Well I couldn't find any production numbers for the 3G TL, however I did find sales figures for the 3G, and here we go

2004- 77,895
2005- 78,218
2006-71,348
2007-58,545
2008-46,766

Now if you compare these sales numbers with mass market auto brands and luxury brands you will see it is more comparable to that of luxury brands. Hope that helps you.

What do you mean I want to feel special? I am just stating facts, acuras aren't exactly the same as everyday commuter cars.

They are, in fact, the same as everyday commuter cars.

Are you serious? I see brand new or fairly recent BMWs, Mercedes, and Audis everyday on the road. Now tell me, does this make them like the average everyday car?

For a while there the TL and MDX were everywhere, seemed like some of the more common vehicles on the road. Not to mention all the Integra's and RSX's out there. Acuras are very common/everyday cars.

Well what do you say about BMW, Mercedes, and Audi? Because they seem very common nowadays as well.

Kind of hard to consider Acura's prestige on a worldwide basis if it only exists as a brand in North America... OP didn't mention worldwide as part of the survey question.

Like it or not...
Acura is the prestige brand of Honda

just like...
Lexus is the prestige brand of Toyota
Lincoln is the prestige brand of Ford
Chrysler is the prestige brand for Dodge
Cadillac & Buick or both Prestige brands of Chevrolet
GMC is a prestige brand of Chevrolet Trucks
I guess you could even argue that Genesis could be a prestige brand of Hyundai...
etc...

Then there are prestige brands within prestige brands...
AMG for Mercedes
M Division for BMW
etc...

Beyond that I guess you could start labeling them ultra prestige and exotics...

The manufacturers consider them a prestige brand and market them accordingly. That survey question was a way for Acura to see how well they are doing on the marketing of Acura as prestige brand.

I think you're trying too hard to cling to your point no matter how futile...

By your logic, a Dodge Ram 2500, an Acura TL, a Miata, Scion xB, Chevy Impala, Ford Fusion, Toyota Tundra, Nissan Cube, Audi A4, Toyota Camry, BMW X-Series, KIA Soul, Ford F150, Mercedes C300, Genesis Coupe, any MINI, Chevrolet HHR, Nissan Pathfinder, BMW 3-series, Ford Explorer, Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E350, Dodge Charger, Ford Crown Victoria, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Yukon, and a Toyota Yaris are all pretty much the same type of automobile. (They all have 4 wheels-get you from point A to Point B and any given person is very likely to see at least one of each everyday in almost every part of the US.)

You could break that list down into similar groups sure, and each of those groups would be very different from one another but each one of those cars are different than the others, even within the same groups.

I hate threads like this because there are so many different opinions. Threads like this dont really contribute to anything...

Why is it anyone's business to know what other ppl think of the brand? If you like the car, buy it. If a stranger down the road says "nice car", then good for you, he likes your car but it still doesnt make any difference.

I refer to my car as a Honda. The only person I know that ever said I had a luxury car drives a Civic. It has more features than average cars but not many luxury features and is lacking some things like auto headlights that have been on Chevy's since the 90's.

In the beginning, I would give all of the Japanese brands(Acura/Infiniti/Lexus) a 4. Lexus still maintains a 4. I would give Infiniti a 3.5. Acura gets a 3.

The headlights in my '05 will turn off automatically should I leave the switch in the on position, and as soon as I start it back up, the headlights will come back on since the switch is in the on position... seems automatic enough for me... (your '08 is probably more clever though just as my MINI is more clever being a newer model as well...)

there's nothing special about a tl. it's a rebadged honda accord. regular old commuter car. the op is wishing for some sort of plateau to put this car on to make him feel that it's above other cars. it's not.

just an every day sedan with a couple extra features that are no longer premium. end of story.

Dafuq??? Gear head philoso-professors over here. Nothing will ever match the prestige of my first baby. I wish I hadn't sold her for 1$ (true story). I swear I felt like a mufuqin baus in this whip and I would rate it a 10/5, especially because it had 2 15" subwoofers:

Felt way cooler in this car than in a popcorn ass 5 series or bubbly lookin' Olds. Jeremy Clarkson says BMW owners are cocks anyway, which is not prestigious.

Oh I just realized I didn't answer OP's question. If prestige has anything to do with why you drive what you drive, a bunch of people on forums are going to make fun of you. Prestige of Acura models? Yellow, because pigs can't eat a lake while trees are dancing with their shoes off on the moon since it's made of ink.

Not missing your point, just don't agree with it and I think it is flawed...

The OP was asking a question in regards to a survey question he was asked on the Acura website. He was not asking about pushing the 3GTL up onto a plateau but asking the rest of the crowd here where we thought Acura may CURRENTLY be as a manufacturer. With solid reasoning behind his own belief as to why Acura had slipped on the prestige scale.

If a TL is simply a rebadged Accord then why not simply own an Accord?

It is those extra features that do set it apart. I'll agree that the "special features" on my '05 TL are pretty standard on regular NEW commuters, but compared to an "05 Accord it is still a step above.

great. that's why we all have opinions. acura is boring these days. honda is boring these days. they have fallen behind the jap "luxury" competition. that's the brand. all things equal back in 08, acura was damn good.

look back and see how this conversation digressed into that of the 3rd gen tl chassis itself. i'm not living in the past 6+ years ago. the 3rd gen tl is just a nice daily driver at this point.

Who cares? I became an Accord fan back in the mid-90s and after having owned three of those, a TL was a natural step up -- a great car made better. Not to mention good looking (the 3G, that is), smooth, comfortable, and reliable. Where my driving around in an 08 TL ranks me socially, I could not care less -- the fact that it's a glorified Honda Accord is a huge plus, not a minus!!

I've been driving a 97 civic for the past 7 years and although the TL and civic aren't closely related, I feel the same way. I like the honda brand at this point in my life, and there ain't nothing wrong with some added comfort, and some sexy.

Which is pretty much the same thing the OP stated of his own opinion of where Acura currently stands in regards to brand prestige.

It is all relative... I went from a 1978 Triumph TR8 as my daily driver to a 2005 TL. So for me it is a huge jump and I am sitting in the lap of luxury. My wife's car is a 2012 MINI Countryman ALL4, optioned to the hilt. The MINI is cool but my 2005 Acura beats it hands down for a long road trip. 12 hours behind the wheel of the Acura is easy, the MINI is a little more tiring.

I won't say that the 3G TL is an ultimate luxury or performance car, I don't view Acura ownership through rose colored glasses, I know what it is and I enjoy it for what it is, a step above a similar vintage Honda Accord. I've just been a little surprised that on an Acura Enthusiasts site there are owners so willing to throw the cars represented by said enthusiast site under the proverbial bus and drive over them.

Here's some prestige for ya:

I present....The Citroen CX Prestige!

So I guess I'd rate the TL a 0 in the Prestige department. They don't look anything alike.

A 5 point scale is tough. Here's my scale

1=Chevy Aveo and other low-budget cars
2=Hyundai/Kia/Ford/Chevy/Dodge
2.25 Buick/VW/Nissan
2.5 = Toyota/Honda
2.75=Chrysler
3=Acura/Audi/Cadillac/Lincoln (upscale brands of mass manufacturers)
4=Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Jaguar, Range Rover (premium manufacturers)
4.5=Tesla,Porsche
5=Italian Exotics, Bently (limited production)

Thank You! Atleast I have can see what I mean . You are right, the 3rd gen TL may have been based on the accord platform, but it is by no means a rebadged Honda Accord, the Hondas in Japan didn't even use the 3G TL body for thei Hondas, but yet this guy persists in saying that an acura is the same as an average everyday commuter.
