Shift knob replacement - getting boot to stay up, express style

I just replaced my shift knob with a Voodoo Titanium knob and love it. The threads I read on here all seemed to recommend removing the center console to install zip ties under the shift boot collar to get it to stay up. That sounded like too much work to me so I improvised. I pushed the boot collar down as far as it would go and then wrapped electricians tape around the shift lever at the height I wanted the collar until it was thick enough that I could just barely squeeze/wiggle the collar past it. It took a few tries to get the height perfect but I'm sure it took a lot less time than tearing apart the center console! I'll see how well it holds up once summer gets here and the heat works on the tape. Maybe I'll have to tear the console apart anyways but I figured this was worth a try.

That does sound like a easier technique. Thanks for sharing.

I was going to use electrical tape for this, but it tends to get all mushy and sticky in the warmer weather. Wound up using the fuzzy side of velcro with adhesive backing. Just make sure to clean the lever first with alcohol. Seems to be holding up well so far.

eh, i just let the dealer fix mine. my TL came with the boot falling down when i bought it new in 05. it was annoying. dealer fixed mine after 3 tries. on the 3rd try they just replaced the boot. no probs since. i don't know about the jerry rig alternative. i guess i'm just more comfy knowing that my shift boot is "normal." i guess whatever makes you happy. its always good to have options.

Well, there is no "jerry rig" here. This is an OEM part that will make this installation look like it was OEM....check out my pictures...

jrocka312: How does the adapter thing fit on? Screw on, friction fit, ???? I have a countersunk shift knob that screws down really far onto the shift lever, do you think this would still work?

That little black part on top of the collar...it just snaps in. Takes 3 seconds! The part was originally for the DC5 (RSX), so if you had purchased the ACURA billet accessory shift knob, you could add it with the same OEM look.

New boot wouldn't change anything. If you add an aftermarket shift knob, it doesn't have the ability to clip to the boot like the oem knob. That's what necessitates finding some sort of fix.

I was asking what keeps the collar with black thingy from sliding down? Is the black thing friction fit to the shift lever? Can it be adjusted to different heights? Does it attach to the shift knob in any way? Thanks!

Looks like that piece can't slide any further down the shaft than where it is in the picture... at the bottom of the threads. I'm assuming the shift lever bulges out and gets thicker below that point.

Hey guys,

I figured instead of making a new thread I'd ask here first. I bought my 04 TL used and I'm wondering what I'm missing here in order for my shift boot to be up on the shift knob. I read about clips but haven't actually seen them. I just ordered a short shift kit and bushings along with the Skunk2 shift knob. How would I get the shift boot to stay up on the knob? Thanks in advance.

Here are some pics of how it is right now. Please excuse the filth.

I have the skunk2 knob and I just jammed the boot up and over the nut. It's only come off twice in 4 years just be careful when cleaning the boot so you don't rip it off. It jams up there pretty good

Your links didn't open for me

I just ended up wrapping shipping tape around the very top of the shifter right under the threading which is where the boot metal sits. There's a small gap between the top of the boot and the shift knob nut but that's how I want it. Love that shift knob!

Just posed this question to my cousin, who has an NSX. He kindly pointed me to this thread in NSX Prime. Just asking the vendor if it will work on a 3G TL, but as the RSX part works and this looks essentially like it will do the same thing, I'm assuming that it's a go. Plus, it's black anodized a-loo-min-ee-um!

I'm sure it'll work. I can't see the shifter stalk being any different in diameter. This will make me very happy if it does fit!

Oh, snap! Please let us know what you find out. I shouldn't be such a and should just get on with ordering one. I'm having an issue getting a response from the Vendor, but my cousin swears by him for his previous orders with him.

If it works, I may just have opened up a huge market for the guy!

It should be here by Friday. I will let you all know if it fits or not.

If it doesn't fit I guess I could always buy an NSX so it doesn't go to waste

Here's the response I got from the vendor:

"We've only tried them in NSX's, it may clip in the boot, but the stalk diameter needs to be the exact same size, or it won't sit in the correct position."

After looking at the pics on the NSX site and then looking at mine with the knob off, I don't think it will sit low enough on the shift rod without boring out the hole a bit. It might work with a stock knob that only has to screw down to the bottom of the threads, but my Moddiction knob sits lower.

I tried it today on a new stock boot I had in the house and the tabs are too wide to clip into the slots in the ring on the boot. Its certainly not plug and play. If you want to take a drill and grinder to it (the tabs are about twice as wide as the area where they would clip in) you could probably make it work. It seemed so promising
