Security Relock Timer

Just took delivery on my new TL on Friday. This is such an awesome car. So I just learned the hard way about this 'Security Relock Feature'....is this a feature that is common on all new cars? Just curious...

What hard lesson did you learn? The 2gen TL (circa 1999) had a relock feature: if you unlocked with the remote but did not open the doors within some time period it would relock the car. I don't see a downside to this.

downside is if you go to the gas station or something and get out of your car and leave the keys on the seat, then fillup and come back and your keys are locked in the car!

Went to the grocery store, approaching the car I unlocked via the fob (I always have done this just in case ), opened the trunk put groceries inside, accidentally left my keys on the floor, closed the trunk. Immediately realized I left the keys in there, but then thought 'glad I unlocked the doors first'...then pulled on the latch. What a great feeling that is to know you just locked your keys in the car!!

Anyway, no big deal...I had just never heard of that feature. I'm sure it has its upside...

If you left your keys in the car, you'd unlock before getting out and will not lock the car. Will you? With Honda and Acuras it's difficult to lock you keys inside. Even you lock and close the door, drivers side unlocks itself I think. I remember doing this several times in my 95 Integra and never could locked myself out.

Sounds like he didn't unlock the doors, but instead he used the remote to open the trunk only and then left the keys in the trunk after putting the groceries in. So theoretically you can lock your keys in the TRUNK, but almost impossible to lock the keys in the car. Only way was if the doors were locked and either the windows or sunroof were partially opened and you were dumb enough to slip the keys into the window/sunroof. Now you have locked yourself out of the car. I'm glad discoboy posted cause this is something my wife would probably do.

Some/most of the old aftermarket alarms had a feature called "passive arming". I'm sure you all know what that is so I'm not going to explain it, but I don't think it ever locked the doors. I hated that feature and always switched it off.

He did unlock the doors with his fob. He just did not open them. He opened the trunk and accidentally left his keys laying on the floor then closed the trunk. The doors then re-locked and, presto, no keys.
Sounds like Acura might need to look at adding the trunk to the re-lock system. In other words, if any of the doors, including the trunk is opened after they are unlocked using the fob, they would not re-lock. I wouldn't think that would be a difficult thing to do.

This is not standard on most cars. The idea is to secure your car from thieves if you unlock it, but walk away to do something else without opening the doors. Once a door is opened, the car will not relock. I believe you are permitted to set the delay on relocking for longer or shorter periods (30 seconds, 1 minute, etc.). If this problem happens more than once, get a key (w/o chip) cut to carry in your wallet which will let you open the door to get at the remote and real key inside the car.

Welcome; hope you spend more time in the car than outside it.

I've owned two vehicles that would lock the doors automatically for ya after you got out. One was based off of a timer, the other sensed the key fob. The one with the timer would gladly lock your keys in the car for ya if they weren't in the ignition..... The other vehicle, given the key fob had a "motion device" built in would due the same yet all you had to do was rock the vehicle and the doors would unlock.

I got so darn use to this feature (back to back vehicles) that after I sold the second I would always neglect to lock my car...... I myself would really enjoy seeing that option again in factory alarms etc.. The system with the motion detection in the fob was great. You could have the keys in your pocket and as you walked away from the vehicle it would lock and as you returned and approached the car it would unlock.

Like others have described, the only way the TL will lock itself is if you and your keys are outside of the vehicle - its already been locked, then you unlock yet never open the doors..... Basically, pretty hard to lock your keys in with exception to the trunk..

Nah...won't happen more than once.... But thanks, that's a great tip...I didn't know you could get a key without a chip (actually, I figured you could make a key, but I didn't know it would actually let you in.) So much to learn about this car (I love it!!)

Or at least give me the option of turning the feature off, or even just setting the reset time to 10 mins or something...Actually, if the salesman had even mentioned it in the feature rundown as they were getting ready to send me on my way, that probably kept me from making the mistake.

And BTW, I'm not trying to complain about this, just thought I'd mention it in case it hadn't occurred to someone that they could lock their keys in this way....

Now, back to making DVD-As...

I've never been caught on that, but the TL is my fourth car to have it (two Volvos, now two Acuras). I've been lucky, but it does seem like it's something that you should be able to disable entirely if you choose. The more control I have over my car's features... the happier I am!

My TL has locked itself if I don't open the door within a certain amount of time (when using the FOB).

You can change the relock timer using the MID, can't you? You might even be able to turn it off altogether... maybe I'm confusing it with my dad's car.

I'll check the next time I get in my car. Or maybe someone else can check it out.

I think you can turn it off. I know there is a setting for it in the MID, I dont remember if it is just delay but I am pretty sure it is an on/off feature too.

It wouldnt, but it would get you unwanted results depending on how you set it up, IE when you opened the trunk the MID would indicate a door was opened that wasnt.

I agree it seems like they would have thought of this. There are so many other really cool things about this car they did think about, this one seems like a no-brainer.
