S4 vs. 2004 TL

Auto trans, no mods, good tires, the Audi was the older S4 with 2.7 turbo. Geez, I thought they were faster. Highway race from about 50mph+. He never had a chance, and by 120 had him by several car lengths. I guess that's why the newer ones have V8s.

Wow.. I'm a little surprised, I used to own a b5 s4 6mt. It was surprisingly not that fast for a tt v6 in stock form, though the power band was huge. However I'd say it was maybe a little quicker or at least even with my stock 3g tl 6mt. A chipped s4 I think would kick the living daylights out of a TL though. That thing was a beast with the stage 1 chip.

Nice kill. Those cars do better from a dig then they do from a roll(especially the 6MT). AWD doesn't help their top end.

Doesn't surprise me at all. The auto s4 in that year was a low 15 second car in stock form.

Agree. With the chip, the tt S4 can do 1/4 mile in the low 13s.

Must be a big difference between the trannies. In factory form, the B5 6MT is a very low 14 second car.

Yeah, yeah.. if it was chipped... and if the TL had a SC... the point was that it was stock vs. stock and, given the similar power specs, etc... I walked away from the guy with ease. He had that look on his face like the 325 driver does when I do the same.

+1 i always thought they were deep into the 14's stock? i would imagine that the auto be only a few .00 slower if at all

From a dig the S4 MT is slower than a WRX, but eventually it will catch up, and the WRX traps at ~94-95mph. I'd imagine the S4 would trap at 96-97? But I guess the AT is slower that's why the OP managed to pull on it? Besides, I think turbo cars are slower than usual in hot, humid condition right?

whoops didnt read OP full post. that sounds about right considering it was from semi-high mph roll plus AWD/AT power train loss.

I think the B5 S4 is a little quicker than the WRX to 60. Most mags say 5.5 for the Audi and 5.7 for the Subaru. S4 traps 98-99. The S4 isn't the porky pig some A4's are either. I was surprised to find it weighs in the 3500's.

Yea, it's something like that, S4 is supposed to be faster than the WRX.

B5 S4 6mt is faster than a wrx 5mt in a straight line, mod for mod of course. I know, I've owned and modded both. Twisties is another story..

I didn't even know the S4 came in a A/T either way though, a stock S4 TT isn't very fast.

A 3G TL should be about even with the 6M/T S4 2.7T

S4's are a handful for TL's... even the type S... just by chipping... 2.7 biturbo or newer V8's rock....

I have a 03 TL-S and a 01 S4. Stock B5S4 is about 5.5 sec, 14 quarter.

Here is a link

So stock to stock they should be close.

I dunno...

All I can say it that I let the guy in front of me once... I came up so close behind him, I just passed him on the right without a problem and kept on gaining. I've had the same experience against the older A6 with the 2.7T. Of course, the A6 is heavier than the S4.

I'm guessing from a stand-still, the lighter S4 would beat the TL to 60 - it would have to, I have NEVER seen a 5.5 0-60 in my car! Then again, so would one of those Neon SRT4s. It's a lot more fun pulling away while on the run.

The S4 is 3704 according to Edmund's, making it heavier than any TL. Not sure where I saw the S4 was in the 3500 range. 3704 makes more sense with the AWD and Audi's inherently porky tendencies.

In terms of speed and acceleration here is the chart:

S4 > TL > IS350

Case closed.
