so the people who really DO race their cars will jump on that car whenever the price is down..

I also agree with ballin fizzle.. I mean, the 5.5gen Max's are CLEAN.. but honestly.. compared to the TL, the TL will get the chicks in the car before they even turn to the maxima's.. Trust me, I compared the two with the lady friends, lol. And all said said Tl>Maxima, sorry, maxima owners...

^ you are right, in fact, C&D just did a test, and got 14.1@101mph for the TL-S.

Certainly that's slower than the 2nd gen G35 or IS350, but that, we all know about that since the very beginning. But at least it will beat a stock maxima or stock 1st gen G, simple as that.
