A sad sight twice in 1 week

I passed 3 TL's coming in opposite direction 4 days apart on different roads and each had the clear coat burned thru on the roofs. Back in 98' I bought a new Accord V6 and washed it every week & waxed it every 3 months. In 2008 the clear coat burned on the hood, roof & trunk. Evidently all Honda's do that from what I'm told, Honda has crappy paint. I was shocked to see the TL's doing the same so I'm guessing since my 07' TLS is now 10 years old it will be doing it soon. I would have thought Acura would have had better quality paint but evidently Honda just wants their paint to hold up about 10 years and that's it.

I find delamination affects certain colors more... Such as San Moreno Red turns pink too, yuck!!!

Nighthawk Black Pearl is pretty suseptible to delamination... Carbon Bronze Pearl seems to be the best for longevity and my personal favorite...

It it all comes down to maintenance, climate, and, well, luck!!!

Keep positive thoughts in mind, enjoy your TypeS, I still see many 3rd gens in good shape...

Also, I've only seen 1 (one) 8 gen Accord with bad paint, it was PMM (gray), it was a few years ago, and a POS to be honest...

Trust me, it may not be perfect, but I know Honda paint has gotten better!!!

I've owned my 2004 TL for 10 years. When it was my daily, it was detailed every weekend. I had it paint corrected once about 4 years ago.It currently sits under a 5 layer car cover and still detailed every time I take her out. I also have seen a few TL's with clear coat failures. My daily is a 2006 ML350 with 120K. It is also detailed every weekend and the paint looks wet. Our 2011 Optima also gets detailed once a week and the paint is in great condition, but could use a stage 1 paint correction. Point being, I'm excessive with the cleaning, but I doubt any of my vehicles will have clear coat failure. Keep in mind, any vehicle repainted could have clear coat failure quicker. If it matters, I'm also from NJ.

The paint on my 08 NBP Type S is in decent shape, except the top of the wing, which is very heavily fading. I also see a couple small spots on the trunk by the rear window where the clear coat looks to be getting a bit hazy. So, I'm thinking about pulling the trunk and getting it repainted.

Not really clear coat related, but I've got lots of rock chips on the hood, and a rust spot behind each of the rear wheels. I touched up the rock chips, so hopefully they won't rust... gotta figure out how to neutralize and repair the rust spots.

On another note... my friend got a 2001 Audi TT, and the quality of that paint is amazing compared to ours. I helped him buff out some scratches and touch up some paint... the clear coat alone on that is at least twice as thick as our entire paint. The quality of everything else (except the leather seats... ours suck) pales in comparison though. :-P

Really just comes down to care. Mine's detailed once a week and the paint seems to be holding up well. There's no special treatment, just sits outside in the parking lot when I'm work, and garaged occasionally when home. I have an '05 Anthracite metallic.

I've seen a few 04-06 Tls (RED) in tough shape on the hood and roof. I believe that just comes down to not caring at all from the first sight of trouble.

MOST people think of the car as an appliance.
MOST people dont think of the Sun's damaging effects on appliances, especially if said appliance sits outside.

I have a 05 NBP and the clear coat is fine on my car.. is it in the best condition? no but there isnt a single spot where its peeling or showing any signs of the clear coat cracking away.. not sure about the previous owner but ive had the car for about 3 years now and i garage it every night but it used to sit under the hot SoCal sun for 6-7 hours straight while i was at work.. my new job has a parking structure now though

I got the car professionally detailed with a 2 stage buff and wax a year ago and i wash my car 1 once a week every week (most of the time)

just keep up with regular washes and wax the thing once in a while and you should be good

I also had a 2001 Honda Accord that ive had for almost 9 years and i did the same thing with it.. weekly washes and the car NEVER had clear coat issues

My TL has been sit under texas sun for 4-5 years now (as no garage) and no I didn't get a change to wax, I just wash the car regularly avg once every 3 weeks. Justonjack can verify the paint is still good condition.

I have an silver 04 with 162,500 miles and the paint is not fading at all. Honestly it has not been taken care of obsessively. I try to do 2 details a year (wash/clay/compound/sealant/wax whatevers needed) and 2 wash/wax. Sometimes tho it gets neglected. Otherwise it is just go thru the car wash quick. Also, the bumper got fucked up last year ao my caring has really fallen off and I picked up another car so detail duty gets split.

I had two cavaliers that had paint fade tho. My accord had nighthawk black, such an amazing color. Actually my friend still has it. Its an 00' and it is still good I believe. I babied the shit out of that paint. I didnt know what I was doing, but I washed it and waxed it every other week at least.
