Should I do Valve Stem Seals with heads off?

Replacing head gaskets on 2007 240k mile TL - do you think I should go through the trouble replacing the valve stem seals or do these things last basically forever? Not seeing any smoke or anything off before it was taken apart, but also know that since the heads are off, this will be the only time I can do it. Also don't want to have regrets by messing with them if I don't have to.

Totally depends on how far YOU want to go with refreshing the head.
IF YOU dont feel like or need to replace the stem seals, then probably no need.

totally up to you and your time frame and part availability.
IF YOU are someone who has a need to get things done correctly, then by all means, replace the stem seals.
IF YOU are someone who doesnt care about the finer details...then dont do it.

IF YOU are a person who needs to do things twice in order to get something correct, probably not worth touching them, as you say...you'd probably regret by messing something up.

totally depends on you.

if I was in your position, I wouldn't mess with them unless they were showing signs of wear.
I am the kind of person that needs to do things twice. it would take me 1 time to learn, then the 2nd time to perfect my technique.

If I were in your position, I would only do them if they were showing signs of wear and if I had the time and parts available to get it done.
if not showing signs of wear and I didnt have the time nor the parts on hand, I would say fuck it and put the heads back on

The hardest part is knowing that if I don't do them now, and they wear out in 10k for example..then it's going to be bad.

Also the thought that the car does have 240k on it..

so it seems as if you are a person that likes to do things correctly, that cares about the finer details!

would love to hear your thoughts on the process, perhaps even documenting it for us? either way, definitely update us when you get the job done!

I agree with Justinspace, it could be worth it, if you think they’ll fail prematurely. It could be considered a, while you’re in there type job, but then again, no. Idk. I have no experience to say either way.

leave them be! I'd suggest cleaning up the intake manifold/egr passage and also replace pcv at same time. Make sure you don't use an ebay/amazon timing belt kit. Rock auto Aisin is the best, don't forget coupon!

Decided not to do the valve stem seals - 2 machine shops said don't worry about it UNLESS the car was smoking - apparently doing the valve seats is recommended to do at the same time, which I won't be doing.
