Service due soon A1

At 4700mi and <15% oil Life I get the Service due soon message. Called my local dealer and was quoted $119. WTF this is high for an oil change and tire rotation. They say they change the oil, rotate and balance tires and top off fluids and do a 24 point inspection. Is it worth it?
I think tire rotation and balancing is no more than $10 and then oil change $25.
Where do they get $119 from?
Should I go to another dealer or do my oil change and rotation elsewhere?

There are a number of threads regarding scheduled servicing and the cost will vary from dealer to dealer across the nation. You do have several options; DIY, find a shop or mechanic you trust, have the dealer just do the oil change (bring your own oil and filter) and find a tire store to rotate and balance your tires. As far as having the dealer do it, for some it's a convenience. My last servicing (A1) for example was less than $40 and included rotation and necessary inspections.

A1 service doesn't require a "24 point inspection" (although other services later on do require inspections of some things). Also, what fluids are they "topping off" exactly? The first time I took my car into the dealer for A1 service, they charged me $2.40 to "top off" the windshield fluid with what I'm sure was just water with blue food coloring. Now I tell them not to do it. If any other fluids need "topping off", tell them you want the type and amount of fluids itemized on the bill and you will pay for what they add, nothing more. Also for the amount of money they charge you for generic bulk oil at the stealership, you might as well go to a parts store and buy full synthetic and tell them to use your oil. My A1 service was less than $30 when I brought my own oil.

Why do so many people go to the dealer for basic service? Warranty, I understand. Complex problems, I understand.

But oil change and tire rotation? I don't get it.

It's not required that basic maint be done by a dealer. Any reputable shop will do. Just keep your receipts for proof of service. I've used a local BP for the past 8 years (5 different cars) and no problems.

And I assure you I get Oil Change (synthetic), Tire Rotation/Balance, fluid check/refills and "24 point inspection" for WAY less than $119. More like $59.

Agreed. If I don't get a better deal I'll do it elsewhere myself.
here is what I wrote to them:
At 4700mi and <15% oil Life I get the Service due soon message. I called your service department and was quoted $119. A oil change, rotate and balance tires and top off fluids and do a 24 point inspection for a first service at $119 seems outrageously high. A oil change is $21.99 and includes the 24 point inspection plus car wash and vacuum with your coupon.
Rotate and balance my tires can not possibly cost $97. What offer can you make for this first time service to a VIP service member?

i change my own oil and rotate my own tires and reset the MID myself. saves me some coin. plus i feel as though i know my car a bit more intimately i'm more of a do-it-yourself person. but if you must go to the shops, don't pay $119

Stupid question but when you rotate your tires are they also supposed to be balanced? Original poster was quoted a balance with the rotation and I always thought the only time you needed tires balanced was when they were put on a rim?

The manual only calls for a rotation. You don't need to balance them unless there's a vibration coming from the tires. Otherwise you're just wasting money balancing tires that are just fine.

i think i paid $45 for my last A1 at the dealership...$119 is ridiculous!

shop around locally, and check Honda dealerships too, sometimes they are cheaper than Acura dealers

if all else fails, do it yourself

I ended up buying my own oil Mobil 1 5W20 and Mobil 1 Filter, brought it to a Honda dealer they changed it for $13 and had them rotate my tires. Much cheaper and I know what oil I have.

Balancing the tires is not a waste of money if you live where the roads are filled with potholes and concrete bumps and the like, it will save the steering components~

A smooth base for the car to operate from makes a happy car and a happy wife

I made an appointment for next week to have my A1 service done...they're charging me $91 + 10% off coupon = $82.90....I agree with you guys that it is expensive for a simple service.

If I take it to a Honda dealer will they be able to reset the MID etc....also are there any other shops/chains in central NJ area that you guys would recommend taking it to instead of the Acura dealer ?

My local dealer charges $29.95 for oil change, which I'm happy with. You don't need the tires rotated and don't need fluids topped, They are ripping you off.
My tire shop rotates tires for free if I bought them there. To be honest, as long as you bought tires there in the past, they never check the last time you bought from them, so it's always free. It takes no more then 5 minutes. They actually have me sit in the car as they change them. Then off I go.

GUMP I agree with you on the pricing etc.

I called up a dealer that's 30mins away and they said $30 for oil change, fluids etc. and $20 for the rotation etc...so to save $30-$40 I'm thinkin about just going the extra 15min drive rather then pay almost double just to save 10-15mins of driving
