Should I be afraid?

Hi, I am new here I have had two Legends, and and RL, but now I am looking to buy a TL, either 07 or 08, with Nav. Would love a Type S but can't afford.
Some of the cars I am looking at are located in the northeast, particularly MD, PA & NY.
I am concerned about road salt = rust. I don't really have experience coming form the south east so I was wondering if I could get some input from you guys. Hoping to be a regular here soon!
thanks Bryan

You'll be fine. All cars are made in mind with salty roads.

Hahaha! Yeah it has virtually no effect! I would totally avoid them. Why. Do you think people specifically shop cars in the Southwest? If your going to travel to get it you may as well go somewhere where the environment has been kind to the vehicle.

Make sure that whatever car you're looking at has been undercoated every year. Here in Canada one company we use is "Rust Check" and you know a car has been done because there's a little sticker with the year on it so you know it's covered. It creeps into all of the little hard to reach places to protect against salt damage.

A 2007 or 2008 hasnt really been around long enough for the road salt from a few years worth of winter to do much if anything. The car will absolutely just fine. My previous TL I purchased used from a guy in PHL, it was an 08 Type S with about 25,000 miles and the under carraige looked practically new.

My 06 has had plenty of salt exposure in the winters over time- no rust noted.

Having owned several Hondas including an S2000 which had rust starting (true shame this car has this problem), I can't express how discouraging it is when the car shows rust.

If you look at the rear wheel wells of this generation TL, the lip is creased. This can create a safe haven for moisture and salt. That is why anytime I wash my car, I will stick the garden hose in the wheel well to thoroughly flush out anything trapped, and you would be surprised of how much debris is concealed there. I'd advise anyone to do the same with their TL.

I appreciate the replies, actually I won't be traveling to get it, I am buying sight unseen thru my friend's dealer auction log in. there are pictures but those won't tell me anything about the undercarriage. Most of them even have a comprehensive condition report, however I've never seen anything noting undercarriage or rust. My dealer friend says that a PA car is ok, because they use chemicals instead of salt, but I dunno. So I thought I'd ask here! Kind of a mixed bag of responses. Yes, I'd love to get a Arizona car or lower Texas, but there are just not as many as there are in the east, esp. northeast.

OP, where are you at? If you're in the Northeast, then I'd suggest getting winter rims/tires.

I believe my 06 has spent it's whole life in PA. Underneath the car is spotless. I do have stupid other rusty things like behind the license plate, the welded in bolts are rusty. I have one small spot on my hood by the grill too, probably caused by a rock chip though. Don't worry about it.

MarcoNorth Polo, I am in Alabama. Just looking nationwide, and there are a lot to choose from in the northeast for some reason.

^I have seen a ton of old civics and integras just compleatly eaten alive from the salt and dirt here in the notheast. It all gets trapped in those plastic sideskirts they had and up in the wheel wells. Anyways, like JTS said, the the 3g espically the 07/08s haven't been around long enough to be affected much by the winter climates.
