Should my trunk "pop" up when opened?

Hey guys, I bought my '06 TL about a month ago, and I just had a quick question about the trunk release. When I open the trunk with the remote, or from the inside, it makes a popping noise, but the lid barely comes up at all. Sometimes when I'm going to put groceries in in the car I can't tell if I'm too far for the transmitter to work because I can't tell if my trunk actually opened or not. I also have an '06 Civic, and the lid opens up about half way up whenever I pop the trunk. Should my TL be the same way? If not, is there some way to make the trunk open up at least a little bit?

On most of the TLs, the trunk lid only pops open about one or two inches.

with a spoiler it will hardly pop up at all. but it should pop a smidge anyway.

You should be able to distinguish whether or not the trunk is open. Mine pops up a few inches. Looking from the side or from the front (through the windows), I can still see the trunk pop open.

Maybe you should invest in the upgrade spring that comes with the wing spoiler.

I got a wing installeda few weeks ago, and I didn't know that it actually came with a better spring. I figured that the weight of the wing was part of the problem, but I wasn't sure if there was a fix/upgrade. The dealership probably did install the spring, but I guess it doesn't work too well. I guess I'll just have to live with this little annoyance, but at least I'm not alone. Thank you all for the info BTW.

If it's an OEM wing, it comes with an "upgraded" spring. If it's an aftermarket wing (like a majority of those found on eBay), the spring is not included.

Are you sure the dealer installed the spring? From what I've read, the spring pops the trunk up a little at least.

Yeah It's an OEM wing, but I don't know how to tell if they installed the spring or not. I went to get something out of the trunk a little while ago and it popped up maybe a 1/4". I also just remembered that my Honda's trunk lid used to hold at any position for the first 8 months (it gradually wore down I guess). Is the TL's trunk lid just too heavy? or is it just a crappy spring and crappy hinges? I'm gonna have a better look and compare the two in the morning, but do you think this is something I should give the dealer a call about?

My '04 pops open visibly several inches and my '05 just barely pops open. Neither have the optional or an aftermarket spoiler.

I think my trunk used to 'pop' more then it does currently. I figure it's that the trunk is sticking to the rubber weatherstripping, but I haven't tried lubing it up with and 303 aerospace yet. Other then that, nothing much has changed. I'd say mine pops about an inch currently.

I installed the wing spoiler and did not install the new springs yet. My trunk barely moves with the stock springs.

Mine barely moves...no spoiler. On my last car, I adjusted the springs so the trunk would actually open when popped. I haven't looked at this car to see if there is any adjustment.

The upgraded trunk spring for the OEM decklid spoiler has a yellow mark at each end. My old stock spring had no markings. Maybe the yellow marking is the same for the OEM wing spoiler. I had my dealer install the new spring for free thanks to my service advisor.

My trunk still opens the same from before. I thought it was made to barely pop-up to avoid rain or snow from getting in & also for privacy.

This is a feature I don't like, esp. when my arms are loaded down with groceries.

Beware when it's raining. If you lift the hood quickly all the rain pours down into the trunk.

My trunk is wierd. Half of the time it will make the popping sound and not move an inch, and other times it will open a few inches...not really a big deal but something to ponder...

Guys, I believe they designed the trunk to only pop up an inch or two for a reason. I think the idea is that if you accidentally activate the trunk release while there is an obstruction in the way of the trunk lid (either an object or a person), then the lid could get scratched or someone could get hurt if the trunk lid opened quickly/all the way.

Is it annoying? A little. I don't think it's too hard to open the trunk with a handful of groceries, and if you just wait until you're within 20 feet or so of the car before you active the trunk release, you don't have to worry about whether or not you're in range; you'll just know it's open.

If having the trunk only open a tiny amount saves Acura a lawsuit because otherwise some idiot would somehow manage to hurt themselves with a trunk that opened all the way, then I say the amount of money I saved on the car (from Acura not having to pass those settlement costs on to me) is worth it.

What did you tell the dealer that they installed the springs for free ???? I'm gonna try to get them to upgrade mine too without the purchase of any wing.

Actually, I dont care about it hitting somebody as much as I care about it being opened accidentally while driving.

Does anybody have the upgraded springs that come with the spoiler...without the spoiler? I am/was tempted to do this, but I want to know what its like first.

Minivans and some SUV's have automatic lift gates/doors (and like I said before, my Civic's trunk opens up about half way), so I doubt it's a safety issue. I'm no lawyer, but I don't think some idiot who somehow managed to injure him/herself with a trunk release would have much of a case. If I'm wrong, then I'll go accidentally smash my thumb in the door and cash in right now. Also, there's probably a greater risk of scratching your paint by having something hanging off your hand (like a grocery bag) and rubbing up against the bumper while you're trying to get your hand under the lid.

It's really not a huge deal, I don't even want the trunk lid to open up all the way. I just want it to pop up enough for me to be able to put my hand on the lip, instead of underneath the spoiler, and open it. Like someone mentioned earlier, it's just a minor inconvenience when you have your hands full.

Yeah, that's true, but if everybody remembered to use their remote within range, then we wouldn't need to have the lights flash and the "beep" to be sure that our doors locked/unlocked.

in my 04, it pops up about 5-6 inches also and i have no problem. I have the stock springs and no wing. i also recently put 303 on the weatherseals in the trunk, that may have helped.

I think the trunk should open in two steps. When you press the trunk release button once, it should open it a couple of inches. Pressing a second time opens the trunk half way. In this way, it can accommodate all of us, regardless of our preference.

Mine opens about 3/4 inch, Just enough to slip my finger under the corner of the hood to lift it. No deck spoiler. Doesn't bother me.

Oddly enough this is something I noticed between the '04 I traded and the '06 I just bought. The '04 seemed to open at least 1/2 way, while the '06 just barely budges. I go in the trunk a lot (not putting anything in the back seat!) so it is pretty annoying.

I installed the OEM decklid spoiler myself, but didn't install the upgraded spring which came w/ the decklid I bought from Tim at Hondacuraworld.com. Since all I needed was the special spring removal tool from the dealer, I removed the clips & moved the carpeted panel out of the way. When I got to the dealer, I asked the service advisor if I could borrow the tool or have them do it. He said he would take care of it & when I came back they installed the upgraded spring & adjusted my headlight for no charge. Also, they put back the clips & trim I removed which I didn't expect them to do.

I don't think they would upgrade your stock spring w/out buying the OEM wing or decklid which contains the new spring for free. Maybe you can have them adjust the clearance for the trunk to your satisfaction if possible.
