Should I buy a used 2004 TL or keep my 2004 TSX?
I really need your help! I own a 2004 TSX (bought new) which has 16,500 miles, Black, Ebony, 6-speed, Navi and my dealer friend (80 miles away) wants me to trade it in on a used 2004 TL with 33,500 miles, Anthrocite, Ebony, 6-speed, Navi.
I have read so many negative threads and bad problems with the 2004 TL's that I do not know what to do. Should I keep my TSX (with no problems at all, yet anyway) or go ahead and try to trade for the TL? I do not want to make the wrong decision.
Please advise me as I really need your input! Your responses back to me will weigh in heavily as the deciding factors to keep or to buy. I am supposed to go to the dealer at 11:00 on Saturday morning. Please try to reply as soon as you have time.
Many thanks for your help!

Holy crap, 33,500 miles in one year?? Am I the only one who finds that a little high?
Personally, I haven't had any problems with my TL thus far, but I just got it a few weeks ago, and so I don't have anywhere near that many miles on it yet.
You should at least go test drive it. I think most people around here will agree that you won't be disappointed if you went with a TL, but I'm not real sure about that specific one (since it has so many miles in such a short time). And I would imagine it was an early production run, so it may be a little more prone to the common problems.
Also, check via Carfax whether or not it was used as a rental vehicle. Most of the used vehicles I've seen which had a high numbers of miles in a short period of time were used as rentals.

duuuuuude....if i'm not mistake, and anyone, correct me if i'm wrong, but you can get a brand new TL for like 31
now you're lookin at a 6 speed with navi.....probably closer to 33, but he's only taking off 3 grand for a used car with 34,000 miles on it??? whooaaaaa nelly
at that difference, i'd say no way
if the TL is in great shape, clean carfax report and NOT a rental car....i think he should get a little closer to 3/4 grand difference....just my opinion

As far as the low VIN #, like I said earlier, it may be more prone to problems. BUT, it could also mean the previous owner has already ran into most of the common problems and gotten them fixed.

DO it if it is a straight trade (High milage TL) otherwise just buy a new one!!!!! But you won't regret having the TL over the TSX!!! Is almost like a Man(TL) compare to a boy(TSX)!! THe TL has so much more car than the TSX that is what I am trying to say in case you all don't understand what I meant.

IMO, the deal isn't good...
Ok, 30k for lower VIN 6MT Navi with 33.5k are too high. And, you may not like that car. Test-drive it and another brand new 6MT TL, please.
I don't think this is the good deal. Although the Audio system of TL is better, you may lose some fun-driving experience of TSX. What's the most important factor for your driving spirit?
Not sure if 23k for your TSX is good, either.
History check would be necessary.

Would you think that the dealer should consider me making him an offer of say...$3,000 difference?

You should PASS because of these reasons in order of precedence:
1) Your gut tells you it's a bad idea, based on the tone of your post
2) Your dealer friend is giving you a bad deal. With 33K miles on that car, I'd grade it as a 2 year old car. I'd say -15% then -10% for the first two years of depreciation which is like 26,775.
3) You called him a dealer friend rather than a friend who is a dealer.

Three Wheelin'
I piss on that deal! its a baaad decision to switch. Your tsx is still a nice ride, and i believe it has more wattage in the deck than the TL so the sound system "bumps" more. Plus thats an early stage 04 TL so its prone to all sorts of small problems its just a wise move to not get close to it, not even a test drive where it can entice you to make the purchase. and the miles.. wtf?? did the previous owner drive back and forth each coasts 11 times?
If you move up to the TL you must realize its a "sports luxury" ride, my friend owns a 6mt tsx so i know what its all about. even just riding in the passenger seat of both vehicles i can tell there is a big difference.

Your "STEALER FRIEND" is F@#king you big time. Like the below post that car is woth 26,500 tops. You have to figure 12k miles is average for 1 year. The car is 1 year old + the 05's coming out and 30k miles on it hammer the resale of that car. I just went to www.kbb.com wich is kelly blue book. I looked up the TL This is funny. If you put in the info for the car with 12k miles in excellent shape retail is 31k if you put it in for the car your "FRIEND" is selling it is 26,5 all because of the mileage.
STAY AWAY
1.33,000 miles
2.Its only worth 26,5 If you buy that car for 30k and you total it the inusrance is only going to cover 26k of it
3.You have a nice new tsx

Pass unless you can get that TL for around $25-26K. Even then I'd be wary. If it is a low VIN, there could be some minor issues or major (i.e. tranny recall) that have not been dealt with yet.

yea bro....UNLESS you can get about a 2/3 grand difference straight trade on the 2 cars, don't even CONSIDER it
and even then, i would have that TL checked out in detail, carfax report, etc.
drive the TL, if you love it.....then consider this situation and cover all details

Lets put things in perspective, You you have read so many threads abut thiis car being trouble. This is a small group of people complaining or sharing their concerns. Acura has sold over 70,000 Tl's this year. I bet that less than 3000 people have complained on this site. I could be wrong I don't know the sites numbers. I have an 04 tl vin xx2836. I have had several issues with my car and they have all been resolved and i have a terrible service department. A friend of mine just bought one and has not had any issues Vin 70XXX. It just depends. I don't think I wold buy one used with 33000 miles though.
Good luck

I agree with all the other people on here your car is still like new all tho it may be a bit under powered I would keep it and shoot for a 05 at the end of next year maybe!

Keep your TSX.
You bought it brand new, you know the car and you should enjoy it.
TL's are great cars, but this TL has way more miles than your TSX and is unproven compared to your TSX. Why take the risk?

keep the tsx
I'd keep the tsx and add a mod to it... That always changes how you feel about the car. My 2G CL S that I had I added bigger wheels and headers.. Made a difference in the handling and power...

ps
I sold my 04 TSX, then bought a 05 TL. Both cars are nice. it is all a matter of what is worth to you. I was able to sell my TSX with 14k high ($24,500) and buy a new 05 TL low 30,700. can get as low as 30,400) so I am happy. I just wish the more luxurious TL with black interior had some wood trim (see my current thread where I am trying to find a way)
ps: used 04 TLs hold their price an may not be worth it even certified...dealers want 28 (ask 29-30) and at auction go for 26-28. probably not worth the decreased resale value and hassle when can get new, newer year model 05.

Pass On It
I would not purchase any 04 TL....
I have had nothing but problems with my early VIN TL, purchased Sept 03.
Acura still has no resolution for the locking clutch at 1800 rpm's.. Thus been living with wheel vibrations since day one... even on my third set of tires...

get the hell out of that deal pronto, just like everybody else said. I have clost to 37.2k miles on my car, and let me tell you this, in order to put that amount of miles on the car, lots and lots of beatings just happen to occur. Nobody buy my car, and nobody buy this used 04tl either
