Second ECU update (?) + recall

Had the oil jet recall (bulletin 04-20) done today, but also an ECU update.

Was anyone aware of this (bulletin 04-16) ? It appears to remap 5th gear at the "vibration spot" (50-65MPH), but I was actually able to spin the wheels in second gear while on a highway on-ramp...

The first and second halves of your sentence don't seem to go together... Can you clarify? What does a 5th gear remap have to do with spinning into 2nd?

re: bulletins - those are the numbers (04-16 is the ECU upgrade [second for 2004 TL]) and 04-20 is the oil jet recall.

re: ECU remap - there appears to be less vibration in 5th (where the car used to run at a low RPM), AND second / third gears appear to have more power. not uncommon, just caught me by surprise as the front end lifted up.

lindros2...

are you talking about my "dream" update for 5th gear? I have 5th gear-1500 RPM-50-55 MPH vibration (resonnance of exhaust). Whatever it is, I'll like to know it a little more.

Anyway, I'll call tomorrow and make an appointment, it's good to know the #. Thanks.

After done, I'll scan a copy of TSB 04-16 when returned.

Points to you.

I wish there were an easy way to pull the ECU version ("firmware") from the flash memory of our cars and figure out what versions we had, and the update them to the latest one manually.

On that note, everything is becoming "hackable" these days. DVD players, Mp3 players, X-Boxes, PS2s... soon we can hack our microwaves to work at 5000 watts and cook a frozen pizza in 15 seconds instead of 3 minutes.

I'm assuming these ECU updates are like the computer BIOS updates, where they tell you "If you don't have any problems, don't update it." I'd like to know what else that dream update fixes. More power at the low end is always good.

Just call...

1. SVC manager seems to dislike I post 1st page of TSB provided by them, so he refused to give me any further copies in the future.

2. TSB 04-016 is apparently another new ECU update for "MIL" (check engine light). This update just comes out, in replacement of the previous instruction of fixing "MIL".

Is it recommended to take the car in for an ECU update if the check engine has not come on so far?

Or would they just update the ECU when I take it in for regular service

How'd they figure out you posted it? If you didn't post it someone else would have. I don't see how they can stop service bulletins that affect OUR cars that we spent good money on from getting out.

Well I just took my car in yesterday for an ECU update because of the blinking engine light when giving the car WOT. I wonder if I got the new or old version of the update. I will have to ask.

Is this ECU update for the 6MT or the 5AT? I have not heard about it. Where can I read about it (website, etc.)?

LORE: ECU updates can be done to fix things or for performance reasons (remapping ECU is common on VW/Audi products). If the car is in a dealer it never hurts to get an update.

RETS: MIL is part of the update, but I've definitely seen a difference in 5th gear RPM at speeds I've stayed away from in the past (50-65).

Regardless of tires (EL-42 or Pilot Sport A/S), the car struggled here in the past (with vibration and general confusion).

I'll double confirm this in my next visit. I definitely like to get rid of that bothersome spot at 5th gear if the side effect of this update could help.

Once again, thanks.

seamg, I would believe it's for 5AT only.

Now... I hope someone could provide that copy of TSB now...

The update you got isn't for everyone. Your TSB 04-016 is for a rear or front air fuel ratio sensor. The error code that came up on your car was something like P2195 or P20195. The error codes should be on your paper work. You should check and post them on here if you don’t mind.

The TSB for me was 03-033a which is the misfire and the error codes for that are P0301, 0305, 0300.

Hope this helps some of you.

Donte,

Thanks for your info. I don't have 04-016 update yet, and not sure if this is fitting update for my car, either. As I recalled my conversation in the phone with the dealer, they cannot tell if my car would be eligible for that update unless they check my car in next appointment. (But I truly like to get some "side effect" like that to help delay my upshift at 5th gear)

Glad to know you got more details to share with us.

In Dec., I did the same update as you've obtained...

I dropped my car off an hour ago for the transmission fix and the "zeroed-out" odometer fix http://www.acura-tl.com/forums/showt...ghlight=zeroed. I also asked for the ECU upgrade (04-016), but they won't do it unless the error codes came up as stated above. This is not a recall item, supposedly.

No, this isn't for recall... but if you could get TSB copy back, will be great...

I just mentioned that my car had the first ECU update and they agreed to flash it with the second (new) one. No error codes...

1. Its amazing that cars are this complex and "hackable"

2. Its incredible that we have access to this kind of information. Awesome!
