Sh*t Gas Mileage

Sh*t Gas Mileage
Ok, so I purchased a 06 TL in Oct. The first fill up I did with Super the car said "534 km to empty", I ended up getting about 430km, after that all the other fill up with Super I never got over 340km on a full tank, with regular gas I get about 270-280ish, thats with mostly city driving and easy on the gas and brake. My friend bought a TL one week before me and he gets about 450ish everytime on a full tank...I'm thinking about taking it in to the dealer to see if somethings wrong...or if someone can help me out here... that will be great -- thanks guys!

Sorry...dont understand all that km talk. lol Seriously.
At any rate...I have a blower and all the mods you see below and was screwing around with the trip computer the other day and noticed I get an avg 17 mpg - and its been running/tracking a LONG time...lol. This full race season in fact. So spring through fall of this year at a minimum about 50/50 track to street drive use...as I drive to the events.

1 mile = 1.6 km
means your getting between 7 - 8 mpg comparitively. hmm...sounds like something is wrong there definately. Is it tossing any check engine lights or anything?

You 340/13.5 = 25 km per gal. (about 16 mpg)
Your freind 450/13.5 = 33 km per gal. (about 21 mpg)
Both of you have similar cars (both AT or both MT for example) AND driving similar routes and styles?
16 mpg is low, but I've seen others report 16 - 18 mpg in city conditions. I think most would say something like 18 - 22 mpg or 20 - 24 mpg is "normal" in the city.

Ohh.. gotcha.. thanks for the clarification.. sounds about right.. He should realize that most of the time a "full tank" usually means 13-14 gallons.
I still haven't found out if the computer puts "until empty" due to driving conditions or it holds back the 2 gallon reserve.. or if there is a reserve top off.. ?? idk ?? all I know is I can only put 13 gallons in when it says it's empty and I believe we have 17 gallon capacity. right?

i've had my 04 5AT TL since may and have i keep track of my mileage after every fill up. i also have the hacked navi with the trip computer that shows slightly different results then the regular one.
i started out filling up at any gas station with their premium, nothing less than 91 octane and then my friend with a twin turbo skyline who only ever filled up with 94 sunoco said he switched to shells' v-power 91octane and has gotten better performance and mileage. so i decided to give it a shot, why not and i get air miles at shell. after about 4-5 fill ups i started to notice a difference, i used to get almost 450-500km/tank and now i'm getting 500-550km a tank. the manual says my tank is 64.7L and the gas light comes on when there is roughly 15L left, i've taken it as far as 70km past the 0km left on the display with no problems. i've still never put in more than 60L in one fill up!
i'm normaly around 10-11L/100km and have gotten as low as 8 with only highway usage.
my gas mileage has gone down right around the time i got winter tires so i thought it was just that but then i checked my air filter and it was dirtier than a bums pocket. my mechanic is supposed to check that every oil change, clearly he didn't. your tire pressure and air filter are 2 things that can easily change your gas mileage. my suggestion is check both of those and try v-power for 4-5 fill ups and see if it helps although if you only get 340km maybe something else is wrong and you should have it checked. 340 is disgusting gas mileage unless you're driving a f-350 dualie

Have you checked the Engine Air Filter? It should be replace every 30K Miles or 45,000 KM's. Use premium fuel and raise tire pressure to 35 PSI COLD. See if that helps. If not, buy a product called seafoam from you local auto parts store, and follow the instructions on how to use it here.

Once again common sense > reading >>>> Tl|GTX.

19 miles per US gallon in heavy Toronto-area traffic isn't unreasonable. When I was commuting here in the DC area I generally got somewhere between 18 and 21 miles per US gallon with a commute of about 13 miles each way. I generally get anywhere from 27 to 30 mpg per US gallon when I do mostly highway driving, with the number varying depending on traffic jams, amount of non-Interstate travel, etc.
It's reasonable to expect that the average "highway" figure for many Canadians might be lower than for many Americans because of the lack of expressways (i.e., Interstate-style roads) in much of the country. My fuel economy in Nova Scotia this summer was a bit lower, for example. But in Ontario the 400-series highways are better than a lot of Canadian expressways, so that wouldn't apply to the OP.
For the posters who don't follow the SI discussion, the US is the only country in the world to use miles per gallon. Most of the rest of the world uses litres per 100 kilometres driven (a more accurate measure of fuel consumption; our equivalent would be gallons per 62.5 miles driven, although you could use any distance as long as it were consistent), although some countries in Asia use litres per kilometre. The US miles per gallon standard measures distance travelled per amount of fuel used (higher number is thus better), whereas the European and Canadian litres per 100 kilometres standard measures the amount of fuel used per distance (lower number is thus better).

Anyway back on topic....16 mpg is pretty sad. Cold weather will have a big impact on your numbers so being your in Canada will cause this issue. I would put some Seafoam into a tank of gas and see if that changes it at all.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I took the car into the dealership this morning, it was a hassle to get them to look at it because its out of the ordinary and they wanted me to pay $110 to run a diagnostic test, eventually I told them I'm not paying for that because the car has full warranty so they gave in. The mechanic came out 45 minutes later and told me it is out of the ordinary but the car has all the latest programs and nothing is wrong electrically or mechanically and its in good function. So, that was a waste of my time.
I put 3/4 tank Shell High Octane in the car last night, I drove to work and back (15km each way) and then this morning to the dealership, when I got to the dealership the car said 78km on the reader and the trip computer said 230km to empty, but I know I won't be getting 230, I'll end up getting something around 160-170.
And, as far as your questions to help me solve this, when I purchased the car it had a full maintenance service done, fluids flushed, brand new tires, rotors, brake pads, air filters, oil change etc. and sorry for not making it clear I get 12L/100km according to the trip computer. The car is driven mostly 30km/day city driving to work & back and parked in my garage (which is the one of the warmest rooms in my house).
Any other suggestions? I'm all ears

First of all .. clear all the history of past milage ... and don't worry about "Km to empty" concentrate on L/100Km.
Km to empty is based on current historic driving habits and if it cold and stop and go it will be down. And if you watch it close you can add to it if your going down hill or coasting ...
If after you clear it and then your getting something like 18L/100 KM then worry .. if its in the area of 9 to 12 for a short cold commute then its normal.

With Honda motors its quite a bit the other way around. With my TL and MDX, when new I got around 15 MPG no matter how nice I was with the car. Then after a few thousand miles were put on it, the MDX gets around 22 and the TL gets around 30MPG.

10 MPG on the highway??? How fast are you driving? Gear? In my 5AT I rev at 2.5K going 90 MPH and still manage to get around 25 MPG over a distance of 30 miles! 600 pounds can account for up-to a 5 MPG loss, but no where near 15. What tires do you have? Tread left? Air-filter replaced? Premium fuel?

Nope, I went to Sherway Acura, the guys there are cool and friendly...just frustrated that they couldn't find a problem or come up with a solution. I've also heard bad things about the service at North Toronto. What part of the city you from?

Ok so I cleared all the history yesterday. It started off at about 17L/100km, after I came back home the reader said 14L/100km, I'm going to drive the car today and see what happens, this is all city driving, didn't take it on the HWY since I cleared all the history.

starchyld - i've tried no other dealerships so far, i bought the tl in may from north toronto and the sales people were pretty cool and nice. the service department's customer service is completely amateur imo. i live just south of them at yonge + finch, how about yourself?

check the CAI for leaks. Also when you have time take off a rims and see the weight of the tire and rim. Also how's the alignment on the car? Also what gas station have you been filling up at? Grade of Gas?
