The RR Journals: More comparos - moto oils
These are motorcycle oils, but one can extrapolate a fair amount from them, and they include some of the "latest" formulations of which there is yet little empiric information.

Some key takeaways:
1) Royal Purple did terrible - it had nearly 2.5x the wear of the top performers, and finished dead last, way below many "mere" minoils. I do not know what is up with these guys, but my previous opinions of them have not been remedied by their latest finish.
2) Amsoil's additive pack looks strong. If they can keep the QC up, and eliminate their tendency of late to thicken in Honda engines, then they are again very worthy of choice in synthetics, or semi-syns like the XL-7500 series.

I have long held that RP is a second cousin to "snake oil", but I do give them credit for great marketing of a below average product. Caveat emptor!

Sportrider Magazine (Oct 2004?) compared about ten 10W-40 oils using several SAE tests. Mobil 1 motorcycle specific oils and and car oils were right at the top in those tests, along with Amsoil. Royal Purple did not fare well in those tests either. Unfortunately, they did not test 5W-40 Shell Rotella-T Synthetic, a favorite of many cyclists and only $12.50 gallon at Walmart.
I have used only Mobil 1 motorcycle synthetic in my bike since break-in. There was a huge difference in shift quality and I had to turn down the idle speed due to friction decrease.
