Should I go to a dealer for rattles?
Hi,
I just bought an 06 TL and so far so good but it has some rattles on the drivers door, the center console, and where the cup holders are. The drivers door is what is the most however.
What has been your guys experience regarding getting these problems rectified by the dealer? Or is it a waste of time or do they make it even worse. I will be taking it to Rallye Acura in Long Island.
Thanks for your input.

Personally I think the risk of the dealer making the rattles worse is too great to take it back. Do a search of this site and you will find some good DIY fixes for most of them.

i have had my car to the dealer 4 times, 3 for attempted misc noise fixes... 2 of which were resolved... windows up and down clunking (replaced both front regulators) steering had a tick in it (replaced steering rack.. didnt fix) ended up being the heat sheild on pass side of rack.. replaced and all good. got a brand new rack for nada! fine with me.
noisey sunroof... sounds like no lube so they adjusted and lubed... still does it.
upper window when shut sounds like 2 balloons rubbing together on both fronts... did tsb and replaced all window seals... still does it. 3 TIMES no fix!
center console... makes sounds like its cracking... no fix!
So i on the 4th time bring it in and the service writer puts me in a loaner (09 tsx destroyed.. stains all over, chk engine light one, moldings peeling off all over car, and front grille chrome peeling size of your palm!) ten mins after leaving service mgr calls me... never met him or spoke with him and he in an attitude toned voice asks me to come back and i say im almost home, so he says can u come tomorrow? i say sure around 3. he says, ok bye. I say, wait.... is there a problem? he says, yeah we need to talk about your car, there is crap missing on it and things changed so we arent touching it until you come back.
Next day i come in to be sat in mgr's ofc and he proceeds to tell me my car is a highly modified vehicle and the wrnty is now void! tho i was at 50,700 of the 52,500. i say why and how is it "heavily modified"? he says the engine cover is gone, all covers around engine are gone, the tower brace is gone, you put some kind of spacer under the upper manifold so you cut the hood to allow it to close. i looked over your paper work and it seems we replaced your regulators and the mechanic mentioned you have some kind of roll up modulator in there, you also have the front brembo brakes that didnt come on an auto 06 base, you installed the aspec ground kit and suspension. i spoke with acura corp in california and they said noway they will cover your vehicle and now the vin is red flagged and restricted at any dlr in the country. i said how does all i have done have anything to do with the window noises. he said you have taken door apart and modified so much on the car we dont know what you may or may not have done to it that could cause these issues. the car is warranted based on how it came from the factory. so i got pissed and told him to give me my keys and walked out.
though it does suck, i do understand what they are saying and how the warranty covers the car how it rolls out of the factory. No big deal really to me.
All im saying tho is lesson learned for me and if you have modified your car in anyway your at your own risk. the first 3 times i took the car in for probs it was not an issue and all the mods but for the IM spacer were there at the time and didnt stop them b4. guess by the 4th time issues not being fixed he was notified and got the mechanic and after going over it and him sending pics and talking with acura folks they said no more for my car... hell was even told they really cant even service the vehicle anymore!!

Rattles are really hard to diagnos and find. You can try the dealership or try to fix them yourself. Here are a few threads that may help:
Door rattle:

Center console or speaker:

I found all of this in the 3G garage:

trust azine members who have fixed them- see those DIY threads
The dealer can only get paid by acura on warranty jobs if it was a part or labor failure that verifiable as OEM problem~
Once you open the door panels and change the rollup- thats a directly relatable failure for windows- and you have removed a door panel so its not factory sealed anymore
If you lower the car its no longer covered for CV joints and lowered cars on different tires are prone to more rattles from stiffer ride- or stiffer suspension
The plastic engine covers are to mask many noises- once you remove those and start adding body kits,,
the strut tower bar holds the body panels in place more than the suspension--remove that and expect noises from moving sheet metal--cars are really just a future beer can in disguise
how can the dealer track down factory noise from new noise?
This is about them getting paid for a techs time- warranty pays about half of normal labor rate they could be getting from someone else with real work.
Rattles are the worst- right after electrical shorts
what was that about cutting the hood so your IM spacer fit? how big a spacer did you install?
looks like a blower coming thru a wide open hole in the hood?
Its within acuras rights (fine print no doubt) to cancel the cars warranty on a heavily modded vehicle, doesnt happen often-- but you are not the first on here with same thing

try some silicone spray lube on all the rubber trim in the sunroof and the door seals
check the screws for the track
Spray some silicone in the window track felt for easier window motion
Clean the doorsills where the rubber seal will contact, and wax them with car wax
Keep up the shine on painted door parts with QD-quick detailer spray,, brand of your choosing

If it is under warranty I would take it to the dealer. On my '05 TL they replaced the drivers mirror, rubber door seals and applied some sort of clear film on the door pillar where the seal meets when the door is closed. This solved all the squeeks and rattles the dealer had previously tried to remove by simply cleaning and lubricating the door seals which if lucky kept the squeeks away for maybe a day or two. The dealer did say the driver mirror was redesigned with extra padding to isolate the the plastic where the mirror mounts to the door to reduce rubbing noise.

even more amazing to me: is how many people drive with the heavily amped stereo cranked up- shaking the very cardboard is attached to, vibrating all the glass, making hidden screws back out slightly, and the door panels and outer skins flexing with each beat..
And then wonder why the car has so many rattles
And then wonder why the car has so many rattles

The dealer only fixed one rattle that I brought to their attention. All the others, the hubby and I fixed on our own either by the threads posted here or by self-diagnosis.
