Rust of Barrel of Rotors of TL Type S

Guys I'm lovin my 07 TL Type S but hating the rust on the barrel of the rotors. My 05 with 50k miles has no such rust and only trace amounts on the actual rotors compared to my 07 Type S with only 10k miles on it. Is there anything I can have the dealer do, or do myself to remove it? I can supply pics if needed. thanks.

I'd just ignore it.

I'm going to paint mine (plus rear calipers and rotor edges) as soon as the weather warms up.

I've already got the Caliper Paint kits. Just need time and temps.

but wont the paint just come off with heat? If I ask the dealer to resurface the rotors wont that do the trick? I think the prior owner of my car lived near the beach which is what caused this. I don't have that problem since I rarely goto the beach in this car.

Resurfacing won't do anything for the barrels/hubs; thats just the braking disk itself.

Caliper paint should hold up on the non-swept parts - outside edges, calipers, barrels/hubs.

Of course, when I change rotors, the work is "wasted", but they look like crap and I'll be painting the calipers anyhow, so not a lot of extra work. The aftermarket rotors (when needed) come with those areas pre-painted.

Make 'em look something like these hubs (OE disks are not slotted of course):

meh, we'll see how it goes.

(edit - thats a Rotora Slotted disk from Josh's (Excelerate's) GB Thread, btw)

thanks Bearcat. How do you know if the aftermarket rotors are as good or better quality than the OEM ones?

Reading member opinions here mostly. Start with Rotora and Racing Brake. Check their websites as well as Excelerate and Mr HeelToe.

I've got Racing Brake Slotted with their ET series pads on my '02 TL-S and they are awesome so far (~4 months or so); they stop like crazy.

breacat, how much did they set you back? Also, can you put bigger than stock rotors on our car or is it not advisable?

the car has what it has for rotor size- all you can do is improve the rotors and pads.
gen2 can upgrade calipers easily- not gen3

Most aftermarket brand names will equal or better OE parts-

Painting the edges and center is easy, my RB fronts have their special coating, but occassionaly need the outer edge touched up before a ziner meet~

the rears are basic replacements- they needed brake caliper paint- good to 600 degrees- if your rotors got that hot- the brake fluid will already have boiled and you have much bigger problems than caliper paint looming in the windshield!

There is a diy on painting the calipers themself- the rotors are self explanatory- where there is shiny now- you dont apply paint!!!! thats where the brake pads are touching when in action- must remain clean there

Use sandpaper to remove the surface rust- clean it with brake cleaner then paint 3 coats of `caliper paint`- $10 kit package includes small brush too

I just mine today in red, it was like 40 out anxd i used a hairdryer to dry the paint and 01tl4tl is right on the three coats. It costs around 16$ and comes in black, red, blue and silver i believe from duplicolor. And its ceramic paint so it withstands temp of up to 500 degrees.

It might be different for the 3G -

This is 2G:

Racing Brake Slotted Front Rotors
StopTech Slotted Rear Rotors
Racing Brake ET500 Pads all around
RB Stainless Steel Brake Lines all around

Parts total incl shipping was ~$650. This is WAY less ($250) than dealer OE replacement with new pads/rotors (no SS lines) and the same as dealer OE pads with turned rotors (no SS lines).

relubricate what?

its surface rust- not harmful really- just ugly
If you use sandpaper to clean it off, then the special high heat paint can adhere and will prevent rust from even forming
The calipers look good blacked out too- do the bracket and all

Duplicolor kits are at parts stores 10-15 bucks and have everything you need- get the liquid paint can not the spray paint type , also pick up a pack of flux brushes
The paint hardens in the brush quickly, making them throwaways after each coat of paint
