Royal Purple Tranny Fluid

Has anyone used it on their tranny? What were the results?

Is there a filter that needs to be cleaned or special procedure when changing tranny fluid? I can't find anything in the owner's manual.

Thanks.

changing out the oil filter located near the passenger side front wheel. I think it should be changed at EVERY oil change...

personally, never tried royal purple so can't really say much.

he was talking about the tranny fluid not oil change

I would not use it if you are still under warranty, believe there website mentions that, but I may be wrong, I think I remember reading it is a suitable replacement for the honda branded fluid

for oil changes... I've been using royal purple 5w30 for around 2k miles... no complaints... (it is really purple goes back to regular color after you drive)

I've been using Royal Purple oil but I was wondering about tranny fluid. What's so special about Honda's fluid?

Hey, I ran into some Royal Purple Tranny fluid and RP Engine oil. I read about people using RP fluid, hows the Oil?? I've been looking for the Castrol red label, and RP filter cause a lot of people mentioned on this site. I don't know about oil though, is it is popular as the filter people've been using? Oh, the Murrays near me doesn't have the filter but the oil.

There is no filter for the 6MT transmission. I don't even believe there is a magnet to collect loose ferrous metals (the 5AT drain plugs have a magnet built into the bolt.).

I had RP in my tranny from 30k to 61k with no issues. I had no issues with it, but decided to switch to the GM stuff.

I went to a local lube shop that is a distributor of royal purple. The manager called Royal Purple directly and was told as long as my tranny accepted ATF-Z1 fluid then it could be used.

I am closer to using it but I am going to check my manual first. It's $189 for a complete flush.

You can do a better job at home for way less, and stay with hondas special fluid which contains secret stuff just for hondas
Flush is a nasty word round these parts-- if they want to suction out the old fluid- its impossible on the TL do do that.
All you can do is keep draining 3 qts (all the trans will give up at time) of the 7.3 total capacity, and refil- drive 5 minutes running it thru all the gears then drain and refill-drive drain and refill
so if you ran 9-12 fresh qts thru it- you could be mostly sure its all RP then
this is for auto trans discussion

Right the manual says to do it 3 times. I will request that and will start using Royal Purple.

Given the the potential for tranmission problems in these car I would only put Honda fluid in it. The Z-1 Is cheaper and is what Honda recommends. You don't want to give them ANY reason to not warranty your tranny. There was a person in this forum that was able to get Acura to help with the cost of a new tranny even after the extended warratny ran out.

The risk doesn't out weigh the bennifits IMOP.

The concept of a multi-vehicle or an universal ATF is impossible considering the different wear protection requirements for different fluid specifications. The frictional properties are also different.

This SAE paper explains it:

Right but that paper is authored by GM people selling a GM product.

I guess you could compare the results of Royal Purple or other products to the OEM product and see how then stand up. My guess is that some racing developed fluids might be better.

The paper tests approved oil fills from nearly every automaker.

SAE papers are not just the opinion of the author, but have industry input and acceptance. The papers are peer-reviewed and reviewed anonymously prior to publication. In fact, both the reviewers and authors of the paper are kept "blind" so that there is absolutely no commercial bias.

I have a case of amsoil ATF that I was itching to try, but based off research, popular opinion, and general belief, I'm sticking with Honda stuff.

I will say that Honda's fluid has some very odd frictional properties (and doesn't have a very good base fluid to begin with), and I'd be tempted to try a multi-vehicle product. However, there must be a reason why the frictional properties are so strange.
